AI is changing mobile apps at two points: developers use it to help build software, and apps use models to understand or generate content for people. That can mean faster development workflows, clearer image descriptions, shorter voice-note summaries, or help refining text—not just a chatbot. The result depends on choosing the right task and model, deciding what runs on the device or in the cloud, and designing for errors, privacy, accessibility, and user control.

How AI is changing mobile app development

AI is becoming a development assistant

AI tools can help developers generate code, locate relevant resources, and troubleshoot errors. Android’s developer guidance describes Gemini in Android Studio and other agentic tools as part of the development workflow. These tools can support routine work, but the available evidence does not establish a general percentage improvement in developer productivity. Suggestions still need review, testing, and integration into the app’s existing architecture.

Models are also becoming app capabilities

Instead of building every model from scratch, teams can use platform APIs and model options to add features such as text generation, image understanding, or speech processing. Apple’s Foundation Models framework provides access to an on-device foundation model through a native Swift API. Android’s options include Gemini Nano and ML Kit GenAI APIs for on-device use, as well as cloud and hybrid paths through Firebase AI Logic. Their availability and capabilities vary, so developers should check current platform documentation before committing to a feature or supported-device range.

What AI changes in the app experience

Useful AI often handles a focused task

Many practical mobile features are narrower than an open-ended chatbot. Apple’s 2025 Foundation Models framework description identifies tasks such as summarization, entity extraction, text understanding, refinement, short dialog, and creative text. It also says the model is not intended as a general-world-knowledge chatbot. Android’s examples include summarizing voice recordings, speech capabilities, and describing images for accessibility.

These features can reduce effort when they fit a clear user goal: condensing a long update, polishing a draft, or turning an image into a description. App actions and notification summaries can also help people reach relevant information with fewer steps. Generated results should not be presented as guaranteed correct; users need a way to review them before relying on them or taking consequential action.

Accessibility is a concrete use case

Android’s documentation describes TalkBack using Gemini Nano with multimodality to provide image descriptions, including when a device is offline or on an unstable connection. That illustrates how on-device AI may make app content easier to access in specific conditions. It is a platform example, not a guarantee that every image will be described accurately; the experience should still offer suitable fallback and avoid implying certainty where an image is ambiguous.

On-device, cloud, and hybrid AI: what changes for a mobile app

The choice is not simply a contest over which model is best. Teams need to match the approach to the task, supported devices, network conditions, data flow, and operating cost. Platform documentation describes tradeoffs but does not establish a universal winner.

Approach Potential strengths Tradeoffs to assess
On-device Can work without a network, respond locally, and keep some processing on the phone. Apple describes its on-device model as optimized for low-latency inference and minimal resource use; Android documents offline examples including image descriptions and audio summaries. Performance and availability depend on the device, model, and task. Teams need to test resource use and supported-device coverage rather than assume every phone can run the feature.
Cloud Can provide access to models and capabilities hosted remotely. Requires a suitable connection and a clear account of what data is sent off-device. Actual latency, privacy, availability, and cost depend on the service and implementation.
Hybrid Can combine local processing with cloud services where a feature needs different capabilities. Requires explicit decisions about which steps run where, what happens when a connection is unavailable, and how data moves between the device and service.

For each proposed feature, map its inputs and outputs before selecting an implementation. Identify whether text, images, audio, or other user data leaves the device; what the app can do offline; and what it should show if a model or connection is unavailable. Those details determine whether a feature feels dependable, not the label “AI.”

How to design and evaluate AI features responsibly

Make the feature understandable and controllable

Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines for generative AI, published June 9, 2025, advise making AI use clear and preparing for models and limitations to change. In practice, explain what the feature does at the point where a person uses it, give people a chance to inspect or edit generated content, and avoid making a model’s uncertain output look like a verified fact.

Test the real task, not just a promising prompt

Google Play guidance says developers are responsible for the experience in their apps: they should understand the underlying models, test reliability and safety, align outputs with policy, respect user safety and privacy, and monitor feedback. Apple’s materials discuss feature-specific evaluation and mitigation for risks including hallucinations and prompt injection. Testing should therefore use the actual app context and likely inputs, including ambiguous or adversarial cases, rather than rely on a few successful demonstrations.

What the available evidence says about impact

Platform examples show what specific implementations can do, but they do not prove that AI improves every app or every user experience. Google’s Android developer overview reports that Kakao Mobility used on-device Gemini Nano to streamline address entry and reduced order completion time by 24%. That is a result attributed to Google’s case study for that implementation; the overview does not state the year, and the figure should not be generalized to other apps.

A September 2024 report titled “AI in Mobile” says six out of ten smartphone owners had used AI features in a mobile app at least once. It also reports that 56% thought adding AI features to smartphone apps would improve the experience, compared with 16% who thought it would worsen it. The available excerpt does not establish the publisher or survey methodology, so those figures describe that report rather than a universal estimate of mobile users’ behavior or opinions.

Thames & Kosmos Robotics: Smart Machines | Robotics Coding Set
  • This kit gives kids a simple, fun, and customizable introduction to robotics that lets them build eight motorized machines.
  • Using the app interface, you can program the robots you build to behave based on the feedback coming from the ultrasound sensor.
  • A full-color, 64-page step-by-step illustrated manual helps kids assemble all of the models and teaches them about robotics in the real world.
  • The ultrasonic sensor works on the same principle as Sonar.
  • Requires a tablet or smartphone running iOS or Android (not included).

These examples and survey results do not establish a general productivity gain for developers or a net improvement in user satisfaction across mobile apps. The sounder conclusion is narrower: AI can make particular tasks easier when capability, context, and safeguards are well matched, and each product needs to demonstrate that value in its own use case.
