Apple TV+ is Apple’s subscription streaming service for Apple Originals. You watch it in the Apple TV app or at tv.apple.com; an Apple TV 4K box is optional, not required. In the United States, Apple currently lists the service at $14.99 per month after a seven-day trial. You can stream on Apple devices, Android, Windows PCs, compatible smart TVs and streaming devices, or a browser. Offline downloads work on supported personal devices, but not on televisions, streaming boxes, Apple TV hardware, or the web player.
What Apple TV+ is—and what it is not
Apple’s current pages generally call the subscription “Apple TV,” while many viewers still call it Apple TV+. It provides Apple Originals and other subscription programming through the Apple TV app. The app itself is broader than the subscription: it can also show third-party channels, rentals, and purchases. Those third-party subscriptions and transactional titles are not automatically included in an Apple TV subscription. Check the title’s listing before assuming it is part of your subscription. Apple explains the distinction on its official Apple TV service page.
Apple TV 4K is a separate hardware product. You do not need to buy it to subscribe or watch. A compatible television, streaming device, phone, tablet, computer, or browser can be enough.

These are different ways to obtain the same Apple TV service, not higher and lower streaming tiers. A trial, student route, device promotion, or bundle can change your effective cost without changing the underlying catalog or app.
Do I need an Apple TV 4K?
No. Apple’s own FAQ answers, “Do I need an Apple TV 4K? No, you don’t.” You can begin with a device you already own, such as an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows PC, supported Android device, compatible smart TV, or supported streaming device. You can also use a browser at tv.apple.com.
Apple TV 4K is useful when you want a dedicated living-room interface, but it is not a subscription requirement and it does not provide offline downloads. The box streams subscription content; it cannot store Apple TV subscription titles for travel.

Which devices support Apple TV?
Apple lists broad device categories, but “supported” does not mean every generation or regional variant works. App availability, features, and content rights can differ by model and country. Check the exact model in Apple’s Apple TV App User Guide and current compatibility information before buying hardware.

The platform names above come from Apple’s current service information; they are not a guarantee for every model year. A television can be from a listed manufacturer and still lack the required app, operating-system version, or regional support.
How to watch on a television, phone, computer, or browser
Smart TV or streaming device
- Confirm that your exact television or box appears in Apple’s current compatibility information.
- Open or install the Apple TV app on that device.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used for the subscription.
- Select an Apple TV title and start playback.
These devices are designed for streaming. If you need a flight or another connection-free viewing situation, prepare the download on a supported personal device instead.

iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Windows PC
- Open the Apple TV app, or use the supported web experience for streaming.
- Sign in and search for the show, movie, sports event, or other title.
- Start playback, or use the app’s download control when you want local viewing.
On a phone or tablet, the app is normally the most practical way to combine streaming and downloads. On a computer, Apple provides a download control for a movie or event and a More menu for a television episode.

Browser
- Go to tv.apple.com.
- Sign in with your Apple Account.
- Choose a title and select Play.
The browser is convenient on a computer you do not want to configure, but it is a streaming route only.
Can I watch Apple TV offline?
Yes, when the title and device support downloads. Apple’s current support article says you can download on supported personal devices, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows PC, and Vision Pro. The download is stored for playback in the Apple TV app on that device.
Apple explicitly says that Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, smart TVs, streaming devices, and tv.apple.com cannot download content from the Apple TV app. Those platforms stream only. Buying an Apple TV box therefore does not solve an offline-viewing need.
How to download shows and movies
iPhone or iPad
- Open the Apple TV app.
- Find the show, movie, sports event, or other downloadable title.
- Open the title or season and tap Download.
- When the download finishes, open Library > Downloaded to watch without an internet connection.
Mac or Windows PC
- Open the Apple TV app and locate the title.
- For a movie or event, select its download control. For a television episode, open the More menu and choose the download option.
- Open Library > Downloaded to find stored items.
Apple Vision Pro
Apple provides Vision Pro-specific download instructions in its support guidance. Use the Apple TV app on the headset and follow the title’s download control, then open the downloaded library for offline playback.

Download expiry, stream limits, and channel restrictions
Downloads are licenses for temporary offline use, not permanent copies. Apple says some subscription downloads expire 48 hours after playback begins or 30 days after the download, whichever comes first. Channel downloads can have different time limits. A title can therefore disappear from the downloaded library even when your subscription is still active.
Most Apple TV subscription content can stream on up to six devices simultaneously, according to Apple Support, although some titles allow fewer streams. Access through the Apple Music Student Plan is limited to one simultaneous device. The applicable limit can depend on the subscription route and the title, so an unexpected playback warning may reflect a concurrency rule rather than a device failure.

What changes by country or region?
Do not carry the U.S. price, trial, bundle, sports offering, or catalog into another market. Apple warns that services, channels, sports, app support, features, and content availability vary by country or region. A title visible in one storefront may be absent in another, and a promotion available in the United States may not appear elsewhere.
Set the correct country or region on Apple’s service page before subscribing. If you move or use a payment account from another market, confirm which storefront controls your subscription and downloads.

If you already own a compatible smart TV
Install the Apple TV app and stream directly. This avoids buying another box, but verify the exact model first. Keep an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or PC available if offline viewing matters.

If you travel frequently
Download titles to a supported personal device before leaving reliable internet access. Start playback while your subscription is valid and remember that the 48-hour-after-playback or 30-day-after-download limits can apply.
If you want a dedicated living-room interface
Apple TV 4K is one optional television device, alongside compatible smart TVs and other supported streaming platforms. Choose based on the hardware you already own and the app support for its exact model; do not buy it solely for downloads.
If you use a computer managed by work or school
The browser provides a straightforward streaming fallback. For downloads, use the Apple TV app on a supported Mac or Windows PC and confirm that local storage and account permissions allow the download.
Common problems and practical fixes
“The download button is missing”
- Check whether you are on a television, streaming device, Apple TV box, or browser; those platforms stream only.
- Try the Apple TV app on an iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows PC, or Vision Pro, where Apple documents downloads.
- Check the title itself. Channel and subscription rights can restrict downloads or impose separate limits.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account holding the subscription and that the title is available in your region.
“My download expired”
Review when you downloaded it and when playback began. Apple’s stated limits can be 30 days from download or 48 hours after playback starts, whichever comes first. If the title is still available, reconnect to the internet and download it again.
“My TV cannot find the Apple TV app”
Check the exact television or streaming-device model against Apple’s current compatibility information. Manufacturer and platform names alone do not guarantee support, and availability can vary by country.

Check the simultaneous-stream allowance for your subscription and title. Most Apple TV subscription content supports up to six concurrent devices, but some titles allow fewer, and Apple Music Student Plan access is limited to one device at a time.
