“Brain-eating amoeba” usually refers to Naegleria fowleri, a microscopic organism found in soil and warm fresh water. Infection is exceptionally rare, but the route is specific: water containing the ameba must go up the nose and reach the brain. Swallowing contaminated water does not cause this infection.
How does a brain-eating amoeba infect someone?
Naegleria fowleri can live in warm freshwater such as lakes, rivers, ponds, and hot springs. It may also be found in poorly maintained recreational water and tap water. The organism thrives in heat. The CDC’s transmission guidance explains that infection occurs when contaminated water enters the nose; the ameba can then travel to the brain and cause primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM).
Most reported U.S. infections have been associated with swimming, diving, or similar activities in warm freshwater. A separate documented route is rinsing the nose or sinuses with contaminated water, including tap water. A neti pot or rinse bottle is not itself the cause: the relevant issue is whether the water used is safe.

- USE WITH REPLACEMENT FILTER: Personal water filter bottle is compatible with Brita water bottle replacement filters, which should be changed every 40 gallons or about every two months
What symptoms should prompt urgent medical care?
Early symptoms can include headache, fever, nausea, and vomiting. They usually begin about five days after exposure, but may start anywhere from one to 12 days later. As PAM progresses, symptoms may include a stiff neck, confusion, inattention, seizures, hallucinations, and coma. The CDC lists symptoms and timing.
These symptoms overlap with more common illnesses, so they cannot establish a diagnosis on their own. But sudden fever, headache, vomiting, or stiff neck—especially after warm freshwater exposure—warrants immediate medical attention. CDC’s public-facing advice is: “You should seek medical care right away if you suddenly develop fever, headache, vomiting, or stiff neck.”

How can you reduce the risk while swimming?
Because the ameba can be present in warm freshwater, CDC recommends limiting the chance that water enters your nose. Its swimming prevention guidance advises:
- Hold your nose or wear a nose clip when jumping or diving.
- Keep your head above water in hot springs.
- Avoid digging or stirring up sediment in shallow water.
These steps reduce exposure opportunities; they cannot guarantee that infection will be prevented. The CDC describes the overall likelihood as very low: fewer than 10 people a year in the United States get PAM, according to its 2025 transmission guidance.

- LifeStraw Go Series is the ULTIMATE SIDEKICK. The BPA-Free bottle filters out nasties so you can fill up from airport bathrooms, a tap in Mexico, or a gas station while road-tripping
- IMPROVES TASTE: the Carbon filter reduces chlorine, odors + organic chemical matter
- FILTERS OUT CONTAMINANTS: the Membrane microfilter protects against 99.999999% Bacteria (including E.coli + Salmonella), 99.999% Parasites (including Giardia and Cryptosporidium), 99.999% Microplastics, sand, dirt, and cloudiness
- LONG LASTING: The membrane microfilter lasts up to 1,000 gal (4,000 L) - about five years of daily use. Carbon filter lasts up to 26 gallons (100 L) - about two months
- SAVES WASTE: The membrane microfilter lasts up to 4,000 liters. That’s 8,000 single use plastic water bottles out of our parks, our oceans, and our communities
What water is safe for sinus rinsing?
Use distilled water or tap water that has been boiled and then cooled for nasal or sinus rinsing. Do not use untreated tap water for this purpose. The CDC’s prevention guidance puts the priority plainly: “If you rinse your sinuses or cleanse your nasal passages, make sure the water you use is safe.”
Can you get PAM from drinking water, a pool, or another person?
- Swallowing contaminated water: No. The infection route is water entering the nose, not the digestive tract.
- A properly maintained and disinfected pool: CDC says people cannot get PAM from swimming in one.
- Another person: PAM is not spread person to person.
- Shower mist or humidifier vapor: CDC reports no evidence of transmission through water vapor or aerosol droplets.
These distinctions matter: the warning is not that ordinary contact with water is dangerous, but that contaminated water entering the nose can create a rare risk.

How rare is infection, and how severe is it?
The figures depend on the period counted. CDC’s July 2025 overview reports 167 U.S. cases from 1962 through 2024, with four survivors. Its May 2026 surveillance page reports 180 cases diagnosed in the United States from 1937 through 2025; cases from 1937–1961 were diagnosed retrospectively. Those totals describe different date ranges and should not be combined. CDC overview; CDC surveillance data

PAM is difficult to diagnose because it is rare and its early symptoms resemble those of more common illnesses. Diagnosis requires laboratory testing, available in only a few U.S. laboratories, including CDC. It progresses rapidly and is usually fatal; treatment decisions belong with medical professionals.
