Yes—one documented project adapted the radio and electronics from a tiny toy RC car to control a lightweight electric airplane. The builder added a rudder actuator and changed the motor switching circuit, creating a rudder-and-motor-controlled model rather than a conventional fully controlled aircraft. It was a highly customized historical experiment, not a plug-and-play recipe for mixing arbitrary car and aircraft parts.

What the RC car-to-plane project involved

Hackaday’s December 11, 2010 feature described a free-flight model converted to radio control with the transmitter and receiver from a small RC car. The builder cut the tail and reattached it with mylar hinges so it could move as a rudder. A coil-and-magnet actuator moved the rudder, while an upgraded motor provided speed control. Hackaday noted that roll and pitch control were not apparent in the build. Read Hackaday’s project feature.

The fuller account at RC-CAM describes a 2.5-ounce SkyRunner Free Fly model using electronics from the MicroSizer/BitChar-G class of miniature toy cars. The builder reported a historical total cost of about $35; neither that figure nor the named parts should be treated as a current price or recommendation. Read the RC-CAM build account.

How the electronics were adapted

The conversion depended on repurposing the car receiver’s outputs rather than connecting a standard airplane radio system. In the builder’s initial arrangement, one receiver output that had controlled the car’s motor drove the airplane’s rudder actuator. Another output switched the airplane motor through a power MOSFET/solid-state switching stage. The actuator used a hand-wound coil and a small permanent magnet to move the rudder. This arrangement was specific to the miniature receiver, actuator and airframe.

The airplane had rudder and motor control, but no elevator control in the builder’s initial description. That distinction matters: steering a model with a rudder is not the same as having independent control of pitch, roll and yaw. The sources describe this particular rudder-only arrangement; they do not establish that toy-car receivers generally have outputs, signal behavior or power capacity suitable for aircraft.

What the builder reported about flight and range

The initial model’s longest reported flight was under 30 seconds, and the builder said it slowly lost altitude despite making wide turns. Those are observations from one experimental build, not expected flight time or a performance benchmark for this type of conversion.

In a March 20, 2003 update, the builder documented replacing a heavier battery pack with a single LiPo cell and revising the rudder actuator to use two smaller coils. The account does not turn those changes into a general setup recommendation; airframe mass, motor, battery and control system all affect whether a particular model can fly safely.

RC-CAM also says the unmodified toy-car radio systems discussed there often had a range under about 25 feet. For this specific setup, the author reported extending the receiver antenna and increasing transmitter power, after which range rose from about 25 feet to over 200 feet. The account says the transmitter was no longer FCC approved after that modification, assuming it had been approved before. That historical result is not permission or advice to modify a transmitter: radio rules depend on location and equipment. The interference and signal-loss observations on the page concern those old toy-car systems, not modern aircraft radio links.

Is this a practical approach for a new RC plane?

The project is useful as an example of creative miniaturized electronics, but it does not show that car parts are a broadly compatible or reliable shortcut for building a plane. The historical model used a very light free-flight airframe and custom control electronics. A new builder should choose components for the aircraft’s mass, motor, battery and required control axes instead of assuming a toy-car receiver can operate aircraft components.

Approach What it means Evidence and trade-off
Toy-car electronics conversion Adapt a small car’s radio electronics to a miniature airframe, with custom actuator and motor circuitry. The RC-CAM account documents one rudder-and-motor-controlled build. It does not establish broad compatibility or provide a controlled comparison with modern systems.
Conventional scratch-built airplane Build an airframe from materials such as foam board, balsa or 3D-printed parts, and select an aircraft transmitter/receiver, motor, ESC, battery and servos to match the design. A current construction guide describes these materials and component categories, but does not compare their flight performance with the historical conversion. See the construction guide.

For a conventional electric airplane, a common wiring arrangement is battery to ESC, ESC to brushless motor, and the ESC signal lead to the receiver’s throttle channel; receiver outputs connect to servos. An ESC with a BEC can supply power to the receiver and servos. This is a different architecture from the old toy-car receiver and custom actuator circuit. See the wiring guide.

Ground checks and propeller safety

Before flying a new or repaired aircraft, the Academy of Model Aeronautics safety instruction quoted by the construction guide calls for a successful radio equipment ground-range check according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Treat the manufacturer’s procedure for the actual radio equipment as the operating reference.
