Boron is used in agriculture as a plant micronutrient, in established materials such as glass and ceramics, and in nuclear systems because boron-10 absorbs neutrons. Other boron-containing materials are being studied for hydrogen-related energy applications, but those research results should not be confused with routine commercial deployment. The specific role depends on the compound: borax, borosilicate glass, boron carbide, and boron nitride are not interchangeable.
How boron is used in agriculture
Plants need boron in small amounts. It contributes to plant cell-wall structure and is required for growth, pollination, and seed formation. The U.S. Geological Survey’s 2019 Minerals Yearbook describes boron fertilizer use to promote fruit and seed production; the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements also summarizes boron’s role in plants.
Fertilizers can supply boron through compounds including borax, boric acid, and calcium borate. The USGS yearbook describes delivery by sprays or through irrigation water. Boron is a micronutrient, not a fertilizer to apply indiscriminately: whether a product is appropriate depends on the crop and soil, so follow local agronomic guidance and the product label rather than assuming a general rate.

The scale figures often cited for this sector are historical: the USGS 2019 Minerals Yearbook estimated agriculture accounted for approximately 15% of world boron consumption. That is the yearbook’s estimate, not a current market-share figure.

- VERSATILE USAGE: Ideal for a wide range of crops, including Tomato, Okra, Brinjal, Chilly, Gourds, Beans, and more.
- GROWTH AND HIGH YIELD: Our specialized formula guarantees robust growth and a bountiful crop yield
Where boron compounds appear in established materials
Boron’s materials uses vary with its chemical form. The Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water identifies borosilicate glass as the main use of boron compounds, while also listing agriculture, fire retardants, soaps, and detergents. Its overview was last updated 20 May 2026.
| Compound or material | Function or property | Sector and maturity |
|---|---|---|
| Borates used in glassmaking | Used in borosilicate glass products | Established industrial use |
| Boron carbide | Hard ceramic and abrasive; also valued for neutron absorption | Established applications include abrasives, armor, and nuclear shielding or control |
| Boron nitride | Refractory material; atom-thin hexagonal layers are also being researched as hydrogen-isotope filters | Refractory applications and separate research-stage energy work |
The Australian government states that boron compounds are mainly used in borosilicate glass products, as well as in agriculture, fire retardants, soaps, and detergents. Boron carbide and boron nitride have distinct properties and uses; neither should be described as simply another name for borates or elemental boron.

The USGS 2019 Minerals Yearbook says borates had more than 300 end uses. That historical figure conveys the breadth of borate applications, not a count of boron uses verified for 2026.
Boron’s established role in nuclear energy
Boron-10 absorbs neutrons, a property useful in nuclear applications. Boron-containing materials, including boron carbide, are used in reactor control and shielding contexts. The USGS and India’s Bhabha Atomic Research Centre describe these nuclear uses.

This is boron’s clearest established connection to energy systems in the sources cited here. It is a materials role, not evidence that boron is a common clean-energy fuel.

Some boron-containing materials are being investigated for energy technologies, but the evidence describes research rather than routine infrastructure. A U.S. Department of Energy account reports work on atom-thin hexagonal boron nitride membranes for separating hydrogen isotopes. DOE Hydrogen Program reports also cover research into boron-containing materials for hydrogen storage and for dehydrogenating hydrogen carriers.

These examples show how a material property might be explored for an energy-system task; they do not establish that the membranes or boron-containing storage and carrier materials are widely deployed commercial technology. DOE describes fusion as a potential clean-energy source while noting that scientific and technological challenges remain. The cited material does not support describing boron as a commercial fusion fuel.
