OpenAI says advertisers do not receive your ChatGPT conversations, chat history, memories, or personal details. They receive aggregate, non-identifying performance information, such as total ad views or clicks. But conversation context can still help determine which ad appears: OpenAI says an ad may be selected using the current chat, and, when ad personalization is on, selected signals from past chats, memory, and ad interactions.
That distinction matters: turning off ad personalization limits some signals used to select ads, but does not stop ads or prevent the current conversation from influencing them. The controls below apply to ads inside ChatGPT; OpenAI’s marketing on other websites is a separate matter.
Do ChatGPT advertisers see your conversations?
According to OpenAI’s Ads in ChatGPT FAQ, advertisers do not have access to your chats, chat history, memories, name, email address, precise location, IP address, or sensitive information such as health, mental-health, or political topics. OpenAI says it does not share conversations with advertisers or sell user data to them.
Advertisers receive aggregated, non-identifying performance reporting, such as total views or clicks. That is different from giving an advertiser a transcript or identifying which person viewed an ad. If you choose to message an advertiser directly through an ad, however, that advertiser can see the messages you send it.

These are OpenAI’s published statements about its in-product ad policy, not an independent technical audit of the system.
What information can affect which ad you see?
OpenAI says its system considers the current conversation’s context and intent, along with information about the ad itself: its landing page, title, copy, advertiser-provided context hints, and targeting choices. The advertiser-facing Ads in ChatGPT: The Basics explains that context hints describe conversations, topics, or keywords where an advertiser’s product might be relevant. They guide matching; they are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee an ad will appear in a particular conversation.
When ad personalization is enabled, OpenAI says selected signals from the broader ChatGPT experience may also inform ad selection, including past chats, memory, and how you interact with ads. OpenAI says these signals stay within ChatGPT and are not provided to advertisers as personal data or conversation content.

What changes when you turn off ad personalization?
Where the control is available, go to Settings > Ad Controls and turn off ad personalization. OpenAI says ads may still be selected using the context of the current chat thread. With personalization off, other chat threads, ad history, and topics are not used to inform ad selection.
So this setting changes which signals may be used; it does not make ChatGPT ad-free or prevent the current conversation from affecting ad relevance.
Which privacy controls are separate?
Clear ads data
OpenAI says you can clear the data used for ads in Ad Controls. Once cleared, that data is no longer used to show ads. Removal from OpenAI’s servers may take up to 30 days, so clearing it does not mean immediate deletion from servers.

Manage an individual ad
From an ad’s menu, OpenAI says you can see why it was shown, dismiss it, give feedback, or hide or report it. These actions are distinct from switching off ad personalization.

OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not show ads. Its consumer-data guidance also says they do not appear in chat history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while temporary. Temporary Chats may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. If personalization is enabled, a personalized Temporary Chat may still use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins.
Turn off model improvement
Settings > Data controls contains the “Improve the model for everyone” control. That setting concerns model improvement, not ad personalization. Turning it off does not itself delete saved chats; those can remain in your chat history. See OpenAI’s Data controls in ChatGPT guidance.

How do ChatGPT ads differ from OpenAI marketing on other websites?
Ads shown inside ChatGPT are not the same as OpenAI promoting its own products on third-party websites. For that separate marketing activity, OpenAI says it may share limited identifiers—which may be linked to browser or device identifiers, IP addresses, or hashed contact information—and basic commercial or browsing information, such as visits to signup or product pages, with selected partners. OpenAI says it does not share ChatGPT conversations or uploaded files with those partners for this purpose.
Signed-in users can find the separate control at Settings > Data Controls > Marketing Privacy. OpenAI describes this as an opt-out for information sharing used to promote OpenAI on external properties; it is not the in-ChatGPT ad-personalization setting. Who sees ads, and where are they available?
OpenAI says its ad test began in the United States on February 9, 2026, with a gradual rollout to eligible Free and Go users in select regions. Its FAQ says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads, and accounts identified as belonging to people under 18 will not be shown ads. Temporary Chats also do not show ads.

Availability and controls can change as the rollout develops. OpenAI says Ad Controls are available to Free and Go users in regions where ads are available or coming soon; personalized ads were not initially available in the EEA or Switzerland.
