Apple TV recommendations are personalized mainly from what you watch. In the Apple TV app, Apple TV 4K users can see recommendation areas such as Genius Browse and For All of You, while the Home tab may also surface a new title or next episode from supported connected apps. Apple does not publish the ranking formula, feature weights, or an accuracy percentage, so you can understand the controls and results without assuming how the underlying algorithm works.
Watchlist is Apple’s save-for-later system. Adding a movie or show places it in Watchlist and in the relevant Continue Watching row. Viewing activity and these lists normally synchronize across devices signed in to the same Apple Account, unless you change the play-history setting or clear the history.
What Apple TV is actually recommending
The recommendations discussed here are features of the Apple TV app, not only the Apple TV+ subscription catalog. Depending on your device, country, region and connected services, the app can suggest Apple-owned catalog content and titles supplied through supported apps or channels. Apple’s consumer description is straightforward: “The Apple TV app uses what you watch to personalize your recommendations.” See Apple’s explanation of the feature at Personalize your experience.
That statement describes the input Apple confirms, not the complete technology. The published support material does not identify a recommendation model, disclose ranking weights, or report a measured accuracy or engagement statistic. Treat the surfaces below as user-facing behavior rather than a technical specification of Apple’s algorithm.
#1 Best Overall
- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
Genius Browse on Apple TV 4K
On Apple TV 4K, Genius Browse can suggest titles and can be narrowed using profiles, a TV-show or movie filter, and genres. Those controls change the context in which you browse; they do not expose a score explaining why one title ranks above another. Apple documents these options in Manage recommendations that appear in the Apple TV app.
For All of You
For All of You is designed for shared viewing. You select the household profiles to include, and Apple uses the individual taste and viewing history associated with those profiles to find recommendations intended for everyone. On Apple TV 4K, you can edit which profiles participate. A shared result therefore depends on the profiles selected, not simply on the account owner’s history.
Home-tab suggestions from connected apps
The Apple TV app’s Home tab can show a new title or the next episode from a supported connected app. “Supported” is important: Apple does not claim that every streaming service integrates with these rows. Continue Watching can likewise combine items from apps or channels connected to the Apple TV app, subject to device, service and regional support. Apple describes this behavior in Personalize the Home tab in the Apple TV app on iPhone.

| Surface | What it uses or shows | What you can control |
|---|---|---|
| Genius Browse | Suggested movies and shows in Apple TV 4K browsing | Profile, TV/movie filter and genre context |
| For All of You | Shared suggestions based on selected profiles’ tastes and viewing histories | Which household profiles are included |
| Home tab | New content or next episodes, including items from supported connected apps | Connected apps and the profile currently in use |
| Continue Watching | Titles you started, plus saved items and, when live, sports events | Remove an item or alter history settings |
How to add and remove items from Watchlist
Watchlist is a deliberate save-for-later list, separate from merely browsing a title. Apple presents saved movies and shows in both the Watchlist and Continue Watching rows. Live sports events can also appear in those rows while they are live. The exact labels can vary on third-party televisions and streaming devices.
On Apple TV 4K
- Open the Apple TV app and navigate to the movie or show page.
- Choose Add to Watchlist. The control may change to a checkmark after the item is saved.
- To remove it, open the item from Watchlist or Continue Watching and choose Remove from Watchlist. The item page also provides the add/checkmark control.
These Apple TV 4K actions are described in Find things to watch. Removing an item from a row removes it from the saved list; it does not erase every other record of having watched it.

- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
On iPhone or iPad
- In the Apple TV app, touch and hold the movie or show.
- Tap Add to Watchlist.
- Open the Watchlist or Continue Watching row to find the saved title. Use the item’s menu to remove it when you no longer want it saved.
Apple says Watchlist is available on several supported devices when you are signed in to the same Apple Account. Availability and menu wording can differ by country, region, operating system and device. The iPhone guidance is included in Personalize the Home tab in the Apple TV app on iPhone.
Why a saved title can appear in Continue Watching
Watchlist and Continue Watching are two views that can surface the same saved movie or show. Continue Watching can also contain a program you started but did not finish, whereas Watchlist expresses an intentional save-for-later action. A live sports event may appear in both rows while it is live. Do not assume that every Continue Watching entry was manually added to Watchlist.

By default, what you watch can affect personalized recommendations and Watchlist on devices signed in to the same Apple Account. The setting that governs this behavior is called Use Play History. Apple documents it on iPhone and iPad under Settings > Apps > TV; living-room devices expose the equivalent privacy control in the Apple TV app settings. See Change the Apple TV app settings on iPhone and iPad and Adjust Apple TV app privacy settings on a TV or living room device.
Turning off Use Play History
Turn off Use Play History when you do not want new viewing activity used for personalized recommendations and Watchlist behavior. On Apple TV 4K and other living-room devices, open the Apple TV app’s settings, choose the privacy or play-history section, and switch the option off. On iPhone or iPad, use Settings > Apps > TV and change the same setting. Labels and placement can change with software updates.
Disabling the setting is not the same as deleting existing records. It changes how subsequent activity is used; it does not promise to remove previously watched information or instantly rebuild every row.

Clearing Play History
Clear Play History is the destructive option. Apple says it removes synced information about what you watched from the Apple TV app on other devices. It also removes TV shows and movies from Continue Watching and Watchlist rows. That means clearing history is not a harmless way to “reset” recommendations: you lose visible progress and saved entries as well as the synced watched information. Apple’s living-room privacy instructions are at Adjust Apple TV app privacy settings on a TV or living room device.
| Action | Effect on new viewing activity | Effect on existing data and rows |
|---|---|---|
| Leave Use Play History on | Viewing can inform recommendations, Watchlist behavior and, where documented, Continue Watching | Normal synchronization continues for the same Apple Account |
| Turn Use Play History off | New viewing is not used for the documented personalization purpose | Existing watched information and saved rows are not described as automatically erased |
| Clear Play History | Removes the watched information Apple has synchronized | TV shows and movies are removed from Continue Watching and Watchlist rows |
Profiles and household privacy
Profiles keep recommendations and lists separate on supported televisions and streaming devices. Apple says each profile has its own Watchlist, video collections and recommendations; switching profiles refreshes the app for that profile. This is the practical way to prevent one person’s viewing from dominating another person’s suggestions.
For All of You still requires an explicit choice of profiles to include, so a household can keep individual profiles separate while creating a shared recommendation view. On supported setups, Apple also provides a four-digit profile passcode. A passcode helps stop another viewer from opening that profile’s watch history, recommendations and Watchlist. Details on profile navigation and availability appear in Use the sidebar to navigate the Apple TV app.
A sensible household setup
- Create or select a separate profile for each regular viewer.
- Switch to the active viewer’s profile before watching; otherwise the wrong history can influence that profile’s future suggestions.
- For a shared movie night, open For All of You and select only the profiles whose tastes should count.
- Use a profile passcode where other household members should not access a profile’s list or history.
Why recommendations or Watchlist items may look wrong
The wrong profile is active
Check the profile shown in the Apple TV app before judging the recommendations. A family member’s viewing can appear inexplicable when you are looking at that person’s profile, or when a shared For All of You view includes more profiles than intended.
A connected app is not supported
A title may be absent from a Home or Continue Watching row even though the service is installed on the television. Apple’s documentation qualifies these features as working with supported connected apps, and availability varies by app, device and region.

History was disabled
If Use Play History is off, recent viewing will not provide the documented personalization signal. Check the setting on the device where the behavior is most noticeable and confirm that all devices use the same Apple Account.
History was cleared
After Clear Play History, expect watched information to disappear across synchronized devices and expect movies or shows to leave Continue Watching and Watchlist rows. Re-adding a title to Watchlist is separate from restoring its previous watched progress.
The device or region has different menus
Apple repeatedly notes that features and content vary by country, region, device and supported app. Apple TV 4K instructions should not be treated as identical to instructions for an iPhone, smart television or other streaming device. If a label is missing, update the device software and consult the guide for that specific platform.
Using search without confusing it with recommendations
Apple’s search examples include phrases such as “popular dramas with a twist” and “animated movies good for the whole family.” These are natural-language search examples, not evidence that the recommendation system ranks titles using those exact concepts. Use search when you have a clear theme; use Genius Browse, For All of You or Home when you want the app to assemble options from viewing context.
What Apple does—and does not—tell you
Apple documents the observable controls: watch activity can personalize suggestions, selected profiles can produce shared recommendations, saved titles appear in Watchlist and Continue Watching, and history settings affect synchronization and visible rows. It does not document the internal ranking formula, the relative importance of genres versus completion, or a benchmark showing that one setting produces better recommendations than another. Consequently, there is no evidence-based “best” mode. Choose the mode that matches your privacy preference and household workflow, then use separate profiles and explicit Watchlist entries to keep the results understandable.
