Yes, the Nuki Keypad 2 NFC supports Apple Home Key, but unlocking by tapping a phone or watch without first unlocking it requires a compatible Nuki Smart Lock integrated with Apple Home through Matter and a supported home hub. If you do not have a hub, Nuki offers App Mode: it still allows a tap, but you must unlock your phone first. The keypad also supports fingerprint and access-code entry.
What the Keypad 2 NFC does—and what it needs
The Keypad 2 NFC is an accessory, not a standalone lock. It needs a compatible Nuki Smart Lock: Smart Lock Ultra, Smart Lock Pro (5th Generation), Smart Lock Go, or Smart Lock (4th Generation), with the latest firmware, according to Nuki’s current Smart Home Mode setup guidance. Compatibility and software requirements can change, so check Nuki’s current list before buying.
Its entry methods are not limited to a phone: the keypad accepts fingerprints and codes as well as NFC taps. Nuki says it can store up to 20 fingerprints and up to 200 time-limited access codes. Nuki documents two Tap to Unlock modes. Smart Home Mode integrates the lock with Apple Home or Samsung SmartThings and requires a compatible ecosystem hub that supports digital home keys. App Mode avoids the hub, but the phone must be unlocked before tapping. Nuki says the two modes cannot be used together. In Smart Home Mode, user permissions are managed in the smart-home app; Nuki says the phone and hub should be on the same Wi-Fi network during setup. Details are in its setup instructions.

Apple devices and hubs listed by Nuki
For Apple Home Key, Nuki lists iPhone XS or later with iOS 18.6 or later, and Apple Watch Series 4 or later with watchOS 11.6 or later. The listed Apple home hubs are Apple TV 4K (3rd generation, 128 GB), Apple TV 4K (2nd generation with Thread), HomePod (2nd generation), and HomePod mini. These are Nuki’s stated requirements; check the current compatibility guidance for changes before setup.
Samsung Smart Home Mode
Nuki’s setup guidance lists Android 14/U or later, current Samsung Wallet and SmartThings app versions, and a compatible Samsung or SmartThings hub. Named hub options include SmartThings Hub v3, SmartThings Station, Aeotec SmartThings Hub, and Aeotec SmartThings Hub 2. Check Nuki’s linked compatibility guidance for the specific phone and software you plan to use.

What happens if your phone battery runs out?
Nuki says Apple power reserve can keep Home Key available for up to five hours after an iPhone battery drains naturally, provided Express Mode is enabled. It does not work if the phone is switched off. Nuki App Mode has no power reserve. A fingerprint or access code offers another way to enter without relying on the phone; the five-hour statement is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent test.
Codes, fingerprints, battery life, and weather protection
Nuki lists capacity for up to 200 time-limited access codes and up to 20 fingerprints. Its product page also claims up to 12 months of maintenance-free operation and an IP54 rating for protection against dust and splashes or rain. These figures are vendor specifications; they do not establish independently measured battery life or weather performance.

Nuki’s March 24, 2026 US launch announcement says the keypad stores up to 35 Tap-to-Unlock keys. The product page accessed October 7, 2026 lists code and fingerprint capacity but does not state a tap-key capacity, so treat the 35-key figure as a launch-announcement specification. The announcement also says the keypad can be mounted with adhesive strips or screws and stores access data locally, with cloud use optional; these are manufacturer statements, not independently verified results. Nuki’s March 24, 2026 US launch announcement set a recommended retail price of $179 and said the keypad was available through Nuki’s online shop and Amazon at launch. That is launch-time US pricing, not a current quote. The Nuki product page accessed October 7, 2026 displayed €179 on a regional storefront; that price should not be treated as a price for other countries or as a live offer.

The official materials establish compatibility, access methods, and manufacturer-stated specifications. They do not establish that the lock is low-profile relative to other locks, nor do they provide independent results for installation time, reliability, operating noise, unlocking speed, or security. The available evidence therefore supports explaining how the keypad works, but not a hands-on performance verdict.
