Casino cameras can provide images for facial-recognition checks, while vehicle plates may be collected and matched with information held by an operator. These are separate uses of surveillance data, and neither is universal: what a casino collects, how it uses the information, and how long it keeps it depend on the operator and local law.
How does facial recognition work in a casino?
A camera captures a face image. Facial-recognition software uses that image to produce or compare biometric information against a relevant record, such as an exclusion or barring list. If the system flags a possible match, it can notify staff, who may investigate or take action under the venue’s procedures and applicable rules.
Queensland’s regulation describes facial-recognition technology as enabling a person’s facial image to be recognized, identified and recorded, then compared with biometric information about excluded people. South Australia’s Consumer and Business Services regulator describes systems that compare entrant images with a barring database and notify a gambling provider about a suspected barred person. These descriptions explain the basic workflow, not one standard system used by every casino.

A possible match is an alert, not proof that someone is barred or has done anything wrong. The sources do not establish a universal accuracy rate, nor do they show that every camera feed at every casino is analyzed in real time.

Do casinos use facial recognition?
Some operators publicly describe using it, but practices vary. Crown says it uses cameras equipped with facial recognition throughout its premises and adjacent areas for safety, responsible-gaming operations, keeping excluded people out, and legal or regulatory compliance. That is Crown’s stated practice and purpose; it should not be treated as a description of all casinos.
Do casinos scan license plates?
At least one casino privacy policy says the operator may collect vehicle number-plate details when a person parks in a property car park and may match those details with personal information it holds. That documents plate collection and matching by that operator. It does not establish that the operator uses an automated license-plate reader, which databases it checks, or how long plate information is retained.

License-plate capture and facial recognition are different processes: one starts with a vehicle plate, the other with a face image. The available policies do not establish a universal casino practice for automated plate reading or cross-operator sharing.

What happens to face scans at a casino?
Handling depends on the operator and jurisdiction. Crown says most biometric information is deleted within a few seconds and that retained information is kept securely on its premises. That is Crown’s own description; it is not a general retention period for casinos.

Queensland’s 2025 regulation sets conditions for facial-recognition use in relevant licensed premises. For gaming premises, the system is tied to identifying excluded people to prevent them entering or remaining in breach of an exclusion order or direction. It requires deletion of biometric information that does not identify an excluded person and requires signage. The regulation also bars using held information to encourage gambling or linking it with a customer loyalty or rewards program.
What safeguards and limits apply?
Queensland
Queensland Government guidance says authorized facial-recognition use is limited to identifying people excluded from gaming premises or subject to liquor banning orders. It says marketing, customer profiling and gambling incentives are not permitted uses under the law. The guidance calls for prominent signage and recommends avoiding camera placement that inadvertently captures passers-by who are not entering the premises. These rules and recommendations are specific to Queensland.

South Australia
South Australia uses an evaluation and approval process for systems at gaming venues. The Consumer and Business Services regulator says a system must be able to identify or verify faces from digital images captured from fixed video sources, securely communicate with the regulator’s barring database, compare entrant images, notify the provider of a suspected barred person, and prevent unauthorized access, use or disclosure. This example shows that regulation can address system capabilities and data protections as well as the purpose of camera use.
Ohio: general casino surveillance controls
Ohio’s casino surveillance rule, effective March 29, 2025, includes controls for surveillance systems generally: protection against obstruction and tampering, redundant recording storage, synchronized date and time stamps, authenticated exports, alerts when a system fails, access controls, restricted erasure, controlled remote access and user-activity logs. These are surveillance-integrity requirements; they should not be mistaken for rules specifically governing facial recognition or license-plate readers.

Can a casino identify you from its cameras?
A camera image alone does not establish that a casino can identify a particular visitor. Where facial recognition is deployed, software may compare a captured face with relevant biometric records, including exclusion or barring information. A flagged result can lead staff to check further, but it is not conclusive evidence. Rules, databases and operator practices differ, and the available sources do not establish that every casino uses this technology.
