Cicada wings can kill some bacteria through contact with their nanoscale surface structure—not by releasing an antibiotic-like chemical. The wings’ surface is reported to be made primarily of chitin, while ordered nanopillars on that surface are implicated in physically damaging bacterial cells. The effect depends on the cicada and bacteria tested; it is not universal.
What does “chemistry” have to do with cicada wings?
There are two separate questions: what the wing is made of, and how it affects bacteria. A recent study describes the wing surface material as primarily chitin. But chemical characterization and antibacterial tests support a physical explanation for the reported bacterial killing: the surface’s nanoscale architecture, rather than a demonstrated antimicrobial chemical coating, is implicated in the effect. The 2026 study examines this distinction.
That makes “chemistry” a potentially misleading shorthand. The evidence does not show that cicada wings secrete an antibiotic-like substance. Instead, researchers focus on ordered nanopillars and related tiny protrusions that can interact mechanically with bacterial cells.

Researchers have examined cicada wing surfaces using techniques including atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Proposed explanations for the antibacterial effect include bacterial cells adhering to the sides of nanopillars and then deforming or stretching, which may rupture the cell envelope. Some accounts also propose that pillar tips penetrate cells or that contact creates shear damage.

- EFFORTLESS CLEANING -- Lifeproof Home Ceramic Coating prevents stains, smudges, fingerprints, water-spotting, soap-scum build-up, mineral build-up & more. When surfaces do get dirty, wipe away with ease! Protects surfaces for up to 6-12 months.
- SUPER-SLICK, ANTI-STICK, & ULTRA HYDROPHOBIC -- Lifeproof Home gives surfaces that super-slick, clean glass feeling, repelling liquids, stains, and other unwanted elements. DO NOT USE ON FLOORS due to super slick properties.
- MULTI-SURFACE SAFE -- Lifeproof Home is invisible and safe to use on nearly any hard surface including granite counters, stainless steel, appliances, laminate, marble, glass, metal, tile, porcelain, stone, painted cabinets, coriander, and many other home, kitchen, & bath surfaces.
- NON-TOXIC COATING -- Rest easy knowing your surfaces are protected in a non-toxic coating. Lifeproof Home has passed MTT Cytotoxicity testing.
- EASY SPRAY APPLICATION -- Starting with a cleaned surface, simply spray on desired surface, buff in with included microfiber towel, flip towel and remove any residue. Let cure (wait 1 hour for dry use, 4 hours for wet). Lifeproof Home coating can be removed anytime with Isopropyl alcohol. For best results, ensure surface is cleaned thoroughly before application.
These are proposed mechanisms, not a single settled explanation for every wing and bacterium. A review of nanopillar-surface research discusses multiple ways such structures may damage cells, while the 2026 study focuses on mechano-bactericidal activity against Gram-positive bacteria. The exact process can vary with the surface, bacterial species, and test conditions. The 2020 review of antibacterial nanopillar surfaces provides broader context.
Do cicada wings kill every kind of bacteria?
No. Results differ across cicada species, bacterial species, and experiments. In the 2012 online study of Psaltoda claripennis, the tested Gram-negative bacteria were consistently killed, while the tested Gram-positive bacteria remained resistant under the reported assay conditions. That finding describes the organisms and assay in that study; it does not establish that all Gram-negative bacteria are susceptible or all Gram-positive bacteria are resistant. The study record identifies the work and its selective bactericidal finding.

- CREATES AN INVISIBLE SHIELD ON TREATED SURFACES that inhibits the growth of microorganisms and helps prevent the growth and spread of bacteria for up to 3 months, antimicrobial fabric spray for long-lasting surface safety.
- KEEPS INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SURFACES of almost any type and material mold, mildew, algae and fungi free for up to 3 months using anti mold spray protection and durable surface care.
- WATERPROOF, WEATHERPROOF AND WON’T wash or wear off with normal maintenance or cleaning, ensuring lasting performance even when used with mold and mildew spray applications.
- PROTECTS AGAINST AND INHIBITS the development of microbiologically induced corrosion, stains, fading and odors, providing reliable performance in areas like mold spray bathroom.
- COMPARE LABELS! Most antimicrobial products are ONLY effective on “Hard, NonPorous Surfaces” (i.e., floors & countertops), but SHIELD is antimicrobially effective on the things we touch most: “Soft Surfaces” (furniture, carpets, bedding, clothes, backpacks, etc.) and “Food Contact Surfaces” (anything used to prep, cook or consume food).
A separate study of three cicada species reported that each had 20–25% bacterial surface coverage, but two species had substantially higher dead-to-live ratios. Coverage measures how much of a surface bacteria occupy; it is not the same as the fraction killed. The study published online in 2015 and in a 2016 journal issue illustrates why the endpoint matters.

Individual studies report results tied to particular wings, bacteria, and methods. For example, Hasan and colleagues reported that 6.1 ± 1.5 × 106 Pseudomonas aeruginosa cells per square centimeter were inactivated after 30 minutes. This is a result for the organism, wing, and assay they tested, not a general performance figure for cicada wings. Their article was published online in 2012 and appeared in a 2013 journal issue. The PubMed record provides study details.
A 2024 study measured average nanopillar heights of 251 nm for A. cingulata and 241 nm for K. scutellaris, with mean center-to-center spacings of 164 nm and 175 nm, respectively. It also measured water contact angles of 165° and 147°. These are measurements from the specimens studied, with variation by sample and location; they are not universal dimensions or wettability rules for those species, much less for all cicadas. The authors note limited sampling and recommend harmonized antibacterial protocols. The 2024 study reports these measurements and qualifications.
When comparing findings, keep the measured endpoint in view. Attachment, surface coverage, viability, and inactivation are different outcomes. The species tested, bacterial species and Gram status, assay duration, and surface geometry also affect what a result can establish. Differences in procedures are one reason the 2024 study calls for more consistent protocols.

Are cicada wings a ready-made antibacterial material?
No conclusion about a ready-to-use medical device or consumer product follows from these laboratory studies. Researchers are exploring engineered surfaces inspired by natural nanotopography, including black silicon, titanium, titanium alloys, and polymers. That is a research direction, not proof that actual cicada wings—or any particular biomimetic product—are ready for routine use. The nanopillar-surface review discusses this broader field.
Nor do the studies establish that cicadas evolved their wing structures specifically to kill bacteria. The 2024 paper notes that observing rupture does not reveal whether bacterial killing is the structures’ biological function. And laboratory effects on bacteria do not demonstrate infection prevention in people.
