Chromecast with Google TV normally downloads and installs updates automatically. To check manually, use the television interface at Settings (or All settings) > System > About > System update; update status is not shown in the Google Home app. Google releases firmware in stages, so two otherwise identical devices can update on different days. Its published security policy promises at least five years of automatic critical-security updates from the model’s US Google Store sale date, but that security commitment is not a guaranteed schedule or cutoff for every operating-system, app, or feature update.
How automatic updates work
Google describes Chromecast with Google TV as an over-the-air device that usually downloads updates automatically. During initial setup, the streamer checks for available software and can install it before you begin watching. After setup, it continues checking for releases and downloads them when Google makes an applicable package available.
Automatic does not mean every unit receives a release simultaneously. Google uses staged production rollouts. Its production-firmware listing is updated after a version is available for all devices, so the listing is not a promise that every Chromecast received the build on the publication date. A rollout can therefore leave one household on an older build while another household has already installed the newer one.

When installation starts, the Chromecast cannot be used for casting. The television displays update status, and the device’s LED pulses while it receives an update. Leave the power connected and do not interrupt the process unless Google’s troubleshooting steps tell you to restart it.

How to check for an update on the TV
Google’s published route is on the Chromecast itself, not in a phone app. Menu wording can differ slightly by software version or region, but the destination is the same.
- Turn on the television input connected to Chromecast with Google TV.
- Open Settings. On some versions this is labeled All settings.
- Select System.
- Choose About.
- Select System update.
- Read the status shown on screen. If an update is offered, follow the prompt to download and install it; if the device reports that it is current, no manual action is required.
Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer update status does not appear in the Google Home app. Checking the app for a firmware button can therefore make a healthy device look as though it has no update mechanism.
What a staged rollout means for your device
A staged rollout is a controlled release rather than a single worldwide switch. Google makes a production build available progressively, then records it in the production-firmware notes once the release is available across the device population. Timing can vary with model, region, network availability, and Google’s rollout controls. The official material does not establish a fixed weekly or monthly cadence, so an apparent delay is not by itself evidence of a fault.

If a friend has a newer build, compare the model before drawing conclusions. Chromecast with Google TV (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV (HD) have separate hardware entries and can receive the same or different packages. A manual check can find a release that has reached your unit, but it cannot force a rollout that Google has not yet made available to that unit.
Reading Google’s firmware release notes
Release notes are a dated snapshot. On the page last updated June 23, 2026, Google listed production build UTTC.250917.004 for both Chromecast with Google TV (4K) and HD. The notes identify an Android security patch level updated to October 2025, along with other bug fixes and performance improvements.
That build number should not be treated as a permanent “latest version.” Google can replace the listing or publish a newer package after the page date. For a current comparison, open the live Google firmware release-notes page and compare the build shown there with the version displayed under your Chromecast’s Settings > System > About section. A difference can simply indicate that your unit is still in a staged rollout, not that the update failed.

How long each model is promised security updates
Google’s connected-home security policy says eligible devices receive automatic security updates for at least five years from the date Google starts selling them on the US Google Store. The policy defines these as updates for critical issues known to Google that can be fixed through a remote software update. The model table gives the following dates and status:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Model | US Google Store release date used by policy | Published five-year minimum date | Status shown in Google’s table |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chromecast with Google TV (4K) and Chromecast Voice Remote | September 30, 2020 | September 30, 2025 | Currently receiving critical security updates |
| Chromecast with Google TV (HD) and Chromecast Voice Remote | September 22, 2022 | September 22, 2027 | Currently receiving critical security updates |
The date in the third column is the end of Google’s stated minimum period, not proof that updates stop on that day. In particular, Google’s table marks the 4K model as currently receiving critical security updates even though its minimum period has passed. Google may continue issuing security fixes beyond a minimum, but the policy does not promise how long that continuation will last or how often fixes will arrive.
The policy is anchored to sales on the US Google Store. It does not establish a separate support timetable for every country, retailer, or gray-market import. If your unit was sold through another channel or in another region, treat the published dates as the policy’s US reference point rather than a region-specific guarantee.

Security updates are not the same as every software update
“Security updates” in Google’s table have a narrow meaning: critical vulnerabilities that Google knows about and can address remotely. They are one category of firmware maintenance. A release can also include bug fixes, performance work, compatibility changes, Android components, or user-facing features.
Google’s cited materials provide the five-year minimum for critical security updates, but they do not publish a separate guaranteed end date for all system software, operating-system revisions, applications, or features. Therefore:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- A device can remain eligible for critical security fixes without receiving every new feature introduced on newer Google TV hardware.
- A release-note entry that mentions bug fixes or performance improvements does not create a promise of a particular future cadence.
- The end of a minimum-security period should not be reported as the end of all updates.
This distinction matters when deciding whether an older 4K Chromecast is still usable. Its security-support minimum has passed, yet Google’s table still records critical-security support. Conversely, the table alone cannot tell you whether a future interface feature or major operating-system version will arrive.

What to do when an update appears stuck
Google says a setup update typically takes 10–12 minutes. A longer pause can result from connectivity or power problems. Work through the least destructive checks first.
1. Check power and network connections
- Confirm that the Chromecast’s power cable is firmly connected to the device and its power source. Avoid switching off the television or unplugging the adapter while the LED is pulsing for an update.
- Check that the television still shows the Chromecast input and an update-status screen. If the screen has gone blank, select the correct HDMI input and allow a few minutes for the status to return.
- Verify that the Wi-Fi network is working for another device. A weak or interrupted connection can prevent the download from completing.
2. Restart the update with a one-minute power disconnect
If the update remains far beyond the normal setup duration, Google’s next suggested action is a controlled power restart: unplug the Chromecast, wait one full minute, then plug it back in. Give it time to boot and resume the update before trying other interventions. This restart is different from repeatedly pulling the cable in quick succession, which can interrupt startup without giving the device time to clear its state.
3. Factory-reset only if the problem persists
When connectivity, power, and the one-minute restart do not resolve the issue, Google advises a factory reset followed by setup again. A reset erases installed apps, account sign-ins, preferences, and network details, so treat it as a recovery step rather than a routine update method.

Google recommends using a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network if one is available when setting the device up again. Keep the Chromecast powered throughout the setup update and wait for the on-screen status to finish before attempting to cast.
Why a manual check may show no update
- Your unit is outside the current rollout stage: staged releases reach devices at different times, and the public production listing is updated once the release is available to all devices.
- You are checking the wrong place: Google Home does not display Chromecast with Google TV update status; use the TV menu.
- The model differs: 4K and HD have separate firmware entries and support dates.
- The device is already current: a release-note page may show a build that has not yet been offered to your specific unit, while your on-device status accurately reports no available update.
- Connectivity is unreliable: the device may defer or fail a download until it can maintain a stable network and power connection.
A practical way to interpret your Chromecast’s status
- Identify whether the hardware is the 4K or HD model in Settings > System > About.
- Run the on-device System update check rather than relying on Google Home.
- If no update is offered, allow for the staged rollout; do not infer that support has ended solely because another unit has a newer build.
- When troubleshooting, first protect the update process by checking power and Wi-Fi, then use Google’s one-minute unplug/replug step.
- Reserve a factory reset and fresh setup for persistent failures, understanding that personal settings and accounts will be erased.
Using this sequence keeps three different questions separate: whether Google has released a build, whether that build has reached your particular device, and whether the device can install it successfully. Google’s security table answers a fourth question—the minimum period for critical security fixes—but it does not set a universal end date for every kind of Chromecast with Google TV software.
