IP-based media standards can make production equipment and workflows more interoperable, but they do not by themselves make AI tools vendor-independent. SMPTE ST 2110 provides a foundation for moving synchronized media streams across managed networks; NMOS and AMWA specifications address discovery, control, and workflow exchange. AI portability—such as moving prompts, context, data, outputs, or model behavior between providers—remains a separate question that must be answered for each system.

What interoperability means in IP-based media production

Interoperability is not one switch that turns a facility into a plug-and-play system. It spans several layers: moving media, finding and connecting devices, exchanging workflow information, and operating the facility. AI adds another layer: whether AI services, data, and governance practices can work across systems without unacceptable loss or rework.

Layer What it addresses What it does not establish by itself
Media transport Sending and receiving professional audio, video, and data streams using applicable ST 2110 standards and timing. Device discovery, workflow metadata exchange, facility operations, or AI-provider portability.
Network control and discovery Identifying available senders and receivers and managing connections through NMOS functions. Consistent exchange of every production asset or application-specific workflow.
Workflow data exchange Application, data-model, and interface specifications for activities such as mastering, delivery, archive, contribution, and metadata management. Guaranteed compatibility between every application or AI service.
Facility operations The requirements and management approaches needed to bring equipment online and operate a large IP facility. A universal configuration in which standards alone eliminate integration and operational work.
AI governance and portability AI-related risks, security, and management considerations covered by industry guidance. The ability to switch AI providers while preserving behavior, prompts, context, data, or outputs.

How ST 2110 creates a flexible media transport foundation

SMPTE describes ST 2110 as a suite for the carriage, synchronization, and description of separate elementary essence streams in real-time production, playout, and related professional applications. Instead of treating a finished audio-video-data signal as one indivisible feed, the system can carry audio, video, and data as separate streams.

Each stream is individually timed and can take a different route through the network to one or more receivers. Precision Time Protocol (PTP)-based clocks support synchronization, so separately routed streams can remain aligned. This separation gives production systems more flexibility in how they route and combine media.

This NVR supports up to 8 cameras recording simultaneously to the built-in 2TB HDD. For more space, an extra 8TB HDD can be added via the eSATA port.

The scope matters: ST 2110 is a transport foundation. Equipment still needs to support the relevant parts of the standard and timing model, and the facility needs mechanisms for discovering devices, making connections, exchanging workflow information, and managing operations.

How NMOS and AMWA address coordination beyond transport

NMOS: discovery, registration, connection, and management

SMPTE describes AMWA’s Networked Media Open Specifications (NMOS) as providing functions for discovery, registration, connection, and management in ST 2110 networks. These functions help systems identify available senders and receivers and coordinate connections. They complement media transport rather than replacing it.

AMWA specifications: application and workflow exchange

AMWA’s specification portfolio includes application, data-model, and interface specifications for workflows including mastering, delivery, archive, contribution, and metadata management. These categories address exchanges that transport standards do not define on their own. Actual compatibility depends on the specifications and implementations used by the applications involved.

Why ST 2110 does not make a facility plug-and-play

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) says ST 2110 was necessary but insufficient for building and managing a large-scale IP facility. Transport standards can define how media moves without resolving every facility-level question about bringing equipment online and operating it together.

EBU TECH 3371, Guidelines for the use of the SMPTE ST 2110 standards, addresses facility requirements and management approaches. Its version 3 was updated in April 2023. The practical lesson is that a facility needs both compatible transport and a plan for system configuration and management; adopting ST 2110 alone is not evidence that all equipment and workflows will interoperate automatically.

What SMPTE’s AI guidance establishes—and what it does not

SMPTE Engineering Report ER 1011:2025 is a comprehensive revision of ER 1010:2023. SMPTE says the updated report covers open-source, multimodal, and agentic AI, as well as model risks, risk management, and security. SMPTE Standards Director Thomas Bause Mason said the revision reflects developments including the Model Context Protocol (MCP), enhanced security considerations, open-source AI, and frameworks such as ISO/IEC 42001.

VideoPad Video Editor - Create Professional Videos with Transitions and Effects [Download]
  • Apply effects and transitions, adjust video speed and more
  • One of the fastest video stream processors on the market
  • Drag and drop video clips for easy video editing
  • Capture video from a DV camcorder, VHS, webcam, or import most video file formats
  • Create videos for DVD, HD, YouTube and more

The report is a survey and background resource, not evidence of a universal AI interoperability standard. The fact that MCP, ISO/IEC 42001, or ST 2110 is relevant to a production environment does not, on its own, show that an organization can replace one AI provider with another and preserve model behavior or freely transfer prompts, context, training data, and outputs. Those portability and governance properties depend on the specific systems and their interfaces, data handling, and terms of operation.

What the Dynamic Media Facility initiative is working on

AMWA and EBU announced the Joint Task Force on Dynamic Media Facilities (JT-DMF) on September 13, 2025, as work to facilitate a transition to software-based media production. Its initial focus includes timing models for the Media Exchange Layer (MXL) SDK, a business-level advisory council, and orchestration challenges.

JT-DMF is an initiative under development, not a completed interoperability guarantee. Its focus on timing and orchestration illustrates that flexible, software-based production still depends on coordination across components and operational layers.

How to assess whether an AI-enabled production workflow is portable

Evaluate portability separately from media transport and network control. For the specific system under consideration, document the following before relying on an “independent” or “interoperable” claim:

  • Media and control: Which ST 2110 elements, timing arrangements, and NMOS functions are supported by each relevant component?
  • Workflow interfaces: Which AMWA or other application, data-model, and interface specifications are implemented for the required production tasks?
  • Data and metadata: Which prompts, context, metadata, inputs, and outputs can be exported and imported, and in what formats?
  • Behavior on replacement: Does changing an AI service preserve the behavior the workflow depends on, or would configuration, evaluation, or human review need to be repeated?
  • Security and governance: How are access, data handling, model risks, and operational responsibilities managed across providers?
  • Timing and orchestration: How are components coordinated in the live or software-based workflow, and what happens when a component is replaced or unavailable?
  • Replacement effort: What engineering and operational work would be required to replace one component, including any loss of functionality or need to adapt workflows?

These are evaluation questions, not a claim that the cited standards or reports answer them for a particular product. A meaningful independence assessment needs implementation-specific evidence, especially for AI data portability, behavior, and security.
