After a fraudulent UPI transfer, tracing is a coordinated process—not a feature that reveals a suspect’s identity from a UPI ID. Your transaction details and evidence help identify the payment; the app and bank handle payment-related reporting, while 1930, the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and State/UT police support financial-fraud reporting, fund-blocking coordination and investigation. Report promptly, but understand that a complaint does not guarantee a freeze or refund.
What does “tracing” a UPI fraud actually mean?
Tracing starts with identifying the specific payment and the accounts or intermediaries associated with it. You provide the transaction reference and supporting evidence; banks and payment intermediaries have relevant transaction context; and police assess the complaint and can coordinate with those institutions. The process may help authorities identify where funds went and whether money can be blocked, but a UPI ID alone does not give a victim the recipient’s legal identity.
There is no published, universal technical sequence for every UPI app, payment service provider, issuer or beneficiary bank, and police unit. The Ministry of Home Affairs’ description of the Citizen Financial Cyber Frauds Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS) establishes the high-level complaint-processing and bank-coordination route; institution-level handling can depend on the case.
What should you do after a fraudulent UPI transfer?
Use the reporting channels together rather than treating an app complaint, bank contact or cybercrime report as a substitute for all the others. The app can help with a transaction-level issue; the bank is the point to contact about a fraudulent transaction; 1930 and the portal support cyber-fraud reporting and coordination; and police handle investigation.

-
Save the transaction record and evidence
Record the 12-digit transaction ID or UTR, date, amount, and the bank, wallet or merchant involved. Note the app used and any payer or payee details shown. Save the receipt and relevant bank statement, along with messages, emails, URLs, chats, screenshots or images connected to the incident. The portal’s complainant checklist asks for transaction details, while its FAQ recommends keeping relevant evidence and providing as much useful information as possible.
-
Raise the issue in the UPI app and contact your bank
Open the transaction in the app and use its available complaint or status options to document the issue. App labels and features can change, so use the current transaction screen or the app’s support route. NPCI’s July 2023 UPI Help guidance says users reporting a fraudulent transaction should connect with their bank. An app dispute can help with transaction handling, but it is not itself a police investigation.

Report the financial cyber fraud through 1930 and the portal
Call 1930 as soon as possible for assistance lodging an online cyber complaint, and submit the financial-fraud complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. The Ministry of Home Affairs describes CFCFRMS as supporting immediate reporting so coordinated action may help stop money from being siphoned. When the portal issues an acknowledgement or reference, keep it; the portal says it can be used to track the complaint’s status.

Complete the portal follow-up required by the applicable instructions
A separate cyber-fraud instruction document on the portal is explicitly marked “For Delhi Only.” It says a caller reporting through 1930 must complete portal registration within 24 hours. That deadline belongs to those Delhi-specific instructions; do not assume it is a nationwide rule. Follow the directions given for your complaint and location.

Keep the reference details for follow-up
Retain the portal acknowledgement, transaction reference and any bank or app complaint number. These details help you refer to the same incident when seeking a status update from the relevant channel.
How can a report lead to funds being blocked?
Under the process described in the portal’s Delhi-specific instructions, a designated police officer examines and verifies a complaint before contacting a bank or intermediary to block the money involved. Separately, the Ministry of Home Affairs says CFCFRMS includes complaint processing, bank coordination, lien marking, grievance redressal and restoration modules. These descriptions explain how a report can prompt coordination; they do not mean every report instantly freezes an entire recipient account or that funds will still be available when action is taken.

A hold, lien or other block is not the same as money being returned. The official sources describe a process, not a guaranteed response time, freeze, chargeback or recovery in an individual case. State and Union Territory law-enforcement agencies handle cybercrime complaints and investigations; the central government and I4C provide national coordination and supporting systems.

What do national fraud-response figures tell you?
In a Ministry of Home Affairs parliamentary reply posted on 28 July 2026, I4C reported that CFCFRMS had helped save more than ₹11,158 crore across more than 32.80 lakh complaints, with figures through 30 June 2026. This is a system-wide figure—not the chance that a particular complainant will recover money. CFCFRMS was launched in 2021, according to the same Ministry release.

What should you not assume or do?
- Do not assume that filing a complaint guarantees a freeze or refund; the outcome depends on the case and whether funds can be acted on.
- Do not assume an app complaint alone initiates a police investigation, or that a UPI ID reveals a person’s legal identity.
- Do not treat the Delhi-only 24-hour portal instruction as an all-India deadline.
- Do not send extra money to anyone claiming it will “unlock” a refund, or share your UPI PIN or OTP. Use the bank and official reporting channels.
