A Cheap Yellow Display (CYD), a small ESP32 touchscreen board, gives How-To Geek writer Adam Davidson a quick way to save music discovered on Spotify and Apple Music: it shows the current track’s artwork and details through Music Assistant, then lets him tap to add a promising song to a playlist. On a later listen, he can tap to add an album to his library. It’s a personal listening workflow, not evidence that the device improves a streaming service’s recommendations. [Adam Davidson’s How-To Geek article, syndicated by Yahoo Tech]
What the ESP32 touchscreen does
The project uses a CYD as a physical control for music discovery. Rather than identifying a song from ambient audio, the screen displays artwork and details for the track already playing through Music Assistant. A tap lets Davidson save a track he wants to revisit; he later listens again and adds selected albums to his library. [Adam Davidson’s account]
Davidson says he uses the routine with discovery playlists on Spotify and Apple Music. He describes the board as costing about $15, but that is an approximate figure from his account, not a guaranteed current price across sellers or dates. The article also does not specify an exact CYD revision, complete bill of materials, wiring, or firmware, so it is not a build guide.
How Music Assistant and Home Assistant fit in
Music Assistant is the music and library layer in the workflow. Its documentation describes a music library manager that can combine streaming services and personal files, and that runs on an always-on system. Its installation options include Home Assistant OS and Docker. These are requirements and options for the Music Assistant server, not for the separate touchscreen board. Home Assistant can connect to Music Assistant through an integration included in Home Assistant core. That integration makes Music Assistant players available to Home Assistant for dashboards, automations, scripts, announcements, and voice control. The account of the CYD project does not explain its touchscreen implementation in enough detail to establish that the screen connects through this integration. What to check for Spotify and Apple Music
The two services have different account and setup conditions in Music Assistant’s documented providers. These are integration details, not results from a controlled comparison of the services or the touchscreen workflow.

| Service | Documented conditions in Music Assistant | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify | A Spotify Premium account is required for the Spotify provider. [Spotify provider documentation] | The provider offers different playback-engine options, with different configuration requirements. Check the current setup instructions for the engine you plan to use. |
| Apple Music | A paid subscription is required. Music Assistant documents access to saved artists, albums, and playlists, catalogue search, and recommendation support. It cautions that playback through Music Assistant is not officially supported by Apple. [Apple Music provider documentation] | The documented authentication token expires; manual re-authentication is required after 180 days. Confirm the current provider guidance before relying on a particular function. |
Provider support and setup flows can change. Consult the linked official provider page for the current requirements before configuring an account.

What the project does—and does not—show
The useful idea is the low-friction capture step: while a discovery playlist is playing, a tap can collect a track for later attention instead of interrupting listening to navigate menus. Davidson’s account describes collecting roughly 10–20 songs and perhaps five new albums as part of his own routine; those figures are anecdotal, not typical results or measured performance. Nothing in the account demonstrates better recommendation quality, identifies songs by listening to audio, or establishes that the board talks directly to Spotify or Apple Music. It reports a personal interface built around the track information Music Assistant provides. To reproduce it, you would need the specific CYD configuration and implementation details that the article does not supply; verify board revision, display configuration, and firmware against the build instructions you choose. Music Assistant’s general ESP32 guidance concerns playback devices and does not establish that this CYD model supports those playback options. [Music Assistant ESP32 guidance]
