An experimental hydrogel can signal cocaine by turning clear: cocaine binds to aptamers linking the gel’s polymer chains, causing the gel to collapse and release or activate a color-changing readout. A 2010 research paper reported visual detection of as little as 20 ng within 10 minutes under the study’s conditions. That result describes a laboratory assay, not a validated consumer test.
How does a gel detect cocaine?
The gel uses aptamers—short nucleic-acid strands that bind a chosen target—as links holding polymer chains together. In the reported design, cocaine binding changes those links. The polymer network then collapses, producing a visible signal. The cocaine itself does not turn clear; the change in appearance comes from the gel’s readout system.
The 2010 paper describes two ways to make that collapse visible:
- Gold nanoparticle readout: Gold nanoparticles trapped in the gel escape as its structure collapses, leaving the mixture clear.
- Enzyme-and-dye readout: Enzymes released from the gel break down a blue amylose-and-iodine dye, making the mixture colorless.
The study is described in Zhi Zhu and colleagues’ paper, “An Aptamer Cross-Linked Hydrogel as a Colorimetric Platform for Visual Detection”, published in Angewandte Chemie International Edition in 2010. A contemporaneous explanation appeared in Chemistry World.

What performance did the researchers report?
Zhu and colleagues reported that their assay visually detected cocaine at amounts as low as 20 ng within 10 minutes. These are results from the reported study, not a guarantee for other samples, field conditions, or consumer use. The paper’s result does not by itself establish how the method would perform with real-world sample preparation, interfering substances, or routine handling.
Is this a practical cocaine test you can buy?
The cited paper describes a research platform, not a validated consumer product. Lab-on-a-chip integration and adapting the approach to other targets were presented as potential directions; the cited sources do not establish a currently available commercial version of this specific hydrogel or a consumer-ready test based on it.

Colin McCoy of Queen’s University Belfast told Chemistry World: “This system could be adapted to a huge range of small-molecule species, as long as suitable aptamers can be prepared for them.” That is a statement about potential adaptation, not evidence that the assay has been demonstrated for a wide range of substances.

The clear appearance is a visual indicator produced by the assay’s chemistry. It is not a standalone measurement of cocaine concentration: the reported result establishes a visual detection threshold under the researchers’ conditions, not a quantitative field result or a validated way to identify an unknown sample.
