Ben Simmons could give Sacramento a tall secondary ball-handler who pushes the ball in transition and helps organize possessions when lead guard Darius Acuff Jr. is off the floor. But this is a possible use of Simmons, not a confirmed role: NBA.com’s 2026-27 preview says Acuff is poised to take control of the offense and leaves Simmons’s ultimate role open.
What is confirmed about Simmons and Sacramento’s offense?
Sacramento signed Simmons to a one-year, $3.5 million agreement on September 8, 2026, according to NBA.com’s signing report. That report says he met with coach Doug Christie, but does not identify an assigned position or offensive role.
Simmons did not play in 2025-26. His last season was 2024-25, when he appeared in 51 games for Brooklyn and the LA Clippers and averaged 5.0 points, 5.6 assists and 4.7 rebounds in 22.0 minutes per game. Those are his combined statistics from that season, not a forecast of his production in Sacramento.
There is a separate plan for the lead role. NBA.com’s 2026-27 Kings preview says rookie Darius Acuff Jr., the seventh overall pick, is poised to take control of the offense. Acuff’s 23.5 points, 6.4 assists and 44% three-point shooting came in his freshman season at Arkansas; they are college results, not an NBA projection.

How could a point-forward role change the attack?
“Point forward” describes a player who initiates or directs possessions despite not being a conventional point guard. It does not necessarily mean starting, serving as the primary point guard, or closing games. In Sacramento, a Simmons point-forward role could complement Acuff rather than replace him.
Let Simmons start some possessions in transition
After a defensive rebound, Simmons could bring the ball up himself and look to attack before the opponent sets its defense. That gives Sacramento another route into offense and could let Acuff receive the ball farther up the court or move into a scoring action. Whether this produces better chances than having a guard initiate is something the Kings would need to show in games.

Use him as a secondary organizer
With Acuff drawing the first line of pressure, Simmons could handle the ball during a later action, find a teammate cutting or open on the perimeter, or keep a possession moving. If Simmons and Acuff play staggered minutes, Simmons might also help organize units while Acuff sits. No published plan confirms that rotation, however.

Moving the ball forward quickly is not the same as reliably creating a scoring advantage against a set defense. Sacramento will need to assess whether Simmons’s half-court passing leads to rim pressure and open shots, or mainly to safe ball movement. A point-forward label alone cannot answer that.

What are the spacing and lineup trade-offs?
A Simmons-led possession may offer size and passing, but it can also create a spacing problem if defenders leave him to help elsewhere. The available reporting does not establish Simmons’s current shooting level or show how any proposed Sacramento lineup would space the floor. The effect will depend on who shares the court with him and how opponents defend those players.
NBA.com says Christie must integrate returning players and new additions as Sacramento works to find an identity. It also flags the health of key players, including Zach LaVine, Keegan Murray and Domantas Sabonis, as important. Their availability—and the other shooters and ball-handlers on the floor—will shape whether Simmons can initiate without making it easier for a defense to crowd the lane.

The scale of the challenge is context, not evidence of a Simmons effect: Sacramento went 22-60 in 2025-26 and ranked 26th in offense, with a 110.6 rating, according to the preview. Simmons missed that season, so those figures neither measure his impact nor show what will change with him in the lineup.

How to tell whether the fit is working
In preseason and early regular-season games, look past the position listed beside Simmons’s name. The more useful questions are who actually starts possessions, what the lineups produce, and whether the role holds up across meaningful minutes.

- Initiation: Track who brings the ball up, triggers the first action and handles late-clock possessions: Acuff, Simmons or another guard.
- Spacing: Note how many credible shooters share the floor and whether defenders leave Simmons to help elsewhere.
- Advantage creation: Watch whether Simmons’s passes lead to drives, rim attempts or open shots—not merely another pass around the perimeter.
- Transition: See whether Simmons initiating after rebounds gets Sacramento into earlier attacks before defenses are set.
- Pressure and turnovers: Observe whether opponents disrupt his passing windows or slow the Kings before the offense is organized.
- Fit with the available core: Compare the role across combinations with Acuff, LaVine, Murray and Sabonis, rather than assuming one lineup will always be available.
- Role reliability: Consider minutes and availability alongside on-court results. Simmons’s absence for all of 2025-26 means the available reports do not establish his readiness or likely workload.
Lineup minutes and possession-level film or statistics can help answer those questions, but early samples are small. A few successful possessions would not establish a lasting offensive effect.
