You can watch some NHL games free without a subscription if the game airs on a local broadcast channel such as ABC and you can receive that station over the air. There is no single official free stream for every game: most online viewing depends on the game, your country and local market, and whether you have access to the broadcaster or service carrying it.
Find the game’s official broadcast first
Start with the NHL’s How to Watch guide and schedule. Look up the game and note its broadcaster, then check the NHL’s broadcast-area information for local coverage. A national game, a game shown by your local team’s regional outlet, and an out-of-market game may have different viewing routes.
- Open the NHL’s How to Watch guide and find the game.
- Check the local broadcast-area information using your ZIP or postal code.
- Follow the listed broadcaster or service and check its access requirements and any blackout notice.
When can you watch an NHL game for free?
Over-the-air ABC in the United States
If a game is listed on ABC, you may be able to watch the local ABC broadcast with an antenna, without paying for a streaming subscription, provided the station is receivable at your address. ABC is an NHL broadcaster, but reception varies by location; check local station coverage before buying equipment. An antenna receives broadcast television—it does not unlock subscription-only games, out-of-market coverage, or every NHL broadcast. The NHL’s game listings identify ABC games.
ABC’s online stream may require a TV provider
Watching ABC over the internet is not automatically free. ABC says viewers may need to sign in with a participating TV provider to access live streams. That guidance is general ABC support information, not a guarantee about the access conditions for every NHL game. See ABC’s live-TV access guidance.

Promotions and free trials
Do not assume a service offers a free trial. The NHL’s viewing guide lists services but does not establish a current trial, its duration, or eligibility. Check the provider’s current terms before signing up; a promotion may be limited by region, account status, or date.
U.S. viewing routes are different for each game
The NHL’s U.S. guide lists ESPN, ESPN+, ABC, Hulu, TNT, Watch TNT/HBO Max, and regional services as destinations for different games. The platform listing tells you where a game is carried; it does not mean the stream is free. Check the game’s listing and the service’s sign-in or subscription requirements.

Local and out-of-market games
Local coverage is tied to a team’s broadcast area. Out-of-market packages are meant for games outside that area, but they do not include every game in every circumstance. The NHL says certain regional games carried by NHL Network outside local markets are not available on ESPN+. Check the NHL guide for the specific game and service rather than assuming an out-of-market package includes it.
What the 2026–27 ESPN announcement means
ESPN announced 100 exclusive NHL games across ESPN, ESPN+, ABC, Disney+, and Hulu for 2026–27, plus more than 1,050 additional out-of-market games through NHL Power Play. These are announced schedule and package figures, not free-stream counts or a promise that every game is available without payment. See ESPN’s 2026–27 schedule announcement.

Check your country before choosing a service
Canada
For Canadian viewers, the NHL guide lists Sportsnet, Prime Video, and TVA Sports for national games, with separate information for local and out-of-market coverage through teams, NHL Centre Ice, and Sportsnet+. U.S. services and rights do not necessarily apply in Canada. Confirm the individual game in the NHL guide.

Other countries
The NHL lists NHL.TV through DAZN for specified territories for 2026–27. Availability and restrictions are country-specific. The NHL’s NHL.TV information notes live blackouts for partner-network games in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Check the current territory list and applicable terms on the NHL.TV page and in the country-specific guide.
Why a game may be unavailable or blacked out
Broadcast rights can depend on the game, your location, and whether coverage is local, national, or out of market. A service that carries many games may still exclude a particular matchup because another broadcaster has the rights in your area, or because a stated blackout applies. If a game will not play, confirm your location and the game’s listing in the NHL guide, check the service’s blackout and authentication notices, and use the authorized broadcaster shown for that market. No legitimate free stream is established here for every game; unofficial streams and attempts to bypass restrictions are not reliable authorized options.
