Under the Alpenglow reward design described by a technical explainer, each qualifying vote reward is split evenly: half goes to the validator that voted, and half to the leader that certifies the vote. That is a proposed protocol mechanic, not proof that the feature is active on Solana mainnet. Anza’s feature-gate schedule, edited September 22, 2026, listed Alpenglow as pending testnet activation. Check the current schedule before treating the split as live behavior.
What does “half of every vote reward goes to the leader” mean?
The phrase describes a per-slot inflation reward divided between two parties: the validator whose vote is being rewarded and the leader that certifies that vote. The technical explainer says each receives half, with an odd residual lamport assigned to the voter. This is an account of the proposed implementation, rather than an owner-published statistic or independently verified current code behavior. Read the technical explainer.
It is not a promise that every validator receives the same amount. The voter’s own voting, the validator’s leader slots, whether votes are certified in time, and any applicable inflation commission all affect realized validator income. The 50/50 rule describes the allocation of a qualifying reward, not a fixed yield.

When does a vote qualify for a reward?
In the described flow, a vote is recognized for reward purposes when it appears in a reward certificate assembled by a later leader. The explainer says the leader eight slots after the voted slot builds certificates for that earlier slot, and that votes arriving too late can be left out. These are implementation-specific timing details and should be checked against the current code before relying on them.

That makes delivery and timing economically relevant: a vote that misses the certificate may not earn the described reward. The account also describes Alpenglow votes as signed messages sent between validators, rather than vote transactions. On that basis, the old per-vote transaction fee is removed from this path, while timely delivery becomes part of whether a vote is rewarded.
How does this differ from the legacy vote-reward path?
The key distinction is how a vote is submitted and how its reward is recognized. The Alpenglow description changes votes from transactions to validator messages and ties reward recognition to certificate inclusion. It does not, by itself, establish that one path produces higher validator or delegator returns.

What could the split mean for validators and delegators?
A validator’s described reward income combines the voter-side shares for its own qualifying votes with leader-side shares earned during its leader slots. The explainer also says inflation commission affects the validator’s reward income. Because leader opportunities are stake-weighted and vote certification depends on timely delivery, validators may realize different rewards even under the same allocation rule.

Delegators should not interpret the headline as a forecast that their returns will be cut in half or rise by a particular amount. The source provides no quantified yield estimate. The result for any delegation depends on the validator’s voting and leadership activity, successful certification, commission, and the cluster’s actual activation state.
What changes in epoch-credits accounting?
The technical explainer says that at migration the epoch-credits field changes from vote credits to reward lamports, with a sentinel row marking the transition. If that behavior is present in the deployed implementation, dashboards or tools that interpret the field as vote-credit counts could misread values across the migration boundary. This operational detail should be verified against the current migration and accounting code before changing monitoring or reporting workflows.

Is Alpenglow active on Solana mainnet?
The available rollout snapshot does not establish mainnet activation. Anza’s feature-gate schedule was edited September 22, 2026 and listed SIMD-0326 Alpenglow as pending testnet activation, with Agave v4.3.0 indicated. A schedule entry can change, and it does not prove the runtime state of a cluster at a later date. Confirm the current schedule and the deployed state of the specific cluster before describing these mechanics as live.
Anza documents a feature-gate process for deploying changes. Its feature-gate setup guide provides process context, but the activation status should be checked in the current tracker and cluster state.
