A backup quarterback prepares in two stages: learn the offense before kickoff, then stay engaged with the game and ready to take over. The details vary by college program, and neither a tablet nor a live helmet feed is a universal part of the role.
Build readiness before game day
Learn the offense, not just the play names
A reserve needs to understand the team’s terminology, assignments, calls and decision rules well enough to execute without a long reset if the role changes. Boise State said it continued team meetings to help players master the playbook even after adopting coach-to-player communication technology. Boise State’s September 2024 account illustrates why knowing the offense remains central even when technology is available.
Use practice to prepare for a changed role
Practice gives a quarterback repetitions in the offense and a chance to be ready if called on. A 2015 report on Arizona State reserve Mike Bercovici said he immersed himself in the playbook and approached practice and game preparation as though he were the starter; he entered after the starter was injured. That is one player’s historical example, not a prescribed routine for every backup. Read the ESPN report on Bercovici.

Stay connected to the game while on the sideline
When not playing, a backup’s useful preparation is to follow the game and remain ready to receive the team’s instructions. That means understanding the situation and being prepared to execute when called, rather than assuming there is one standard sideline task list. Reports from bowl games describe video review and coach feedback between series, but they do not establish that every backup uses a tablet or has identical duties. The Associated Press reported on those postseason technology experiments.

Know how the team communicates—and what happens if technology fails
NCAA-approved optional football technology rules introduced for the 2024 season included coach-to-player helmet communication and video tablets for team personnel. Permission for these tools does not mean every backup receives a live feed: who is equipped and how the system operates depend on the applicable rules, configuration and team procedures. Consult the NCAA football rules page for current eligibility and procedures, which can change by season; the NCAA’s April 2024 announcement describes the optional rules approved for that season.
Boise State said it retained traditional signal-calling as a fallback and continued playbook meetings. That is a program-specific example of a broader readiness principle: a quarterback must know the offense and its communication plan, not rely on equipment alone. The AP’s account of 2023 postseason experimentation also noted that Ohio State coach Ryan Day saw value in the technology but said adopting a new system required preparation time.

What is—and is not—standard
There is no single sideline routine established by the available college-football sources. A team’s procedures determine whether a reserve uses a tablet, receives coach communication, checks a wristband or talks with a coach. The sources support the value of learning the offense, practicing and staying engaged; they do not establish a universal warmup, equipment list or step-by-step game-day checklist.
