Ancient South African rocks preserve clues to how phosphorus, ocean chemistry and oxygen changed together as Earth moved toward persistent oxygenation. A 2026 study argues that feedbacks among these factors may have made oxygen levels unstable—an Earth-history lesson that could help scientists interpret ocean-bearing worlds, but is not evidence of life beyond Earth.

Why scientists are revisiting the rise of oxygen

Oxygen did not simply appear in Earth’s atmosphere in one sudden event and then climb steadily. The Great Oxidation Episode was a prolonged first rise in atmospheric oxygen, spanning approximately 2.43 to 2.06 billion years ago, according to the 2026 study in Nature Communications. How oxygen persisted and changed after that rise began is part of the broader question of how Earth became habitable.

The study by Lewis J. Alcott, Benjamin J. W. Mills, Andrey Bekker, Zidong Peng and Simon W. Poulton examines the final two glaciations of this episode. Its central proposal is that phosphorus recycling, sulfate availability and changing ocean redox conditions interacted in feedbacks that could have contributed to instability in atmospheric oxygen. The authors do not directly measure ancient atmospheric oxygen; they interpret geological evidence alongside a biogeochemical model.

What the team examined

Rock evidence from South Africa

The researchers analyzed drill-core shale from the Rooihoogte and Timeball Hill formations in South Africa’s Transvaal Supergroup. The sampled formations date to about 2.32–2.25 billion years ago and record shallow-marine conditions connected to the ocean, including environmental change around post-glacial periods.

These rocks are not samples of seawater. They are a geological record from which scientists infer past conditions, so conclusions about the wider ocean and atmosphere depend on how well those records and models represent ancient Earth.

Separating phosphorus pools

The team measured redox-sensitive trace elements and used phosphorus phase partitioning to distinguish operationally defined iron-bound, authigenic, organic-bound and crystalline apatite phosphorus. They treated the first three pools—iron-bound, authigenic and organic-bound—as reactive phosphorus, an estimate of phosphorus that could have been available to biology.

This distinction matters because phosphorus can be present in a sediment without being readily available to organisms. As co-author and UC Riverside geologist Andrey Bekker put it, “We can now separate the phosphorus that was available to organisms from phosphorus that was essentially locked away.” The study also brought its rock observations together with existing sulfur-isotope and organic-carbon records and a biogeochemical model.

How phosphorus and oxygen may have influenced each other

Phosphorus is an essential nutrient. If more becomes available, it can support biological productivity; when organisms die and organic matter is buried, that burial can affect the balance of oxygen-producing and oxygen-consuming processes. The study proposes a dynamic sequence rather than a simple, one-way oxygen increase:

  1. Glacial retreat and weathering: Post-glacial weathering may have delivered phosphorus and sulfate to the ocean.
  2. More nutrient supply: Added phosphorus could have stimulated productivity and organic-carbon burial, supporting oxygen accumulation.
  3. Changing sulfate and redox conditions: As oxygenation promoted oxidative weathering and sulfate delivery, microbial sulfate reduction and shifts in ocean chemistry could affect how phosphorus was retained or recycled.
  4. Renewed biological activity: Where phosphorus returned to seawater, it could have supported further productivity and organic-carbon burial, reinforcing oxygen production. Later changes in these processes could weaken or alter the feedback.

UC Riverside’s explanation describes one part of the proposed cycle: microbes used sulfate while breaking down organic matter, releasing phosphorus back into seawater; the phosphorus could then support biological growth and, in turn, oxygen production. The full geological record and model make the story more complex than a single repeating loop. The authors’ emphasis is on interacting feedbacks and instability, not a claim that oxygen rose in a smooth or predictable line.

What the study establishes—and what it does not

  • Rock observations: The study reports phosphorus phases and redox-sensitive trace elements in the sampled South African rocks, alongside comparisons with existing sulfur-isotope and organic-carbon records.
  • Reconstruction: The proposed links between those records, whole-ocean phosphorus cycling and oxygen fluctuations are interpretations supported by biogeochemical modeling, not direct measurements of the ancient atmosphere.
  • Oxygen variability: The researchers argue that oxygen levels fluctuated more dramatically after the Great Oxidation Episode began than previously believed. The paper and institutional summary do not provide a single headline numerical estimate for the size of those fluctuations.
  • Early complex life: The reconstruction raises the possibility that oxygen was available for extended intervals. That implication suggests oxygen alone may not explain when organisms with more oxygen-dependent metabolisms appeared; it does not settle the timing or causes of complex life’s evolution.

Why this Earth history may matter for alien-world research

For astrobiologists, the value is a framework for interpreting chemistry, not a recipe for finding life. Earth’s history shows that nutrient availability, biological productivity, ocean conditions and oxygen can influence one another. A chemical observation—oxygen, for example—may be more informative when considered alongside the environment and other processes that could produce or consume it.

That perspective could help scientists decide what combinations of chemistry and context are worth investigating on ocean-bearing worlds. But this study analyzes ancient Earth rocks; it makes no direct measurements of exoplanets, Europa, Enceladus or any other world beyond Earth. It neither detects extraterrestrial life nor demonstrates that phosphorus cycles there in the same way. Bekker summarized the comparative value this way: “Earth’s history shows that oxygen, nutrients, and life evolved together. Understanding those connections gives us a more nuanced perspective on our own planet’s future and what we might look for on other planets.”
