You can enable Android apps on a store-bought Chromebook only if the device supports them and, when it is managed by a school or business, an authorized administrator allows them. For managed Chromebooks, the change is made in Google Admin console—not through a switch available to every person who bought the device. Education administrators must approve or allowlist apps rather than give students unrestricted access to every managed Google Play app.
First, identify who controls the Chromebook
If you own an unmanaged Chromebook, check whether its model supports Android apps and whether Google Play is available in the device settings. If it is enrolled in a business or school, its administrator controls app access. Buying a Chromebook at retail does not override management policies on an enrolled device.
Teachers and business owners need an administrator account with access to the Google Admin console to change organization settings. If you cannot open the relevant controls, ask your organization’s Google administrator to make the change or assign you the necessary role.

Google’s school deployment guidance says all Chromebook models launched after 2019 support Android apps. For an earlier model, check Google’s model-specific support information. Chromebook compatibility does not guarantee that every individual app will run well: apps can have their own memory, display, touch, stylus, or connectivity requirements.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Google recommends at least 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage for Android apps; the checked guidance does not state a publication year for this recommendation. Confirm the requirements of the specific apps you plan to deploy.
Before configuring access, the organization must set up Android management. Google’s setup instructions say to add an Android Enterprise subscription in Admin console billing. A super administrator must also accept Google Play’s Terms of Service. A ChromeOS Enterprise Upgrade is not required for every user-level Android app setting; some device and kiosk management paths have separate requirements.

Enable Android apps for managed users
- Sign in to the Google Admin console with an administrator account.
- Go to Devices > Chrome > Apps & extensions > User app settings. Organizations using Chrome Enterprise Core may have a Chrome browser settings path instead; follow the applicable instructions in Google’s Android app setup guidance.
- Select the organizational unit (OU) where the setting should apply. Use a narrower OU if only a department, class, or team needs Android apps.
- Under Additional app settings, open Android apps on Chrome Devices, choose Allow users to install Android apps, and save.
Google says settings usually take effect within minutes but can take up to an hour to apply to everyone. If users still do not see the expected access, allow time for the policy to propagate and confirm that the setting applies to their OU.

Choose which apps users can install
Enabling Android apps does not mean every app should be available to every user. In the Admin console, go to Devices > Chrome > Apps & extensions, add the app from Google Play, select it, and accept the permissions requested for your organization. Then choose its installation policy:

- Allow install: Users can install the approved app themselves.
- Force install: The app is installed automatically for users in the selected scope.
For education domains, Google marks unrestricted access to all managed Play apps as Not available for education domains. School administrators should select apps and configure their installation policies instead of expecting students to browse and install any Play Store app. See Google’s administrator instructions for the current controls.
Choose a deployment approach for your school or business
| Decision | Practical approach | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Web app or Android app | Try the web app first when it meets the need; enable the Android version when there is a specific reason. | Check app-specific device requirements and whether the app stores files locally or supports the needed offline use. |
| Allow install or force install | Allow installation when users should choose from approved apps; force-install only apps everyone in the selected group needs. | Some Android apps are large, and force-installing every approved app can consume device storage. |
| Broad or narrow rollout | Assign apps by OU or group and test them with intended users before a wider rollout. | Small pilots help identify compatibility, classroom workflow, and support issues before more devices are affected. |
Android apps are installed on the Chromebook, and some can keep files locally. On shared classroom devices, consider what happens to locally stored work when a different student uses the Chromebook. Google recommends caution with broad force-installation and a narrow allocation of apps; its deployment guidance is available at ChromeOS device management for Android apps.

If a retail Chromebook says it is managed
A Chromebook bought from a retailer can still be enrolled in an organization. Google says a wiped ChromeOS device automatically re-enrolls by default when the organization’s forced re-enrollment policy is enabled. Administrators can instead require manual re-enrollment or turn forced re-enrollment off; see Google’s forced re-enrollment guidance.
If the Chromebook shows an organization-managed screen or blocks personal sign-in, contact the organization that manages it or the seller. Do not try to bypass enrollment to enable Google Play: the organization’s policy remains in control.
