Briefly is Relay’s local-first legal assistant for law firms that want filing and practice workflows to run on hardware in their office. Relay says client matters are not sent to outside AI providers, but that claim is not an independent security audit or proof of compliance. The key procurement question is therefore not just whether processing is local, but exactly what data leaves the office, how the system is maintained, and which tasks it can reliably support.

What Briefly is designed to do

Relay presents Briefly as a conversational assistant for filing work and broader law-office operations. Its advertised filing features include citation checks against an offline reporter snapshot, tables of authorities and contents, and argument review on the office machine. It also describes deadline extraction from filings and orders, drafting assistance, automation rules, matter files, and billing capture. These are Relay’s product claims; the vendor page does not establish independent accuracy or performance results. Relay’s Briefly product page

Filing tasks

  • Citation verification: Relay says Briefly flags subsequent history using an offline reporter snapshot. An offline snapshot is not the same as a live search of current legal authorities, so firms should ask how the snapshot is updated and what jurisdictions and materials it covers.
  • Tables and document output: The vendor says Briefly can generate tables of authorities and contents in a firm’s house style and export them to Word while preserving formatting.
  • Argument review: Relay advertises on-device review of arguments. Treat output as a review aid requiring attorney verification, not as a substitute for legal judgment.
  • Deadlines: Relay says the assistant can extract deadlines from filings and orders. Staff should verify extracted dates against the source document and applicable rules before calendaring them.

Work beyond a filing

Relay also describes matter files, background drafting of time entries for review, and automation rules that run on the firm’s machine and queue drafts for sign-off. The page says entries can be handed off to Clio, PracticePanther, or a spreadsheet. It describes a shared office server for partners, associates, and staff, with chats, documents, and matters shared across seats. Confirm current integrations, multi-user setup, permission controls, and approval workflow with Relay before treating these as procurement specifications. Relay’s Briefly product page

What “zero data egress” means here

Relay says, “Nothing about a client matter is ever sent to an outside AI provider. Every inference runs on the computer in your office.” It also says the server reports licensing and update information such as seats, version, and health, rather than client files. That is a vendor description of its data path, not an independently verified finding. Ask for technical documentation that identifies all network connections, update mechanisms, diagnostic data, and any services that may handle matter information. Relay’s Briefly product page

Local inference can reduce exposure to external model providers, but it does not by itself determine whether a firm meets its confidentiality, security, or regulatory obligations. A firm still needs to assess access controls, identity management, device and server security, backups, retention, auditability, updates, incident response, and who can access shared matters. Relay characterizes its design as mapping to ABA Model Rule 1.6 and state analogues; that marketing statement is not a legal conclusion, certification, or substitute for the firm’s own review. How it differs from other local-first legal tools

“Local” describes a data-handling approach, not a uniform feature set or guarantee that a product never communicates over a network. These vendor descriptions illustrate different boundaries and jobs:

Product Advertised use Data and connectivity description What it does not establish
Briefly (Relay) Filing checks plus drafting, automation, matter workflows, and billing capture. Relay says inference runs on office hardware, client matters are not sent to outside AI providers, and licensing/update information is reported. Independent security testing, verified citation accuracy, exact hardware specifications, or a firm’s compliance outcome. Relay
SealedBrief Local document reading for PDFs, Office files, and scanned images. Its page distinguishes a compute process that handles documents and makes no network connection from a presentation process that handles licensing and optional updates. It also says data is encrypted at rest. Filing court documents or browsing the web. The vendor recommends a GPU of 12 GB or greater for faster responses and says CPU-only use is noticeably slower; that guidance applies to SealedBrief, not Briefly. SealedBrief
BriefCatch Standalone Document editing assistance. The vendor says it works locally, can run without internet, and does not transmit, store, or access document data through external servers. Generative AI features: the vendor says no AI features or generative AI are used during processing. BriefCatch Standalone
WorkInPrivate Lawyer-focused document analysis and drafting, including matter-specific local knowledge bases. The vendor says it runs locally after a one-time model download and can analyze PDFs, DOCX files, and images. Legal research or compliance replacement; the vendor explicitly disclaims those roles. WorkInPrivate

These descriptions are not equivalent security guarantees. For each product, distinguish document-processing traffic from licensing, updates, downloads, and diagnostics, and establish whether the tool retrieves current external legal authorities or works only from local material. A document assistant that does not file in court or search current law is not interchangeable with a filing workflow product.

Deployment, hardware, and price questions

Relay describes Briefly as running on a firm-owned office machine and says the machine is a separate purchase sized to the firm’s caseload. Its page lists early-adopter software pricing of $50 per user per month for one year during the early-adopter period, followed by $150 per user per month after that period closes. For firms with qualifying existing hardware, Relay lists a one-time $300 software charge. These are time-sensitive vendor-listed terms viewed in 2026; confirm availability, eligibility, taxes, support, and current pricing directly with Relay. The page does not establish a specific machine configuration or compatibility matrix. Relay’s Briefly product page

Before budgeting or deployment, ask Relay for a written specification covering supported hardware, operating system, storage, network requirements, user and matter isolation, backup and restore, update cadence, and what happens if the office server is unavailable. The separate 12 GB GPU recommendation in SealedBrief’s materials should not be used to infer Briefly’s hardware needs.

A practical evaluation checklist for a law firm

  1. Map the data path. Request a diagram of where documents, prompts, outputs, logs, licensing checks, updates, and diagnostics travel. Confirm whether any client matter can reach a third-party AI or cloud service.
  2. Test representative work. In a controlled evaluation, use matters and filing formats representative of the practice. Check citations against authoritative sources, verify deadline extraction against the underlying orders, and inspect Word output for formatting and completeness.
  3. Define human sign-off. Decide who verifies citations, deadlines, generated drafts, and time entries, and where approvals are recorded. A queued draft is not a verified work product.
  4. Review firm controls. Obtain details on authentication, role-based access, shared-matter permissions, encryption, backup, retention, audit logs, and secure deletion. Confirm how access is removed when a staff member leaves.
  5. Plan for operations. Establish who patches and monitors the office machine, how updates are obtained, what licensing telemetry contains, and how the firm continues work during hardware failure or an outage.
  6. Check legal and professional obligations. Have the firm’s responsible counsel or security lead evaluate the actual deployment against applicable confidentiality duties, policies, client agreements, and jurisdiction-specific requirements.

Who should consider Briefly

Briefly may merit evaluation by firms seeking to keep AI inference and matter workflows on office hardware while combining filing tasks with other practice operations. It is a poor fit to choose solely on the phrase “zero data egress”: the firm needs to confirm the complete network and operational model, validate task accuracy in its own workflow, and decide whether the advertised filing and practice features match its requirements. The available product description does not establish independent security assurance, current-law research capability, or a specific compatible server.
