To connect an AI travel planner to live flight, hotel and weather data, run each data provider behind an MCP server, let the assistant discover and call typed tools on those servers, and keep any booking as a separate step the traveler approves. MCP standardizes how the assistant finds and invokes those capabilities. It does not supply flight inventory, hotel rooms, forecasts, maps or booking authority. Those come from the connected servers and the providers behind them.

What MCP standardizes and what it leaves to providers

The Model Context Protocol documentation defines the server side this way: “MCP servers are programs that expose specific capabilities to AI applications through standardized protocol interfaces.” MCP is therefore a contract for discovery and invocation. Each layer in a travel integration has a different job, and most integration mistakes come from assigning one layer’s responsibility to another.

Layer What it does What it does not do
Model Context Protocol Defines how an AI application discovers server capabilities (tools/list) and invokes them (tools/call) Hold inventory, guarantee freshness, or complete a booking on its own
MCP server Exposes tools (callable operations) and resources (read-only context) Create data it does not receive from its backend
Underlying provider Owns the flight, hotel, weather, place or route data, plus its authentication, coverage and transaction rules Get replaced by MCP; its schema, terms and availability still govern results
Your assistant and backend Structures traveler constraints, calls tools, checks results, and asks for approval Present model output as a live price or confirmed availability

Tools and resources are different kinds of access

MCP servers expose two kinds of capability that matter for travel planning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Tools are operations the model can call, such as a flight search, a hotel search, a route lookup or a booking handoff.
  • Resources are read-only information supplied as context, such as calendar availability, saved traveler preferences or a previous itinerary.

Keep the two apart in your design. A resource read should change nothing, while a tool that searches or books should be validated and, where it has consequences, gated. The MCP documentation’s multi-server travel example shows the split: a travel server for flights, hotels and itineraries, a weather server, and a calendar/email server. The workflow reads calendar and preference context, checks weather, searches flights, and then may book a hotel, create a calendar event or send an email, requesting user approval where necessary. Treat this as an illustrative architecture. It does not mean every deployment has those tools, or that MCP itself carries out a booking.

The request, stage by stage

A complete planning request passes through eight stages. Each stage consumes structured output from the one before it, so the order below is also the order in which to build and test.

1. Turn the request into structured constraints

Expedia Group’s developer page uses this traveler request as an example: “Find 3-star hotels in Paris under $200 per night for May 10-15.” Written as fields, it becomes something a provider can query:

Field Value Handling
Destination Paris, France Use city plus country. “Paris” alone can refer to more than one place.
Check-in 10 May 2027 The request gives no year. As of 9 October 2026, the next May 10 falls in 2027. Confirm the traveler’s intended year before querying.
Check-out 15 May 2027 Five nights. Store as a date pair, not as the phrase “May 10-15”.
Hotel class 3 stars Map to the provider’s star-rating filter, if it offers one.
Maximum nightly rate 200 USD The request uses “$”. Store the currency code explicitly, and confirm whether the provider’s price includes taxes and fees before you filter on it.

Keep these fields in the backend, not only in the prompt, so every later stage reads the same values. When a field is missing or ambiguous, ask a follow-up question rather than letting the model fill the gap.

2. Load only the context the request needs

Read the resources that bear on the trip: calendar availability, saved preferences and past itineraries. Pass only what the search requires. For a May stay, that means the date window and the relevant preference fields, not the traveler’s full calendar. A failed read of a read-only resource should narrow the search, for example by dropping a calendar constraint, and the narrowing should be visible to the traveler rather than silent.

3. Discover and call data tools

Discovery comes before invocation. Google’s Travel Impact Model documentation describes the two MCP methods used here: tools/list to discover what a server offers, and tools/call to execute a tool. Its endpoint is https://travelimpactmodel.googleapis.com/mcp. Requests are JSON-RPC 2.0 POST requests, and the API requires a valid Google Cloud API key with the Travel Impact Model API enabled.

  1. Enable the Travel Impact Model API in the Google Cloud project that will own the key, then create a Google Cloud API key for that project.
  2. Send a JSON-RPC 2.0 POST request with the method tools/list to the endpoint.
  3. Read each tool’s name and input schema. Build arguments only from fields that the schema defines.
  4. Send tools/call with the chosen tool name and its arguments.
  5. Validate the response before passing it to the model. Flag responses with missing required fields rather than repairing them with guesses.

Expect schemas to differ between providers. A flight tool, a place search and a weather tool will not share field names, date formats or identifiers. The adapter layer in your backend should normalize them into one internal shape while keeping each provider’s original values for traceability.

4. Ground and validate results

Grounding means tying every recommendation to an identifier, a location and a timestamp that a provider returned. Google’s Maps Grounding Lite MCP shows the pattern. Google describes it as a managed, Google-hosted server whose tools search places and return summaries with Place IDs, coordinates and Maps links; retrieve current weather and forecasts; and compute driving or walking routes with distance and duration. Access can use an API key or OAuth. Confirm current service requirements and terms before launch.

Google’s guidance for this server translates into four rules for an itinerary agent:

  • Use precise locations. A city plus country is safer than a bare city name.
  • Decompose generic requests. “Good places to eat near the hotel” becomes specific place searches by category and area.
  • Discover broadly, then fetch detail. When the request is uncertain, search first, then ask a follow-up about the place the traveler selects.
  • Never invent Place IDs. Use only the IDs the search tool returned.

Bad location resolution spreads. A wrong city produces the wrong venues, a forecast for the wrong place, and a route calculated between the wrong points. Check each result’s currency against its use: a forecast for a trip next week and a historical emissions figure carry very different freshness requirements.

5. Synthesize options against the traveler’s constraints

Compare options on the axes the traveler cares about: schedule, total price and included fees when the provider supplies them, location, length of stay, weather, accessibility or stated preferences, and cancellation or booking conditions where the data carries them. Where a provider does not return a value, show “not stated” rather than estimating it.

The sample projects described below assemble flight, hotel, weather and itinerary results into one plan. They demonstrate the assembly step, not universal inventory. Their descriptions do not show that any given route, city or hotel market is covered.

6. Show provenance, uncertainty and the next action

Separate what the provider returned from what the model recommends. A useful interface labels each figure with its origin and retrieval time, for example “Hotel rate: provider response, taxes not included” versus “Suggested for you: the quieter neighborhood, based on your stated preference.” Put the uncertainty next to the number it qualifies, not in a footer.

One public sample makes this explicit. Its README warns that its AviationStack flight data does not guarantee live ticket prices, and it treats fare information as planning guidance. Adopt the same discipline: an indicative fare is a planning estimate until a provider confirms availability and price at the point of purchase.

7. Keep consequential actions behind approval

Searching is read-only. Booking, sending messages and writing calendar events are not. For a booking, use this sequence:

  1. Show the traveler the option with its price basis, the fees it includes, and the cancellation terms the provider returned.
  2. Record explicit approval for that specific option. Approval of a search does not carry over to a booking.
  3. Either call the provider’s booking tool, or return a provider-hosted URL so the traveler completes payment and ticketing with the partner.
  4. Store the confirmation or reference the provider returns, and show the booking as pending until the provider confirms it.

The hosted-URL pattern is described in a public sample project, where the traveler completes payment and ticketing on the partner’s page. That sample documents its own design; it does not independently confirm partner program terms. If your product earns commission from partner links, check the program’s current terms and disclose the arrangement to users.

8. Handle failure and persistence deliberately

A provider error, timeout or incomplete response should become an explicit unavailable or partial result. The model should not fill the gap with a plausible hotel or fare. Build these branches:

  • Error in one domain: report that flights could not be searched, keep the hotel and weather results, and offer a retry rather than a substitute.
  • Partial response: label which fields are missing and which options are incomplete.
  • Missing Place ID or coordinates: stop that branch and ask the traveler to choose from the search results.
  • Changed tool schema: rerun tools/list, rebuild the arguments, and fail closed if a required field has disappeared.
  • Stale or untimestamped data: display its age, or leave it out of the recommendation.

Persistence determines whether a workflow can resume after a failure. The LangGraph/FastAPI sample stores workflow checkpoints in PostgreSQL, which allows a failed stage to be resumed rather than the whole plan rerun. That is one implementation choice, not an MCP requirement.

Real implementations to study

Google Travel Impact Model API

This endpoint provides emissions calculations, not flight search or booking. Its listed tools calculate detailed emissions for upcoming flights, typical emissions between airport pairs, and emissions for historical flights for Scope 3 reporting. It is a useful model for adding one domain-specific travel capability alongside a larger assistant. Each tool’s exact inputs come from tools/list, and the flight details you must supply depend on that schema.

Google Maps Grounding Lite MCP

This managed server covers places, weather and routes, as described in stage 4. Its outputs carry identifiers and coordinates your backend can reference later, which makes it a good model for read-only grounding. Google’s published description does not spell out regional coverage for each tool, so test the regions you serve.

LangGraph/FastAPI sample project

This public example runs sequential stages for flights, hotels, weather, itinerary and a final response. It connects to AviationStack for flights, Tavily, and a custom OpenWeather MCP server for weather, and persists checkpoints in PostgreSQL. Use it to study orchestration and output limits. It is not proof of provider accuracy, production readiness or coverage.

Amadeus-based booking handoff sample project

This public project describes Amadeus search for flights and hotels, Open-Meteo for weather, and hosted booking URLs for Aviasales, Hotellook and RentalCars, with Travelpayouts attribution. Its README describes the design only. Before adopting any part of it, verify provider access, geographic coverage, credentials, commercial terms and affiliate-program status directly with each party.

Provider-readiness checks before you build

  • Interface: Confirm the endpoint, transport and methods. For the Travel Impact Model, that means JSON-RPC 2.0 over POST, with tools/list and tools/call.
  • Authentication: Identify whether the provider uses an API key, OAuth or both, and what must be enabled in your account before the first call.
  • Coverage: Record the geographies, inventory types and cities or airports the provider covers. Note whether each result is search context, an offer, or bookable inventory.
  • Freshness and certainty: Find out how often the data updates, whether each result carries a timestamp, and whether availability or price is guaranteed at the point of search.
  • Terms: Check whether you may display, store or redistribute results, and whether partner or affiliate access is open to your business.
  • Error behavior: Read the documented error responses so the failure branches in stage 8 match real provider behavior.
  • Expedia Group: Its developer page says it is building MCP capabilities to connect agents with travel services and APIs, and describes its AI work as exploratory while inviting partner contact. Confirm with Expedia Group directly whether access is available before you plan around it.

What this article does not establish

  • No market size, adoption rate or performance statistic is offered. The public sources reviewed do not support one.
  • No accuracy, latency or coverage benchmark is claimed for any provider. The sample projects are public repositories, not production benchmarks.
  • No live prices or booking flows are shown. Provider behavior changes, so check each provider’s current documentation on the day you build.

The Bottom Line

Build in this order. Start with read-only lookups such as weather and place search, where the schemas and terms are clearest. Add flight and hotel search only after results show timestamps, partial-result handling and visible uncertainty labels. Add any booking handoff last, behind explicit per-option approval and after you have confirmed partner program terms.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
