An AI voice agent connects live audio to conversational reasoning and software actions. It listens, decides what the speaker means, may use tools or business systems, and replies aloud. The pieces that make this work include audio transport, turn detection, conversation state, permissions, and playback—not just a language model that can speak.
What happens during a voice-agent interaction?
A typical exchange moves through several jobs. Some systems make each job a separate stage; others handle incoming and outgoing speech in one realtime session.
- Capture and transport audio. A browser, phone, or embedded device captures the speaker’s voice and sends it to the agent. The system also needs a way to carry the agent’s audio back to the listener.
- Detect the end of a turn. The agent estimates whether the speaker has finished. It might use voice activity detection (VAD), which detects speech and silence, or semantic turn detection, which uses context to judge whether a pause means the person is done.
- Interpret the speech. In a chained pipeline, automatic speech recognition (ASR), also called speech-to-text, converts the audio into text. In a speech-to-speech session, the model can accept audio directly; a separate transcript need not be part of its reasoning path. A transcript may still be produced for display, inspection, policy checks, or records.
- Reason and decide what to do. The agent combines the current turn with its instructions and the conversation so far. It can formulate a reply or choose to call a function or connected service—for example, to look up information or carry out a workflow.
- Generate and play the reply. A chained system sends response text to text-to-speech (TTS). A speech-to-speech system can generate audio within the same session. The client plays the result, while the system keeps track of what was actually heard.
These jobs form a connected application, not an autonomous model with unrestricted access. The application should control permissions and business records, and any spoken confirmation should reflect the action’s actual result.

Which voice-agent architecture should you choose?
There are three useful patterns. They are design choices, not a universal ranking of quality or speed.

| Architecture | How it works | Best fit | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chained voice pipeline | Speech-to-text → agent workflow and tools → text-to-speech | When you need to inspect or transform intermediate text, swap components independently, or add explicit checks between stages | More visible control, with more stages and handoffs to manage |
| Speech-to-speech realtime session | A multimodal model handles audio input and spoken output in one session, with tools and session state | When natural turn-taking, interruption, and low delay before the first audio are central | Fewer exposed text stages; the application still manages tools, permissions, transport, and evaluation |
| Live voice with a delegated backend | A live spoken interaction delegates reasoning or tool work to a separate backend | When you already have a text-based workflow or want to choose its backend independently | Adds a boundary between the live voice layer and backend work |
The practical decision is what you need to control: intermediate text and checks, a speech-native interaction loop, or reuse of an existing backend. A speech-to-speech session does not remove the need to manage tools and application rules.
Why turn detection and interruptions are difficult
A pause does not always mean a person has finished. Someone might be thinking, reading out a number, or speaking in a second language. A silence-based detector can respond too early; a more patient threshold can make the conversation feel sluggish. Semantic turn detection can help interpret pauses in context, but noise can still trigger false detections.

Interruption, often called barge-in, adds another coordination problem. If a caller speaks while the agent is talking, the client should stop queued playback and the conversation state should match what the caller actually heard. Otherwise, the system may treat unplayed words as part of the conversation and make a later response confusing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSome applications check generated speech before playing it. That check can add buffering and delay. The system also needs to handle checks that fail, time out, or finish after playback has been canceled. A late result should not restart canceled audio, and blocked speech should not remain queued to play.

What makes a voice agent feel realtime?
Realtime performance is an end-to-end property. A fast model alone cannot guarantee a quick, natural exchange. The caller experiences the effects of connection setup, network round-trip time, jitter, packet loss, model processing, tool response time, buffering, and client playback.
Streaming can let processing begin before the speaker finishes, rather than waiting for a complete recording. But the experience still depends on how the system detects turns, how quickly any tool responds, and how smoothly it starts or cancels playback. There is no single latency target that applies to every agent and channel.

Measure time to first useful audio and latency at individual stages, then judge those numbers alongside task success and interruption behavior. In repeated evaluations, keep the caller recording, model configuration, tools, and transport consistent. Save relevant audio, events, tool results, and application state so you can assess whether the intended task really completed—not only whether the reply sounded convincing. Listen for unwanted silence, overlap, response timing, and whether the agent yields when interrupted.

Browser sessions
WebRTC is commonly used to carry microphone input and model output as media streams in browser-first implementations. It standardizes connection negotiation, encrypted media transport, codec selection, quality control, and buffering. A browser implementation also needs session events and a clear division of responsibility between the client and server.

Server-side and custom media workflows
WebSocket can suit a server-side workflow or custom media pipeline. It gives the application more direct responsibility for capturing or receiving audio, playback, cancellation, and truncation. If a browser SDK is involved, check where its tools run: a tool called from the browser is not automatically a private server operation. Keep sensitive actions, business rules, and permissions on trusted application infrastructure.
Phone calls
A phone agent needs telephony integration for call routing and media transport; keypad tones (DTMF) can support menu choices or numeric input. SIP is relevant to phone connections. SDK documentation may provide a provider-specific integration path—for example, the OpenAI Agents SDK documentation names a Twilio integration option—but the right provider depends on geography, call requirements, transport, reliability, and integration needs.
How to evaluate a voice agent beyond its demo
A demo can show that a system produces fluent speech, but fluency does not establish that it handled the caller’s intent or completed an action correctly. Evaluate the spoken interaction and the underlying application result together.
Recommended Free Tools
- Repeat representative scenarios with consistent recordings, configuration, tools, and transport.
- Inspect stage latency as well as time to first useful audio; examine the tool response time when an action is involved.
- Test pauses, background noise, spoken numbers, and interruptions to see whether turn detection and playback behave as intended.
- Compare the agent’s spoken confirmation with the actual result returned by the tool or business system.
- Review audio, event logs, tool results, and application state to diagnose failures rather than relying on the transcript or the agent’s account alone.
The key distinction is between a response that sounds plausible and a workflow that actually succeeded. The application’s returned result—not the wording of the spoken confirmation—is the evidence that an action completed.
