Catalyst recycling on tape is a specific laboratory method: a fluorous rhodium catalyst participates in a hot organic reaction, then separates onto PTFE (Teflon) tape as the mixture cools. The tape can be moved into another reaction cycle. The 2005 demonstration used the method for ketone hydrosilylation; it does not show that ordinary tape can recycle catalysts by itself or that the approach works for catalysts generally.
How does catalyst recycling on tape work?
The method relies on a change in how the catalyst behaves as the reaction mixture cools. During the heated reaction, the fluorous rhodium catalyst is soluble in the organic medium. After the reaction, cooling causes the catalyst’s resting state to separate from the liquid and collect on PTFE tape. The tape carrying the catalyst can then be transferred to a new reaction mixture.
In the study by Long V. Dinh and J. A. Gladysz, the model reaction was hydrosilylation of cyclohexanone with PhMe₂SiH in dibutyl ether. The tape was a support and transfer aid within that particular chemical system—not the active catalyst, and not a general-purpose catalyst-recovery device.

Reaction without tape
In the no-tape experiment, the researchers used 1 mol% catalyst and warmed the reaction mixture to 65 °C. They reported 98% yield after eight hours. They washed and recharged the recovered catalyst residue, then repeated the procedure three more times; each of those cycles also gave a reported 98% yield. These figures describe the authors’ specific experiment, not a general performance benchmark.

Reaction with tape
For the tape-assisted sequence, the authors used 0.15 mol% catalyst and commercial Teflon tape, with homogeneous reaction conditions at 55 °C. A representative reaction gave a reported 97% yield. On cooling, the catalyst resting state separated onto the tape for transfer into subsequent cycles.
Activity retention was excellent in cycles two and three, but fell substantially in cycle four. The authors attributed the later loss to catalyst deactivation, rather than an inherent failure of the tape recovery method. With other tested ketones—2-octanone, acetophenone, and benzophenone—they reported up to 20% activity loss by the third cycle. Results therefore depended on the substrate and reaction conditions.

Does the catalyst stay on the tape without losses?
No. The study measured material leaving the system: rhodium leaching was 0.57% in cycle one and 5.3% in cycle two; total fluorous ponytail leaching over the first three cycles was 11.4%. These measurements are specific to the reported procedure, but they show why “reusable” should not be read as “loss-free.” The 2017 follow-up record also discusses leaching and reports that fluorous/organic liquid-liquid biphasic conditions can retain activity better than the tape procedure. EPA HERO record for the 2017 follow-up.
Can tape also deliver a small catalyst dose?
The authors also explored precoating catalyst onto PTFE tape. In principle, this lets a user deliver a low catalyst loading by tape length instead of weighing a very small catalyst quantity or preparing a standard solution. The follow-up record describes precoating and catalyst release in later cycles. This is a dosing and handling approach within the studied chemistry, not evidence that any catalyst can be stored or dispensed this way.

As the paper’s corresponding author J. A. Gladysz put it, “This approach provides not only a convenient means of catalyst recovery, but also of catalyst delivery.” Dinh and Gladysz, 2005.
Is catalyst recycling the same as catalyst regeneration?
No. Recycling here means recovering a catalyst and using it in another reaction cycle. Regeneration means restoring the activity of a spent catalyst, often through treatment that removes surface coatings or absorbed species; whether that is possible depends on what caused the deactivation and how severe it is. What are the limits of the tape method?
- It is chemistry-specific. The evidence is a fluorous rhodium system demonstrated for ketone hydrosilylation, especially cyclohexanone in dibutyl ether.
- Reuse does not guarantee stable activity indefinitely. The reported tape sequence retained activity well through cycles two and three, then lost substantial activity in cycle four; other ketones also showed activity loss.
- Recovery can involve leaching. The authors measured both rhodium and fluorous ligand losses.
- It is laboratory evidence, not an industrial validation. The cited studies do not establish commercial-scale performance, broad compatibility with other catalysts, or lifecycle benefits.
The original experimental report is Dinh and Gladysz’s 2005 paper; the later record is EPA HERO’s summary of a 2017 follow-up.
