Usually, researchers cannot determine the sex of a single fossil with confidence. A rare, direct reproductive clue can identify an individual; more often, scientists compare specimens to estimate whether a population had average differences between sexes. Those are different questions: a statistical pattern may suggest sexual dimorphism without revealing whether any particular fossil was male or female.
When can a fossil’s sex be identified directly?
Direct evidence is uncommon. For dinosaurs, eggs preserved inside an individual can support identifying it as female if they are in the lower body, where they would be associated with reproduction. Eggs in the stomach could instead be prey. The Natural History Museum describes correctly positioned eggs as the strongest available route to a definitive identification, while noting that such cases are very rare.
There is no definitive male-identification method for dinosaurs in the evidence reviewed by the museum. Medullary bone, a tissue associated in living birds with calcium mobilization for eggshell production, has been proposed as a clue to a female near egg-laying. But similar tissue may form under environmental stress, so it is not an unambiguous sex marker.
How do researchers infer sex differences from a group of fossils?
When no direct reproductive clue is available, the question shifts from “What sex was this individual?” to “Do specimens from this population show a repeated pattern that could reflect differences between sexes?” Researchers first need to consider whether specimens belong to the same species and comparable growth stages, then compare traits such as body size, skull ornamentation, or skeletal robustness.

A difference in a visible trait alone does not prove sexual dimorphism. Age-related growth, ordinary individual variation, different species, preservation, and small or incomplete samples can all create apparent differences or conceal real ones. Fossil samples are often too limited to resolve these alternatives cleanly.
Estimating the size of a difference
Rather than treating an analysis only as a significant/not-significant test, researchers can use effect-size statistics to estimate how large a difference may be and express uncertainty around that estimate. A Field Museum account of work by Evan Saitta and colleagues, circa 2020, reported that adult Maiasaura specimens in the analyzed sample may have differed in size by about 45% between sexes. The analysis did not determine which sex was larger. That estimate describes a specific sample and is not a general figure for dinosaurs—or a way to sex a particular Maiasaura fossil.

Methods for samples without known-sex individuals
Researchers may not have any specimens whose sex is known in advance. Sasaki and colleagues’ 2021 PNAS paper introduced a Bayesian posterior-density-peak method, or pdPeak, to estimate sexual dimorphism and within-sex variation together. The method aims to improve on approaches that divide specimens around a sample average and assume the larger half represents one sex and the smaller half the other. That assumption is more plausible when the two distributions overlap little; conventional approaches can overestimate weak dimorphism.
pdPeak can provide interval estimates, but it relies on distributional assumptions and should be considered alongside other methods. Like other population-level analyses, it estimates patterns in a group; it does not identify the sex of a named, unsexed fossil.

What statistical results can—and cannot—tell us
Statistical analysis can help quantify whether a sample is consistent with sex-based differences and how uncertain the estimated difference is. It cannot, by itself, tell researchers that a particular large specimen was male or a particular small specimen was female. That assignment would require additional evidence, and the group pattern may remain ambiguous if the sample is small, ages are mixed, or the specimens do not all belong to one species.
There is no universal accuracy percentage for sexing fossils. The strength of a conclusion depends on the type of evidence, the fossil group, the quality and comparability of the specimens, and the method’s assumptions.

Why archaeological human remains are a different case
In archaeological human remains, researchers can assess skeletal morphology and, when preservation allows, use molecular evidence. A 2020 Scientific Reports study compared osteological assessment with amelogenin-peptide proteomics and genomic DNA, evaluating multiple skeletal traits relative to the local population. An earlier study reported sex determinations for ancient human skeletons using a molecular genetic technique (study record).
