Short answer: If you cancel the AT&T line tied to a device installment plan, AT&T says the remaining unpaid device balance becomes due immediately and appears on your final bill. Promotional bill credits generally stop when service is canceled under the applicable offer terms, so you should not assume future credits will cover the accelerated balance.

The installment agreement and the promotion are separate. Your agreement schedules what you owe for the phone; the promotion applies a conditional monthly discount. Paying off the phone early or upgrading can also stop future credits, depending on the offer attached to your line.

Device payments and promotional credits are different obligations

AT&T device financing uses an installment agreement for the phone and a separate promotion for any monthly discount. The installment agreement establishes the scheduled device payments. The promotion reduces eligible bills only while its conditions remain satisfied.

AT&T describes some offers as equal monthly discounts spread across an installment term that is often 36 months, although the term and credit amount depend on the specific agreement. The device payment does not disappear because a credit is expected; each billing cycle contains both the scheduled installment and, when eligible, the promotional discount.

The cited AT&T Device Installment Plan Terms of Service describe the transaction as This is a 0% APR installment transaction. Those terms also say there is no finance charge, interest, origination fee, or other cost connected with that agreement. That language applies to the agreement cited; your own contract controls if its terms differ. Read the current agreement associated with your line at AT&T’s Device Installment Plan Terms of Service.

What keeps a promotion active

Offer requirements vary, but AT&T billing guidance commonly requires you to keep qualifying wireless service, leave the eligible device on the designated installment plan, maintain account eligibility, and satisfy any trade-in or other promotional conditions. The legal terms for your particular offer—not a general advertising page—determine whether credits continue.

What happens when you cancel the line

AT&T’s cancellation support page states: The remaining unpaid installment balance is due immediately when you cancel the line linked to the plan. That accelerated amount is placed on the final bill. If you cancel only one line, the rule applies to the installment plan linked to that line; other lines and their agreements are handled separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Under the cited offer terms, canceling wireless service ends the promotional credits while leaving the remaining device balance payable. Because AT&T has many offers, treat that result as an example of the governing structure rather than a universal promise about every promotion. Open your own offer terms before scheduling cancellation.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

AT&T also says a mid-cycle cancellation does not prorate the service period. You can therefore receive charges for the remainder of the current service period in addition to the accelerated device balance and any other items on the final bill. See AT&T’s cancellation support guidance for the current account-billing explanation (the page was last updated July 8, 2026).

How early payoff or an upgrade affects credits

Ending service is not the only event that can interrupt a promotion. AT&T’s billing help says that keeping monthly device discounts usually requires retaining service and the same device on the installment plan for the full term. If you pay the device off early or upgrade, remaining discounts may stop. The AT&T trade-in terms carry a similar warning for promotional credits after early payoff or early upgrade.

Use “may stop” unless your own offer explicitly says what happens. Some promotions are tied to a particular installment agreement, device, line, or trade-in transaction. Paying the balance can change one of those conditions even if you keep other AT&T service.

When credits appear on the bill

Credit timing is not uniform. AT&T’s general billing guidance says a credit usually appears on the next bill but can take up to two bill periods. Trade-in promotions may take two or three bill cycles. One cited offer-specific legal page says credits start within three bills and that catch-up credits follow after credits begin.

Those time frames describe different guidance and offer structures. Do not treat “next bill” as a guarantee for a trade-in promotion, and do not assume an offer-specific three-bill promise applies to a different phone or promotion.

Find the credit on an AT&T bill

  1. Sign in to your AT&T account and open the billing center.
  2. Choose Last bill.
  3. Select View discounts to display discounts associated with the bill and its lines.
  4. If the account has multiple lines, confirm that you are viewing the line expected to receive the device promotion.
  5. Compare the discount description and amount with the offer confirmation and installment agreement.

AT&T documents this navigation and timing in its billing support article. If the expected credit is missing after the applicable window, save the offer confirmation, trade-in records and bills before contacting support.

How to decide before canceling

1. Identify the exact installment plan

Locate the line’s device installment agreement and record the original term, remaining payment count and current unpaid balance. A common 36-month term is only a general AT&T example, not proof that your plan has 36 payments.

2. Identify the promotion attached to that line

Find the offer name or confirmation, including any trade-in receipt, qualifying-device requirement, service requirement and stated credit schedule. An offer page for a different phone or date cannot establish your eligibility.

3. Estimate the financial effect using account figures

Use the displayed unpaid installment balance as the amount that can accelerate. Separately note the number of future credits you would lose if the promotion ends. Do not subtract unposted or merely expected credits from the final-bill amount; AT&T’s cancellation rule concerns the unpaid installment balance, while credits depend on the offer remaining active.

4. Check the service-period timing

Because AT&T says mid-cycle cancellations are not prorated, check the current service-period end date. A cancellation near the start of a cycle can produce a different final service charge than one near the end.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Save evidence before submitting the request

  • Download or screenshot the installment agreement and current payoff display.
  • Save the promotion’s legal terms and confirmation number.
  • Keep trade-in shipment, inspection and acceptance records when applicable.
  • Retain recent bills showing credits already posted.

6. Ask AT&T to explain the final bill

Request a line-by-line explanation of the accelerated device balance, service-period charges, taxes, credits already applied and any credits that will be removed. Ask the representative to identify the specific offer term used for the credit decision, and record the date and interaction reference.

Common situations and what they mean

You cancel the line while installments remain

The remaining unpaid installments are due immediately on the final bill, and credits under the applicable offer can end. Your final bill may also include the non-prorated remainder of the service period.

You keep AT&T service but pay off the phone

Early payoff can satisfy the device obligation while still ending the promotion if the offer requires the device to remain on its original installment plan. Check the offer before making the payment.

You upgrade before the term ends

An upgrade can alter the original device and installment arrangement. AT&T warns that remaining promotional credits may stop after an early upgrade, particularly for trade-in offers. Confirm the effect on the old line before accepting the new transaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The first credit has not appeared yet

Check whether you are still within the stated window: general guidance allows up to two bill periods, trade-in guidance may allow two or three cycles, and some offer terms specify a start within three bills with catch-up credits. If the deadline has passed, use the billing-center steps above and contact AT&T with your documentation.

What the public pages cannot tell you

Public offer pages do not reveal an individual line’s current payoff, posted credits, unpaid taxes or final-bill total. Those values depend on your account, agreement, transaction history and the promotion selected at purchase. No general article can calculate them accurately without that account information.

Likewise, a legal page describing a particular trade-in amount or start window does not prove that the same deal is currently available. The cited example at AT&T’s offer terms page is offer-specific; use it to understand how terms can be written, not as a current universal promotion.

Practical checklist before you act

  • Confirm whether you are canceling the line, paying off the device, or upgrading; they can produce different credit outcomes.
  • Read the exact installment agreement and promotion for that line.
  • Record the unpaid balance separately from expected future credits.
  • Check the billing cycle because cancellation is not prorated mid-cycle.
  • Review Billing center > Last bill > View discounts for posted credits.
  • Keep all offer, trade-in and billing records.
  • Get the final-bill explanation and any promised adjustment in writing or with a reference number.

Bottom line for an AT&T cancellation decision

Canceling the linked line can turn the remaining device installments into an immediate final-bill charge while ending future promotional credits under the offer. Continuing service and payments is the path most consistent with preserving credits, but only when the promotion’s conditions remain satisfied. Paying off early or upgrading can also interrupt credits. The safest sequence is to read your exact offer, inspect the account’s unpaid balance and discounts, and obtain a final-bill estimate before changing the line.
