A witch-hazel aphid can induce its host plant to grow a protective gall that shelters and feeds the aphid’s young. In one studied species, Hormaphis cornu, aphid gene variants are associated with changes in plant gene expression and gall color. “Hacking” is shorthand: the evidence does not show aphid DNA being inserted into the plant.
How does an aphid make a plant grow a nursery?
Hormaphis cornu aphids induce cone-shaped galls on witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana). A gall is new growth made from plant tissue, but its shape and development benefit the organism that induces it. In this case, the gall encloses the founding aphid and continues growing, providing food and protection for her offspring.
The aphid is not building a nursery from its own material. Instead, the interaction changes how the plant develops, producing a structure that serves as both shelter and a food source.
What does “hacking the plant’s genes” mean?
It refers to changes in which plant genes are active, or expressed—not a transfer of aphid genes into plant DNA. The 2021 study linked variants of an aphid gene called dgc (determinant of gall color) with differences in aphid salivary-gland dgc transcription, plant gene expression, and whether galls were red or green. The primary study presents an association among these findings, not proof that one aphid gene accounts for every change in the gall.

The proposed role of DGC
The study’s authors hypothesize that aphids inject DGC protein into the gall, where it changes the expression of some plant genes. That proposed pathway helps explain how an aphid might influence plant development, but it should not be treated as a fully demonstrated molecular mechanism.
Why gall color matters
Red pigmentation involves plant genes used in anthocyanin production. A 2023 review hosted by Oxford summarizes the green dgc allele as strongly expressed in aphid salivary glands and associated with repression of plant genes involved in making red pigment. This is useful context for the color association; it does not turn the proposed DGC mechanism into a settled one. The review discusses the findings in broader biological context.

How broad were the plant gene-expression changes?
In the 2021 study’s comparison of gall tissue with surrounding leaf tissue, approximately 31% of plant genes were upregulated and 34% were downregulated at a false-discovery rate (FDR) threshold of 0.05. These figures describe the study’s sampled tissues. They do not show that dgc alone caused all of those expression differences.

What this example does—and does not—show
- It shows a specific interaction: H. cornu aphids and witch hazel, not a universal explanation for how all aphids or gall-forming insects affect plants.
- It concerns gene expression: the findings link aphid variation with changes in plant activity, not the insertion of aphid DNA into the plant.
- It connects biology to a visible result: aphid dgc variants are associated with plant expression changes related to anthocyanin pigments and with red or green gall color.
- It leaves part of the mechanism open: the authors’ proposed delivery and action of DGC protein remains a hypothesis.
