There is no proven home method, supplement, or “cleanse” that removes cadmium from blood. If you may have been exposed, contact a healthcare professional: treatment depends on the route, amount, timing, symptoms, and test results. Medical management focuses on treating serious effects and preventing further exposure—not trying to flush cadmium out yourself.
What to do if you may have been exposed
For a suspected recent or significant exposure, seek urgent medical advice or contact your local poison center. If the person has trouble breathing, severe symptoms, or is deteriorating, call emergency services. ATSDR states that there is no specific antidote for acute cadmium poisoning. Serious inhalation exposures may require supportive care, such as oxygen, fluid replacement, or mechanical ventilation; this is care provided by medical professionals, not a home treatment. Do not try to treat an exposure with activated charcoal, chelation products, or supplements. ATSDR says activated charcoal has not been proven effective for cadmium poisoning. It also reports that standard chelation approaches have generally not proved effective; the cited treatment guidance contraindicates dimercaprol (BAL) because it can increase kidney toxicity. Why blood tests do not show a simple “detox” target
Blood cadmium mainly indicates recent exposure
A blood cadmium result can help confirm recent exposure, but it does not reliably measure the total amount stored in the body or predict a person’s clinical outcome. A number on a lab report is not, by itself, a threshold for self-treatment. A clinician interprets it alongside exposure history, symptoms, and other findings. Urine testing may be more useful for chronic exposure
For assessing chronic exposure in appropriate circumstances, ATSDR identifies a 24-hour urine cadmium test normalized to creatinine as the best screening and diagnostic test. Kidney damage can affect urinary cadmium excretion and complicate interpretation, so the result needs clinical context. Testing measures exposure; it does not remove cadmium. Hair tests are not a reliable substitute
Hair cadmium is not considered a reliable predictor of toxicity or workplace exposure: studies have not established a quantitative relationship between hair levels and body burden, and samples may be contaminated. Occupational monitoring thresholds found in older ATSDR educational materials are workplace program triggers, not universal treatment cutoffs for individuals. Why there is no quick way to clear cadmium
The body eliminates absorbed cadmium slowly, primarily in urine, and cadmium can accumulate in tissues over time. An archived ATSDR educational page estimates biological half-lives of 6–38 years in the kidney and 4–19 years in the liver. These are broad estimates of tissue persistence, not a prediction for one person and not a timetable for a detox. They do not establish that a product or treatment can speed clearance. The most important step for chronic exposure is stopping the source
For ongoing or past chronic exposure, preventing additional exposure is the central management step. If you suspect a workplace source, contact occupational health or the appropriate workplace safety professional. If the possible source is in your home or community, ask a healthcare professional or local public-health authority about evaluating it. Finding and addressing the source helps prevent continued exposure; it does not instantly remove cadmium already absorbed. [ATSDR: Clinical Assessment and Treatment of Cadmium]
