Anion detection can help police investigators characterize chemical evidence from suspected explosions or poisoned food and drink. In a laboratory, analysts separate negatively charged chemical species in a sample and interpret the resulting profile alongside reference materials and other evidence. A profile can generate investigative leads; it cannot, by itself, identify a perpetrator or prove how a substance was used.

What anion detection can show investigators

Anions are negatively charged chemical species. Forensic analysts can extract soluble chemicals from evidence and separate the anions in the extract. The resulting profile may help show which substances could be present and guide further testing or investigation.

The distinction between a profile and an identification matters: different materials can share anions, and a separation result alone does not necessarily identify a particular compound or its source. Analysts may compare results with reference substances or use supporting analytical techniques. The FBI’s 2001 article describes these methods as complementary aids to other forensic methods, not stand-alone proof. FBI Laboratory article, April 2001

How ion chromatography and capillary electrophoresis differ

Ion chromatography (IC) and capillary electrophoresis (CE) are laboratory separation methods that can be used to examine anion mixtures. They separate substances in different ways, and neither is a universal winner: the appropriate method depends on the ions of interest, evidence matrix, procedure validation and interpretive support.

Method How separation works Forensic consideration
Ion chromatography (IC) Separates ions chromatographically. Can complement CE when examining anion profiles. Suitability depends on the sample and the specific procedure.
Capillary electrophoresis (CE) Charged species migrate under an electric field. The FBI’s historical article discusses micro-sampling and automation benefits, but those observations do not establish a current universal advantage or casework standard.

For either method, analysts need to consider sample size and matrix, separation of the target ions, possible coelution or chemical transformation, available reference standards, and whether the procedure has been validated for its intended casework use.

Where anion analysis may help

Post-blast residue

After an explosion, laboratory analysis of residue may reveal a mixture of anions relevant to materials that could have been involved. Combinations in a profile may help distinguish possible residue patterns, but individual ions are not unique proof of a particular explosive, device or person. Interpretation depends on the evidence context and corroborating findings.

Suspected poison in food or drink

The FBI article also discussed developing a screening approach for poisonous anions in food and drink, including comparison of suspect samples with reference substances. It explicitly described this work as in progress, not as a finalized, validated operating procedure. It therefore should not be read as a current standard protocol or as proof that a screening result alone establishes poisoning.

Energetic-material residue in fingermarks

A 2013 study abstract reported detecting anionic energetic-material residues in enhanced fingermarks on paper and glass. The researchers considered factors including sweat, surface, enhancement technique and potential interferences. This is a reported study result, not evidence that every fingermark enhancement process preserves every residue or that the approach is routinely deployed in police casework. Strip Detective Infidelity Semen Detection Test Kit, Sperm Detection Test Strips for Semen Presence, At-Home Acid Phosphatase (AP) Test, 10 pcs
  • At-home infidelity test (2 min): Presumptive semen detection via initial detection of acid phosphatase (AP), a semen indicator – results in approximately 2 minutes.
  • Easy to use sperm detection test: Moisten the stain, apply the test strip, wait, and compare the colour to the colour guide on the package. An ideal infidelity test for home use.
  • Versatile semen presence test: The semen detection test detects the presence of semen on textiles, bedding, ceramics, and paper; also suitable for old or dried stains.
  • Forensic-style method (home screening): Inspired by forensic analysis (presumptive AP method); like any at-home semen presence test, a positive result requires laboratory confirmation.
  • Contents & discreet packaging: 10 test strips, a spray bottle (fill with water), and instructions for use – shipped in discreet packaging.

How a result fits into a police investigation

  1. Collect and preserve evidence: Investigators document and handle samples to reduce contamination and preserve material for analysis.
  2. Analyze with a fit-for-purpose method: A laboratory selects a separation approach appropriate to the sample and question, using a procedure validated for that purpose.
  3. Compare and interpret: Analysts assess the profile against suitable references and account for matrix effects and other analytical limitations.
  4. Corroborate: Investigators consider the result alongside other forensic findings and case evidence. A chemical profile alone does not establish who handled or used a substance.

Limits and safeguards

  • Shared ions limit attribution: A detected anion may occur in more than one material, so its presence does not uniquely identify a source or a person.
  • Samples can complicate separation: The FBI’s historical article discusses issues such as coelution and chemical transformations affected by solution conditions. These are examples of analytical challenges, not a complete account of current method performance.
  • Validation and contamination control are essential: The UK Forensic Science Regulator’s statutory code includes requirements concerning validation and the prevention, monitoring and detection of contamination. It is a UK framework, not a universal rule for every jurisdiction. UK Forensic Science Regulator statutory code, version 2
  • Historical research is not a current protocol: The FBI article was published in April 2001. Its food-adulteration methods were described as research in progress, not finalized validated procedures.
  • The cited methods are laboratory approaches: The cited sources describe analytical separations in laboratory settings; they do not establish a portable device or test strip as suitable for forensic conclusions.

What the evidence supports

Anion analysis can help characterize chemical residues and provide leads in investigations involving suspected explosions or poisoning. Its value depends on a validated method, suitable comparisons and careful interpretation alongside other evidence. Finding an anion is not the same as proving the source, the method of use or the identity of a person.
