The Royal Society of Chemistry’s Environmental Sustainability: Heads of Chemistry UK Handbook offers chemistry departments in the UK and Ireland a menu of practical options for reducing resource use and waste. Its examples cover laboratory operations, sharing and purchasing, and teaching. The sources describe plausible cost benefits, but report no measured savings, emissions reductions or payback periods; departments should assess each option against local facilities, budgets, safety requirements and decision-making authority.
What the handbook is—and who it is for
Produced with Heads of Chemistry UK (HCUK), the handbook draws on interviews with heads of chemistry departments across the UK and Ireland. The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) presents it as adaptable, department-level guidance rather than a universal checklist. Its focus is the scale between individual research groups and the whole university: departments can influence everyday practice, procurement and teaching, while some building decisions remain outside their control. RSC overview.
The handbook’s framing reflects the constraints chemistry departments may face, including tight budgets, ageing infrastructure and competing priorities. Its value is in bringing practical options together, not promising that every measure suits every building.

The measures reported by the RSC and Chemistry World span laboratory practice, shared resources, waste and teaching. They are examples to evaluate locally, not a source-ranked list or quantified set of recommendations.

Laboratory operation and resource use
- Fume hoods: Review how hoods are used and whether practices can reduce unnecessary energy consumption. Any changes must preserve safe operation and follow local requirements.
- Water and energy: Look for ways to reduce consumption in laboratory work and department operations. The sources identify this as a potential cost benefit but provide no figures for expected savings.
- Equipment and operating hours: The report mentions more efficient laboratory equipment and changing building opening hours as possible approaches. Their suitability depends on local equipment, building systems and how the space is used.
- Helium recovery: Consider whether helium used in analytical equipment can be recovered. The report identifies this as an example; it does not specify equipment, implementation details or savings.
Sharing, purchasing and waste
- Share chemicals and equipment: Coordination among groups or departments may reduce duplicated purchasing and help manage chemicals better. Local storage, access, ownership and safety procedures still need to work.
- Manage materials and waste: The reported examples include washing and reusing lab coats and recycling gloves, solvents and liquid helium. Departments must determine which practices are safe and appropriate for their materials and facilities.
Teaching and degree programmes
Departments can also embed sustainability principles in degree programmes and practical teaching. This extends the work beyond operational changes by incorporating sustainability into how students learn to conduct chemistry.
What savings are supported by the reports?
Cost savings are a plausible co-benefit, not a quantified outcome established by the sources. Chemistry World quotes Jason Love, HCUK chair-elect and head of chemistry at the University of Edinburgh, saying that using less water and energy offers “obvious cost savings.” Love also says that managing and sharing chemicals can reduce both waste and spending. Those comments explain the rationale; neither report gives measured savings, emissions reductions, payback periods or evidence that every intervention will save money. - Durable Rust-Resistant Design: the biohazard waste container is crafted from, durable HDPE stainless steel, ensuring robustness and reliability in waste disposal; With its rust and chemical-resistant properties, this biohazard trash can stands the test of time, You can dispose of syringes and other hazardous materials safely thanks to its seamless leakproof design
The RSC’s account quotes Love describing departments working under significant financial constraints and emphasising being realistic about what can change and how resources are used. That makes local evaluation essential: a potentially useful measure may not be affordable, safe or practicable in a particular department.

Who can implement a change?
Some actions may be within a department head’s remit but depend on collective participation. Others require estates teams or university-level approval. Chemistry World quotes Martin Farley, associate director of environmental sustainability at UKRI, noting that measures such as installing solar panels or changing light fixtures may be centrally managed. Farley also says that many actions within a head of department’s remit require collective effort.

Before proceeding, identify the decision-maker for the relevant space, equipment or policy. A department may be able to coordinate day-to-day practices, while building upgrades or changes to opening hours may require agreement and resources from elsewhere in the university.
How to assess an option for your department
The reports do not rank interventions or provide comparative performance data. A department can use the following questions to decide which examples merit local investigation:
Rank #4
- Userfriendly pour clean: the waste container with lid sports a straight cylindrical form and a large opening, facilitating smooth waste disposal and effortless interior washing of waste liquid containers, chemical waste tank, lab liquid disposal waste pail
- Quick dispensing cleaning: the round, wide opening of this lab equipment cleaning tank simplifies pouring waste and washing away residues, ideal for portable waste liquid pail applications, laboratory waste bucket, liquid waste tank

- Environmental case: Which resource use or waste stream would the change address?
- Cost implications: What would implementation require, and what costs might change? The available reports do not supply payback or savings estimates.
- Safety and compliance: Can the change be made without compromising laboratory safety or applicable procedures?
- Infrastructure and feasibility: Does the building or equipment support the change, particularly where infrastructure is ageing?
- Authority: Is the decision within the department’s control, or does it require estates or university-level approval?
- People and coordination: Which groups need to participate for a shared practice to work?
The RSC describes the handbook as a menu of practical options. Treating it that way allows departments to select measures that fit their resources and authority instead of assuming every example transfers directly to every laboratory.
