Dividends from Indian shares are generally reported as income from other sources, but tax withheld when a dividend is paid is not necessarily your final tax bill. Your final liability depends on the tax year, the applicable tax regime, your total income and taxpayer status. There is also a law change: events up to 31 March 2026 fall under the Income Tax Act, 1961; withholding events on or after 1 April 2026 use the Income Tax Act, 2025 and its renumbered provisions. Check the current official guidance for the year and circumstances that apply to you.

How are dividends on Indian shares taxed?

For the return, report dividend income as income from other sources. The notified return form’s Schedule OS asks for gross dividend income and separates it into categories. Use the applicable return form and schedule for your assessment year, rather than treating the amount deposited after withholding as the full dividend income.

Keep the dividend and tax information shown by your broker, bank and tax records available when preparing the return. The official schedule establishes how dividend income is reported; it does not prescribe one universal reconciliation method for every investor.

Is TDS on dividends the final tax?

No. Tax deducted at source (TDS) is collected during the year; it does not by itself determine the recipient’s final liability. The amount ultimately due depends on the tax rules and the investor’s circumstances. Compare the tax calculated for your return with the TDS credit available to you; a withholding percentage alone cannot establish whether you owe more or are due a credit.

For the preceding framework, the Government of India’s Finance Bill, 2026 schedule identifies withholding rates of 10% for a specified dividend category and 20% for other dividend income. These are schedule-specific withholding rates, not a universal final tax rate for every shareholder. The applicable category and rules depend on the payment and taxpayer circumstances.

Which rules apply to dividends paid or credited around 1 April 2026?

The governing withholding provisions depend on when the dividend was paid or credited. The Income Tax Department’s transition guidance says the Income Tax Act, 1961 applies where the relevant event occurred by 31 March 2026, while events on or after 1 April 2026 are governed by the Income Tax Act, 2025 provisions. The Department says TDS rates and monetary thresholds were retained, while provisions were consolidated and renumbered. Use the provision reference for the event date rather than carrying an old section number forward.

As the Department puts it in its TDS Compliance FAQ: “No. The TDS rates and monetary thresholds for all categories of payments have been retained as they are under the Income Tax Act, 1961.” That statement concerns TDS rates and thresholds; it does not mean withholding settles an individual’s final tax.

How does your tax regime and total income affect the final bill?

Your final result depends on the tax rules applicable to your return year, your regime and your total taxable income—not just dividend income or the TDS rate. For example, the Income Tax Department’s AY 2026-27 ITR-2 guidance lists these new-regime slabs:

Total income band (AY 2026-27 guidance) Rate
Up to ₹4 lakh Nil
Above ₹4 lakh to ₹8 lakh 5%
Above ₹8 lakh to ₹12 lakh 10%
Above ₹12 lakh to ₹16 lakh 15%
Above ₹16 lakh to ₹20 lakh 20%
Above ₹20 lakh to ₹24 lakh 25%
Above ₹24 lakh 30%

The same AY 2026-27 guidance states a section 87A rebate of ₹60,000 for eligible taxpayers under the new regime with total income up to ₹12 lakh. Eligibility and the year matter: do not use these assessment-year figures as a forecast for a later year or assume every taxpayer qualifies.

Where do I report dividend income in my ITR?

Report the gross dividend under “Income from other sources” in the return’s Schedule OS. The notified form distinguishes dividend categories, so select the category that matches the income and the form for your assessment year. Do not report only the net amount received after TDS.

Which ITR form should I use if I received dividends?

Receiving dividends alone does not decide the form. The Income Tax Department describes ITR-2 as applying to individuals, whether resident or non-resident, and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) whose income is not chargeable under business or profession. ITR-1 is available only to qualifying residents who meet its detailed conditions.

Form Who it may cover Important limits
ITR-1 Residents who satisfy the form’s eligibility rules The AY 2026-27 guidance lists exclusions including certain capital gains, unlisted equity holdings, foreign assets or foreign-source income, company-director status and total income over ₹50 lakh. Check the full current conditions.
ITR-2 Individuals and HUFs with income other than income chargeable under business or profession Use the current guidance to confirm the form fits your complete income and status.

If you have business or professional income, or fall into an exclusion or another special category, do not choose a form solely because you received dividends. Confirm your eligibility against the Income Tax Department’s guidance for the relevant assessment year.

When must you pay tax on dividends?

There is no single dividend-payment date that automatically serves as every investor’s deadline for paying their final tax. Keep separate the dividend’s payment or credit date, TDS, any applicable advance-tax instalments, the return-filing due date and any balance tax payable when filing. The official sources cited here establish the Act transition and withholding framework, but not one universal payment or filing date for every taxpayer category.

Check the current Income Tax Department portal for the due dates applicable to your taxpayer category and tax year. Do not assume that the date the dividend reaches your account is the deadline for paying your final personal tax.
