AI-powered learning platforms are changing the mix of work L&D teams do—not demonstrating that the function is being replaced. They can assist with repeatable learning processes, content support, personalization, skills tracking, and related tasks. L&D professionals still need to decide which capabilities matter to the business, fit learning to employees’ roles, and assess whether it is making a difference.

What AI-powered learning platforms can do for L&D

Gartner’s Market Guide for Corporate Learning Technologies, published May 6, 2024, describes organizations as starting to use AI and generative AI to streamline manual learning work and experimenting with or adopting capabilities such as:

  • Supporting learning-content creation.
  • Personalizing learning and adapting it to learner needs.
  • Providing coaching and career-development support.
  • Managing skills-related information, tracking it, and collecting data in learning management systems (LMSs) and learning experience platforms (LXPs).

These are areas of market activity, not proof that every organization has implemented them or that all platforms perform them well. The guide’s public abstract does not establish a particular effect on learning outcomes, productivity, or L&D team size.

How the work of L&D teams is shifting

When software assists with content and administration, L&D can put more attention on the decisions around learning: which skills are important, who needs to develop them, how training fits a role, and how progress connects to business priorities. This is a practical interpretation of the capabilities Gartner describes alongside the priorities reported by L&D professionals; it is not a measured causal result of adopting AI platforms.

From producing and organizing learning to setting direction

LinkedIn Learning’s 2024 Workplace Learning Report identified five leading L&D priorities: aligning learning programs with business goals, upskilling employees, creating a learning culture, supporting career development, and improving retention. These priorities make the human work more than selecting or generating content. Teams must determine what is relevant, coordinate with business leaders, and shape learning around actual roles and career paths.

From delivering a course to fitting learning into work

AI training and other learning need to connect to the tools, processes, roles, and governance employees encounter on the job. A UK Government report on AI skills for the UK workforce recommends integrating training with existing systems and ways of working, designing for inclusion and scale, and keeping learning current as AI changes. This calls for organizational choices about access, relevance, and oversight—not just a platform setting.

From activity reporting to evidence of application

Completion counts can show that people finished a course, but not whether they gained a skill or used it. LinkedIn Learning’s 2024 report describes L&D leaders’ growing focus on analytics and business-impact measures. Among its respondents, 36% said their organizations tracked learning’s business impact through performance reviews, 34% through employee productivity, and 31% through employee retention. These are survey findings about reported measurement practices, not proof that learning—or AI—caused those outcomes.

As a practical measurement approach, track skill development and application in the work setting alongside relevant business measures. Choose measures that match the learning goal, and be cautious about attributing a change in performance or retention to a platform when other factors may have contributed.

Is AI replacing L&D teams?

The evidence here supports a change in work mix, not a conclusion that AI is replacing L&D professionals. Gartner’s 2024 market-guide abstract describes AI as a way to streamline some manual tasks and support learning activities; it is not a study of job losses or team sizes.

LearnUpon’s September 2025 report announcement said that 43% of 600 surveyed L&D leaders and practitioners believed AI could entirely replace their roles, while another 40% anticipated some changes. Respondents were in the U.S., U.K., Australia, and New Zealand. Those figures describe respondents’ expectations, not actual replacement or a forecast that it will happen.

The same release reported that respondents saw data analytics and reporting, AI and machine learning in L&D, change management and leadership, and learning-technology expertise as important skills for the year ahead. Taken together, the findings suggest that practitioners are considering how their work may change, while the cited evidence does not establish that AI can take over L&D’s responsibility for strategy, role context, trust, and evaluation.

How to assess an AI-enabled learning platform

Evaluate a platform against the work your organization needs to support, rather than treating an AI label as evidence of effectiveness. The following criteria reflect capabilities and implementation considerations described by Gartner and the UK Government report:

What the reported L&D figures do—and do not—show

LinkedIn Learning’s 2024 report surveyed 1,636 L&D and HR professionals with L&D responsibilities and some budget influence, alongside 1,063 learners. Its geographies included North America, Brazil, selected Asia-Pacific markets, and selected European countries; the report’s methods section lists the countries. The figures describe those respondents and should not be treated as universal estimates.

In that survey, 58% of learning professionals said L&D had a seat at the table in 2024, compared with 53% in 2022. LinkedIn also reported that 54% more L&D professionals listed analytical skills on LinkedIn profiles than the prior year. That is a relative increase in profile listings, not the percentage of all L&D workers with analytics skills.

LearnUpon’s 2025 figures likewise come from a commercial learning business’s survey release, not a controlled evaluation of AI platforms. The UK report’s evidence base includes 23 workshops, 10 case studies, and a survey with 536 responses; its report page presents these as evidence informing a program of connected outputs, not as a nationally representative survey.

Overall, these sources describe market capabilities, professional priorities, and reported perceptions or practices. They do not establish that AI adoption causes improved business performance, better learning outcomes, or fewer L&D jobs.
