Apple augmented reality (AR) places digital content in relation to the physical world, so virtual objects appear to belong in the person’s surroundings rather than simply sit on a screen. On iPhone and iPad, that commonly means a live camera view with virtual objects layered into the scene. On Vision Pro, Apple’s broader term is spatial computing: apps can place content around the user or create fully immersive experiences.
What does Apple mean by augmented reality?
Apple defines AR as an experience that adds two-dimensional or three-dimensional elements to a live view from a device’s sensors, making those elements appear to inhabit the real world. The defining feature is the relationship between digital content and the environment—not merely displaying graphics on a device. Apple’s ARKit documentation provides this definition.
For example, an app might show a virtual object positioned on a floor through an iPhone camera. The object is digital, but its placement is meant to make sense in the physical scene. Apple’s augmented reality design guidance describes camera-based AR as a common mobile form.
What is ARKit?
ARKit is Apple’s developer framework for building AR experiences. It combines capabilities such as motion tracking, world tracking, and scene understanding to help apps place and manage virtual content in relation to the surroundings. It is not a consumer headset or a single AR app; it is technology developers can use in their apps. See Apple’s ARKit documentation.

On iPhone and iPad, ARKit can support camera-based experiences in which digital objects are rendered over the live view. Apple advises developers to offer AR features only on devices that support ARKit. The precise capabilities available to an app depend on the device and software.
How is iPhone and iPad AR different from visionOS?
The main difference is how content is presented. Mobile AR commonly starts with a live camera view of the world and adds virtual objects to that view. In visionOS, the system places app content in the person’s surroundings; an app uses ARKit when it needs information about, or interaction with, those surroundings.

What does “spatial computing” mean for Apple Vision Pro?
Apple describes Vision Pro as a spatial-computing platform. Its visionOS overview says experiences can combine windows, three-dimensional content, and fully immersive scenes, allowing people either to remain connected to their surroundings or to enter a virtual environment. Apple’s wording is that “visionOS enables you to create ground-breaking spatial computing experiences that uniquely blend digital content with the physical world.” See the visionOS overview.

Spatial computing is therefore broader than camera-overlay AR. A window placed in the room or a 3D object anchored in the environment is AR-like; a fully immersive scene is a different kind of experience within Apple’s spatial-computing framing. Whether an experience is AR-like or immersive depends on how it presents content and the person’s connection to the physical surroundings.

Apple lists visionOS ARKit capabilities including plane detection, world tracking, hand tracking, scene reconstruction, image tracking, object tracking, barcode detection, room tracking, light estimation, camera frames, and accessory tracking. Depending on the app’s needs, these services can help it anchor content, recognize environmental features, or respond to hands and nearby objects. In visionOS, ARKit is not required for every app that displays content in a person’s surroundings. Apple describes it as the framework to use when an app needs data about, or interaction with, those surroundings.
