In an October 31, 2016 announcement at TU-Automotive Europe in Munich, HARMAN and Airbiquity described a connected-vehicle intrusion detection system that paired HARMAN’s in-vehicle monitoring with Airbiquity’s cloud services. The vehicle was to detect and log intrusions locally; the cloud platform would collect and aggregate that information, then support alerts, reports, and customer-directed responses. The announcement described the proposed capabilities, not independently verified results or current product availability.
What the HARMAN–Airbiquity system was designed to do
The two companies presented the system as an end-to-end workflow: monitor vehicle networks, record suspected intrusions, send the data to cloud services, and give automotive customers information and tools for responding. Its two components handled different parts of that process.
| Layer | Component | Role described in the announcement |
|---|---|---|
| In the vehicle | HARMAN ECUSHIELD | Continuously monitor internal vehicle networks and detect and log security intrusions locally. |
| In the cloud | Airbiquity Choreo service delivery platform and Software & Data Management offering | Collect and aggregate vehicle information, and automate alerts and reports for automotive customers. |
The announcement said customers could use those alerts and reports to assess threats and take security-focused action. It also described secure transmission and installation of software updates from the cloud as a way to mitigate future threats and restore affected systems or components. That was a stated capability; the release did not document a successful remediation or measure its security impact. HARMAN and Airbiquity’s October 31, 2016 announcement is the source for the described architecture and workflow.

- Monitor locally: ECUSHIELD watches internal vehicle networks for security intrusions.
- Record detections: The in-vehicle software logs detected activity.
- Send and aggregate information: Airbiquity’s Choreo platform and Software & Data Management offering collect vehicle data and aggregate it in the cloud.
- Alert customer teams: The cloud service automates alerts and reports so automotive customers can assess threats and decide on a response.
- Use updates as a response option: The companies described secure cloud delivery and installation of software updates to address future threats or restore impacted systems and components.
This division places initial monitoring and logging in the vehicle, while cloud services support fleet-level information handling and response workflows. The announcement does not specify technical details such as detection rules, alert thresholds, update approval procedures, or how the system handles a failed or interrupted update.

- 5GHz Wi-Fi & App Integration: Share videos easily via Wi-Fi using the mobile app for both iOS and Android devices. This feature allows for quick video downloads and sharing on your preferred platforms.
What the announcement does—and does not—establish
The announcement establishes what the companies said they were combining in 2016. It does not provide an independently measured evaluation, intrusion-detection accuracy, incident-rate change, deployment count, or evidence that the update process successfully restored affected vehicles. It also does not establish which vehicles used the joint system or whether either component remains available today.
HARMAN’s release called the offering the “first end-to-end IDS solution” of its kind, quoting HARMAN Vice President of Automotive Cyber Security Saar Dickman. That is the company’s characterization in the announcement, not an independently verified industry-wide comparison. The release’s company background also said that more than 25 million automobiles on the road were equipped with HARMAN audio and connected-car systems; that figure referred to HARMAN systems generally, not this intrusion detection system.

- FEATURES WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY INCLUDED: Experience peace of mind with this front and rear car dash cam. It comes with a free 128GB microSD card and offers advanced features such as an f1.5 aperture, motion detection, G-sensor, seamless loop recording, emergency video lock, screen saver, live speed and compass direction, voice guidance, ring of threads for optional CPL filter, a built-in supercapacitor for extended product life, support for up to 1TB microSD cards, and many more.
Why the partnership mattered to connected-car security
Connected vehicles need security capabilities that span both the car and services that receive information from it. The partnership’s stated design joined embedded monitoring with cloud data management so that local detections could inform customer response workflows. The announcement is useful as a snapshot of that approach, but it should not be read as proof of deployment, effectiveness, or present-day availability.
