CALE is an open-source maker project that turns a web page into a bitmap an ESP-based e-paper display can fetch on a schedule. Its calendar is a useful reference for building an always-on information screen, but it is not a ready-to-use consumer appliance: builders need compatible display hardware, firmware, network configuration and image-rendering software.
What CALE does
CALE combines two parts: firmware for an ESP8266 or ESP32 device that drives an e-paper display, and a server-side script that captures a web page and returns it as a BMP image. For the calendar example, the device wakes during its configured service window, retrieves the rendered image, updates the panel and returns to deep sleep. The project documentation includes an example Google Calendar reader and network setup instructions.
Creator Martin Fasani describes the goal as: “The goal is to build a dynamic calendar that is easy to install and has the lowest consumption as possible.” That is the project’s stated aim, not a measured guarantee of ease of setup or battery life.

Hackaday’s November 19, 2020 feature showed a 7.5-inch Waveshare panel with an 800 × 400 resolution, a TinyPICO ESP32 board, a 5,000 mAh battery and a 3D-printed frame reported as 11 mm deep. Those specifications describe that prototype, not requirements for every CALE build. Read the Hackaday feature.

The project documentation lists multiple panel variants and directs builders to select a display model and connect its SPI interface to the controller. It also names ESP8266 or ESP32 boards and a power bank as possible components. A different Waveshare 7.5-inch revision is described in the project log at 800 × 480, so check the exact panel revision rather than assuming all 7.5-inch displays share the same resolution. - Display: Choose a specific e-paper model supported by the firmware driver you intend to use.
- Controller and wiring: Match the board, SPI connections and panel requirements to the documented configuration.
- Power: Select a battery or power bank appropriate to the hardware and update schedule.
- Enclosure: The featured 3D-printed frame is an example, not a required part of the software.
Software status and setup work
The 2020 article discussed Arduino and ESP-IDF firmware variants and a CalEPD display component. The linked eink-calendar repository now labels that firmware unmaintained and points builders to CalEPD/CALE-IDF instead. CalEPD describes itself as an ESP-IDF C++ component for ESP32 and ESP32-S2, with e-paper display and touch integration. Its README says ESP-IDF v5 support has been merged; consult the repository for current framework requirements and model support before choosing parts. This is a DIY build, not a turnkey installation. Expect to configure a board and display, provide Wi-Fi settings, install firmware and set up the server-side page capture and image-conversion dependencies. The project pages provide instructions, but builders still need to follow them for their chosen hardware and software versions.
What to consider before building
Display compatibility
Do not treat “e-paper” or a screen size as sufficient compatibility information. Confirm the exact model and revision against the firmware driver list, then verify its controller and SPI wiring. A panel may need a different driver or configuration even when its size resembles the example.

Update timing
Decide how often the calendar must change. A schedule that updates less often may suit a household calendar that does not need minute-by-minute changes, while frequent refreshes affect power use and the experience of waiting for updates. Choose a refresh interval that fits the use case before estimating battery needs.
Battery expectations
CALE’s repository discusses low sleep current and offers a conditional runtime expectation, but it explicitly avoids a universal battery-life estimate because refresh frequency and battery choice vary. Treat its guidance as the project author’s estimate, not an independent test or a promised runtime. Capacity alone does not establish how long a particular build will last; the hardware and operating schedule matter too. Review the current CALE-IDF notes.

A reader of the Hackaday feature asked whether a small solar panel would eliminate battery changes. The article’s comments do not establish that solar charging would be electrically compatible or sufficient for this device, so that is a separate power-design question rather than a guaranteed maintenance solution.

CALE is a good fit to explore if you want to assemble and configure a custom information display, and are comfortable working with microcontrollers, wiring and software. If you mainly want a finished synchronized calendar with minimal setup, a DIY project may not meet that need; the sources here do not establish current availability, price or specifications for commercial alternatives.

If sourcing parts, treat a Waveshare 7.5-inch e-paper module as a component—not a complete calendar—and verify its exact model against the current firmware documentation before buying. The same check applies to an ESP development board and the chosen power source.
