A 2026 Nature Chemistry paper reports a way to join alkyl carboxylic acids and alkyl boronic acids through radical–radical cross-coupling, forming an alkyl–alkyl carbon–carbon bond. Its central design combines redox-matched alternating-polarity electrolysis with controlled activation of redox-active species. The method addresses a key selectivity challenge: bringing together transient radicals generated from two different precursor classes.

What the reported reaction does

The principal reaction couples an alkyl carboxylic acid with an alkyl boronic acid to form a new carbon–carbon bond between their alkyl fragments. The authors describe it as a direct radical–radical cross-coupling. The published article appeared in Nature Chemistry on 5 October 2026; its publication history lists receipt on 29 July 2025 and acceptance on 28 July 2026.

This scope matters: the abstract identifies alkyl boronic acids as the boron partners. It does not establish a general reaction for every class of organoboron compound.

Why coupling two transient radicals is challenging

Radical cross-coupling must control which reactive fragments meet and form a bond. The paper frames its problem as selectively coupling transient radicals made from two distinct precursor classes. That differs from approaches based on pairing a persistent radical with a transient one: when both partners are transient, their generation and availability must be managed so that the desired cross-coupling can compete with other outcomes.

#1 Best Overall

The article’s abstract identifies this challenge and the strategy used to address it, but does not provide enough detail for a quantitative comparison with photoredox, metallaphotoredox, or other electrochemical methods.

What alternating-polarity electrolysis contributes

The authors’ enabling platform combines two features: redox-matched alternating-polarity electrolysis and controlled activation of redox-active species. In the abstract’s formulation, this integrated design enables the coupling of alkyl carboxylic acids with alkyl boronic acids.

Rank #2

In broad terms, the approach coordinates electrochemical redox events with activation of the reaction partners. The available abstract does not specify electrode settings, electrolyte, solvent, current, timing, or a complete mechanistic sequence. Those practical and mechanistic details should be taken from the article and its Supplementary Information, rather than inferred from the platform description.

Reported reaction extensions

Beyond the principal cross-coupling, the authors report several related transformation classes:

  • Homocoupling: reactions that join partners of the same class.
  • Acid–alkene coupling: a net coupling route that uses in situ alkene hydroboration.
  • Tandem diversification: processes combined with Suzuki coupling or Buchwald–Hartwig amination.

These are reported as extensions in the article abstract. The accessible abstract does not establish individual yields, substrate counts, or the precise scope and limitations of each extension.

What the publication establishes—and what requires the supporting data

The 2026 journal article is the current version of record. A working-paper record was posted on 16 January 2025 and was labeled at the time as an early or alternative research output that had not been peer reviewed by Cambridge University Press. For current findings, use the journal publication rather than treating that earlier record as the final paper.

The article and Supplementary Information provide the appropriate sources for experimental procedures, compound characterization, NMR spectra, yields, substrate scope, and limitations. The article page also describes source data and presents proposed mechanistic and cyclic-voltammetry material. The abstract alone does not support claims about numerical scope, practical scalability, cost, environmental impact, or superiority to other methods.
