Yes—CERN is using heat from the Large Hadron Collider’s cooling system to supply a local district-heating network in Ferney-Voltaire, France. The system, which began delivering heat in mid-January 2026, captures warmth that would otherwise be released through cooling towers; it does not use particle beams to heat homes.
How does the LHC heat homes?
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a 27-kilometre accelerator with eight surface points. Near Ferney-Voltaire, at Point 8, equipment produces hot water as part of its cooling process. Ordinarily, that water would pass through cooling towers, releasing heat to the atmosphere before the cooled water returned to the equipment.
CERN’s new system routes the hot water through two heat exchangers rated at 5 megawatts (MW) each. The exchangers transfer thermal energy to the town’s district-heating network, which distributes hot water to buildings. The heat comes from the accelerator’s cooling infrastructure, not directly from particle collisions. CERN’s 28 January 2026 report describes the system and its operation.
Where does the heat go, and how much can it supply?
The connection serves a new residential and commercial area in Ferney-Voltaire, France, close to LHC Point 8. CERN says the network is expected to supply heat equivalent to several thousand homes. That is an approximate equivalence, not a count of homes individually connected or a guarantee that every home receives LHC heat year-round.

Ferney-Voltaire is currently using up to 5 MW from the system. CERN says output could theoretically double when both exchangers are used and the accelerators are fully operational. The two exchangers’ 5-MW ratings describe their equipment capacity; the reported current use and potential output depend on operating conditions and should not be read as continuous delivery at maximum capacity.
What happens during an LHC shutdown?
The system is designed to keep supplying heat during most of CERN’s multi-year Long Shutdown 3 (LS3). CERN expects the Point 8 installation to provide between 1 and 5 MW during the shutdown, apart from five months spread across that period. Some installations at Point 8 still need cooling even when the accelerator is not operating normally, leaving heat available for recovery.

By replacing traditional heat sources such as gas, the project is expected to avoid thousands of tonnes of CO2 emissions. CERN presents the Ferney-Voltaire connection as one part of broader energy-recovery work, rather than a stand-alone measure of the laboratory’s overall emissions or energy use.

Other CERN initiatives include heat recovery at the Prévessin Data Centre, inaugurated in 2024, with a system intended to warm most buildings on that site from winter 2026/2027. CERN also describes a future plan to recover heat from cooling towers at LHC Point 1 for buildings on the Meyrin site. CERN expects these combined recovery initiatives to save 25–30 GWh per year from 2027; that is a forecast for the combined initiatives, not the Ferney-Voltaire project alone.

Potentially, but a project’s usefulness depends on the match between the heat source and local heating demand. Relevant considerations include how hot and reliable the recovered heat is, how much capacity can be captured, the distance to a district-heating network, seasonal demand, and what supplies heat when the source is unavailable. The recovery system also needs to coexist with the accelerator’s primary research and cooling requirements.

Ferney-Voltaire has a nearby district-heating network and a Point 8 heat source. CERN’s report shows that this particular connection can provide a meaningful local supply, while its variable operating figures illustrate why output depends on accelerator and facility conditions.
