b0x was presented in 2018 as an Ethereum-based protocol for margin lending and trading, with valuation and liquidation handled by competing oracle providers. The proposal was designed to plug into exchanges and relays rather than operate as an exchange itself. The available sources describe the project’s plans at that time; they do not establish that the protocol is currently operating or maintained.
What b0x was designed to do
In a March 27, 2018 article, b0x was described as a peer-to-peer funding and trading protocol built on Ethereum and integrated with 0x. The project’s goal was to provide infrastructure for margin lending and trading that exchanges or relays could incorporate. A decentralized web application frontend and a token for relay incentives and protocol governance were also part of the historical project description. The distinction between a protocol and an exchange matters: b0x was meant to supply underlying functions that another application could use, not to serve as the trading venue itself. The team’s original announcement, dated February 4, 2018, set out a design split between a protocol layer and an oracle layer. [c003]
How the liquidation oracle marketplace was supposed to work
The bZx whitepaper summarized its model this way: “Assets are valued and liquidated via competing oracle providers.” In the proposal, oracle providers would sit outside the core protocol and handle asset valuation and liquidation. That separation was intended to allow multiple providers to compete and experiment, with competition potentially reducing oracle fees. Those were design goals; the sources do not demonstrate that fees fell or that the marketplace operated as intended. [c002]

Monitoring margin-account health
The 2018 team announcement said the oracle layer would monitor margin accounts and liquidate trades when accounts fell below maintenance requirements. It also proposed an interface for third-party oracle developers alongside a flagship oracle contract. [c003]
Liquidation incentives and a price check
The announcement described bounty hunters as having an incentive to call the liquidation function. It also proposed checking prices against a KyberNetwork on-chain price feed to challenge malicious or premature liquidation attempts. What decentralizing the oracle layer could—and could not—mean
Moving valuation and liquidation outside the core protocol could make it easier for different providers to participate, and could give developers room to test alternative approaches. But modularity alone does not establish that providers are independent, that their prices are accurate, or that liquidations are fair and reliable. The project’s whitepaper explains the intended rationale; it does not provide independent evidence of those outcomes. [c002]
