Allwinner’s early tablet success came from fitting its chips and business model to China’s white-box market: it combined ARM processing, graphics and video capabilities with application-specific power management, then worked through regional ODMs and OEMs that needed low-cost designs they could bring to market quickly. Its story is a historical case study, not evidence of Allwinner’s current market position.
What “fabless” meant for Allwinner’s tablet business
Allwinner was founded in Zhuhai in 2007 by senior engineers who had left Actions Semiconductor, according to EE Times. As a fabless chip company, it designed integrated circuits rather than operating its own wafer-fabrication plants. Its commercial focus was on white-box vendors and regional original design manufacturers (ODMs) and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), while Actions still had legacy MP3-player products.
That focus matched a part of the tablet market where customers cared about the finished device’s cost and time to market. Instead of relying only on a chip’s headline specifications, Allwinner built relationships with manufacturers that could use its designs in a variety of lower-cost products. The available historical reporting does not identify Allwinner’s fabrication partners or quantify its manufacturing costs, so those details should not be assumed.

Multimedia functions aligned with common tablet use
Allwinner identified web surfing, streaming and gaming as the core activities its tablet chips needed to support. Its application processors combined ARM CPU technology with graphics and video-decoding capabilities, drawing on the company’s experience in multimedia and analog/digital design. Allwinner vice president Francis Xue described its strengths as “Analog/digital technology, lower power management and multimedia capabilities.”

This combination gave device makers a chip platform aimed at several common tablet workloads rather than just general-purpose processing. That mattered in a price-sensitive product category: integrating key functions in the application processor could simplify the overall design, while power management was important to a portable device. The historical accounts explain the design emphasis but do not provide standardized power-consumption or cost comparisons against rival chips.
A companion power-management chip was part of the platform
Allwinner designed a separate power-management unit (PMU) to work with each application processor. Tailoring the companion PMU to a particular processor gave OEMs a matched combination of compute and power-management components, rather than asking them to select a generic power chip independently. The A31 family was described as supporting PowerVR graphics and 4K-by-2K video decoding; the A20 used a dual-core ARM Cortex-A7 CPU and Mali-400 GPU technology.
These examples show the breadth of Allwinner’s multimedia-oriented design work, but they are not a direct performance comparison: the A31 and A20 are different processor families, and the reported capabilities do not establish how every finished tablet performed.

Why A10-to-A20 continuity helped OEMs
The A20 was pin-compatible with the earlier A10, according to its product brief. Pin compatibility can let a manufacturer update or redesign a product without reworking as much of the circuit board around the processor. For an ODM or OEM managing multiple models and short design cycles, that can lower engineering effort and reduce the friction of moving to a newer chip.
Compatibility is not a promise that every A10 product could accept an A20 without changes: the product brief establishes pin compatibility, not universal software, board, firmware or thermal compatibility. The useful business point is narrower: continuity in the chip interface could make a design transition easier for manufacturers already working with the earlier platform.
How Allwinner’s channel strategy supported adoption
White-box manufacturers and regional ODMs often compete by assembling affordable products for varied markets and customers. Allwinner’s focus on those channels gave it access to companies looking for an application processor that paired multimedia features with relatively quick design-in. A chip that could be carried across related products, supported by a tailored PMU and integrated into the manufacturer’s existing design process offered value beyond its silicon specifications.

The approach also depended on an ecosystem. Xue said, “We don’t want to become a company that booms with one product and disappears. Instead, we want all of us — everyone in our industry including suppliers of parts and components and system vendors — to win.” That statement reflects the interdependence behind the model: processor designers, component suppliers and system vendors all needed viable businesses for a product platform to scale.
What the historical shipment figures show
EE Times reported 2012 estimates from Chinese semiconductor industry sources for tablet shipments and application-processor shipments. These are historical estimates, not audited Allwinner disclosures:

The figures indicate that Allwinner had substantial scale in the Chinese tablet-chip market during that period. They should not be read as a precise share of all Chinese tablets: one row counts tablet shipments and the others count application processors, and the source characterizes them as industry estimates.

A separate World Bank paper published in 2014 reported that Chinese design companies led by Rockchip and Allwinner captured 37% of key processor chips in non-iPad tablets, using period market data. That figure describes the combined strength of Chinese design companies in a specific tablet segment; it is not Allwinner’s individual share. The paper also connected the companies’ rise to China’s longer-term industrial-development policies, including subsidies and R&D support.

The historical material provides a few useful points of comparison, but not a full technical or commercial ranking. In the 2012 figures reported by EE Times, Allwinner’s application-processor shipment estimate exceeded those reported for Rockchip and VIA Technologies. The World Bank’s 2014 paper places Allwinner alongside Rockchip as a leader among Chinese design companies in non-iPad tablet processors. Neither source establishes that Allwinner was superior on every chip specification or in every market.
The documented differentiators are more specific: multimedia capabilities, ARM CPU and graphics integration, processor-specific companion PMUs, a pin-compatible A10-to-A20 path, and attention to white-box and regional ODM/OEM customers. The available evidence does not provide comparable prices, measured power consumption, video-decode tests, modem integration, software support, or design-in costs for Allwinner versus Rockchip, VIA, Actions Semiconductor, MediaTek or Intel’s later tablet offerings. Those categories matter for a rigorous vendor comparison, but assigning winners without comparable data would be misleading.

How Allwinner intended to extend the business
In the period covered by EE Times, Xue said Allwinner planned to pursue both combined baseband/application processors and standalone application processors, likely using licensed baseband intellectual property. He also described expansion beyond tablets into mobile Internet, home multimedia and television, and automotive products. Those statements document the company’s stated direction at the time; they do not establish which plans later shipped or what products are available today.
The historical sources establish neither current market share nor current availability of the A10, A20 or A31. Anyone evaluating an Allwinner chip or development board now should verify its current status, documentation and support directly rather than treating its early tablet success as evidence of present-day supply.
