Situational Awareness, the AI-focused hedge fund led by Leopold Aschenbrenner, sold most of its public stock portfolio to Citadel in late July 2026 after heavy losses in technology holdings. Reporting points to financing pressure as important context, but does not establish that lenders issued a formal margin call before the sale or disclose the transaction’s price and terms.
What happened to the fund’s portfolio?
Reuters reported that the fund transferred the bulk of its public-equity portfolio to Citadel. “Bulk” matters: Bloomberg reported that not all public stocks had been disposed of and that private-company investments, including Anthropic, remained at the time of its report. The public-stock sale should not be described as a complete liquidation of every investment.
The available reporting describes heavy losses in technology holdings but does not provide a complete portfolio-level account of what drove the decline. It therefore does not establish that the fund’s AI thesis alone caused the losses.

How can lender pressure lead to a stock sale?
Leverage can amplify a market decline’s effect on a fund’s available cash and collateral. If assets pledged to support borrowing lose value, a lender may require additional collateral or repayment under the financing agreement. A manager facing a funding deadline may then sell assets to reduce borrowing or meet a collateral need. This is general financial context, not a confirmed account of the fund’s specific loan terms or lender demands.
A block sale to one buyer can reduce exposure and raise liquidity in a single transaction. Selling gradually in the market may spread execution over time, but leaves the seller exposed to further price moves and may not produce cash quickly enough for an urgent funding need. Raising fresh investor capital could add liquidity without an immediate full portfolio sale, but the reporting does not establish that a raise was available to Situational Awareness on the required timetable. The reports do not establish which alternatives the fund or its lenders formally considered, or the sale’s price and financing terms.

What is known—and not known—about the lender pressure?
Reuters said it was unclear whether lenders had issued margin calls before the fund agreed to sell. The sale followed steep losses and occurred amid questions about financing, but that sequence does not prove that a formal call triggered the transaction. Nor does the available reporting establish a particular forced-sale discount or wrongdoing by a lender.

What did the SEC inquiry establish?
Reuters reported on August 24, 2026, that the SEC had sent subpoenas to banks working with Situational Awareness, seeking information about the fund’s trades, use of leverage and communications with lenders. A subpoena seeking information is not a finding of misconduct. Reuters noted that the inquiry did not necessarily mean enforcement action would follow or that the banks themselves were investigation targets.
Why doesn’t the fund’s 13F show exactly what was sold?
The fund’s March 31, 2026, 13F filing is a snapshot of reportable holdings on that date, not a sale-date inventory. The Block reported positions in AI data infrastructure and bitcoin-mining-linked businesses including IREN, Core Scientific, Riot Platforms, CleanSpark, Bitdeer, HIVE Digital and CoreWeave. It also said the number of shares held immediately before the July transaction was unclear. A 13F does not provide a complete account of leverage or short exposure, either.

What happened to the portfolio after Citadel acquired it?
Reuters reported on August 21, 2026, citing a letter from Citadel founder Ken Griffin to investors, that Citadel had reduced more than 80% of the aggregate risk from the original portfolio it acquired. That figure concerns Citadel’s subsequent management of the acquired positions; it does not disclose Situational Awareness’s sale price or establish the terms of its transaction.
