AI glasses can split a single interaction across the glasses, a paired phone, and cloud services. In Meta’s documented visual-question flow, the wearer speaks a prompt, the glasses capture an image, speech recognition turns the prompt into text, and the text and image are sent to an AI model. That is one product example—not a universal design. Whether information stays on the glasses or leaves them depends on the device, feature, software, region, and settings.
What happens when you ask AI glasses a visual question?
A visual question can join two kinds of input: what the wearer says and what the camera sees. Meta’s description of its multimodal AI flow lays out the sequence: the wearer invokes the assistant and asks a question; speech recognition converts the spoken words into text; the glasses capture a photo; and the text prompt and image are passed to the AI model. Meta says the response can appear in the companion app and play through the glasses’ speakers.
Ray-Ban’s FAQ describes a related Ray-Ban Meta use case: ask Meta AI to describe a scene, translate visible text, or identify a plant. In that flow, the photo is sent to Meta’s cloud for processing and an audio answer is delivered through the glasses. The wearer can review the request, image, and response in Meta AI. These are vendor-documented flows for Meta products; they do not establish how every pair of AI glasses handles voice or images.
The inputs are connected for that request
When a spoken question is paired with a camera image, the model receives both the wearer’s request and visual context. For example, “What does this sign say?” supplies an instruction in text form and an image that may contain the sign. The AI can then produce a response based on those combined inputs. The precise recognition, model, and processing steps can differ by product; the documented example establishes the broad flow, not the implementation details of every device.

Invocation is not proof of continuous audio upload
Meta’s described flow begins with a spoken invocation such as “Hey Meta,” followed by a question. It documents recognition of the invoked request, not a general policy that all surrounding conversation is continuously uploaded. Do not infer either continuous uploading or its absence for another model or feature from this example. Check that device’s current documentation and settings for its microphone behavior.
Gallery capture and AI analysis are different data paths
A saved photo and a photo submitted to answer an AI question may begin with the same camera, but they are not necessarily handled the same way. Meta says ordinary gallery photos and videos are stored privately on the glasses until the wearer imports them to a phone or chooses to share them. Ray-Ban’s FAQ, however, says that when the wearer asks Meta AI about what they are looking at, a photo is sent to Meta’s cloud.
That distinction makes the blanket statement “camera data stays on the device” inaccurate for this example. Gallery capture describes saving media for the wearer; visual AI describes sending an image for analysis. Asking a question about a view is not just another name for saving a photo to the gallery.
What the Meta and Ray-Ban documents say about AI-processed photos
Ray-Ban’s FAQ says photos processed with AI are stored and used to improve Meta products and train Meta AI with help from trained reviewers. This is the provider’s stated practice, not an independent assessment or a guarantee that every device, location, or future software version uses identical terms. Before using visual AI, review the privacy controls and policy that apply to your account and region; settings and terms can change.

Meta’s system card also says users can manage privacy settings and delete gallery media, and that deleting gallery media deletes it from Meta’s cloud. Treat that as the documented behavior for the described Meta feature, rather than assuming that a gallery deletion control erases every copy or category of information generated by every AI feature. Read the current in-app explanation for what the specific delete action covers.
What “on-device” and “cloud processing” mean
“On-device” means a task is processed on the glasses themselves, or on another specifically identified local device such as a paired phone. “Cloud processing” means data is sent to a provider’s remote computing infrastructure for the task. A system can use more than one location: for example, the glasses may capture an image while a remote model processes it and the glasses play the answer. Capturing or storing something locally does not prove that all later processing is local.
Confidential cloud computation is still cloud computation
In a September 23, 2026 engineering post, Meta describes Private Processing as a confidential-computing approach that runs AI workloads in confidential virtual machines. Meta says this extends a trust boundary into its data centers and keeps off-device data inaccessible to Meta during processing. The key distinction is that this is a protection Meta says applies while a workload runs off-device. It is not evidence that the AI model ran on the glasses or that the image never left them.
These assurances should be attributed to Meta: the engineering post describes the company’s design and claims, not an independent audit conclusion. A useful privacy question is therefore not just “Is the data protected?” but also “Where is it processed, what protections apply there, and what is retained afterward?”

Local storage, local inference, and remote processing are separate claims
- Local capture: the camera records an image on the glasses.
- Local storage: a saved gallery file remains on the glasses until import or sharing, as Meta describes for ordinary gallery media.
- Local inference: the AI model performs the requested analysis on the glasses or another specified local device. The cited Meta visual-question flow does not establish this.
- Cloud processing: a photo used for a Meta visual AI question is sent to Meta’s cloud, according to Ray-Ban’s FAQ.
- Confidential cloud processing: a cloud workload runs with additional protections claimed by its provider. It remains remote processing.
Raw images and derived data are not interchangeable
Privacy statements can refer to different information: a raw camera image, a saved gallery file, a prompt or response, or measurements computed from sensor input. One statement about one category does not automatically apply to the others.
Google’s Android XR help documentation offers a distinct example, scoped to perception tracking on Android XR headsets. It says images of eyes, hands, and faces used for tracking are processed in real time and deleted, and are never stored on the device or sent to Google. It separately says eye and face measurements are stored on-device until deleted by a factory reset. The stated handling of transient tracking images therefore differs from the handling of derived measurements.
This Android XR documentation is not a policy for AI glasses generally, nor does it describe Meta’s visual-question feature. Its value is in showing why a privacy explanation should identify both the data type and the feature. “Images are deleted” and “measurements are stored” can both be true when they refer to different stages and outputs.
What the capture light and user controls tell you
Meta says its glasses have a white capture LED that blinks when content is captured for the gallery, and that the light has no off switch. Meta also says that on second-generation glasses, blocking the LED disables the camera until the light is unblocked. This is Meta’s stated safeguard for gallery capture; it should not be generalized to every manufacturer, every sensor, or every route by which data can be transmitted.

Meta’s system card says users can turn voice controls off to decide whether to use Meta AI, manage privacy settings, and delete gallery media. Controls and their consequences may vary by product version and feature. A capture indicator is a cue about capture, not a complete inventory of what an AI service retains or does with a submitted image.
A practical check before using a feature
- Identify the exact device and feature. A gallery photo, a visual AI question, and a tracking function may have separate data flows.
- Check whether the feature is invoked or described as continuous. Look for the manufacturer’s explanation of when microphones or cameras activate; do not infer a general always-on policy from a single assistant flow.
- Find where processing occurs. Distinguish work on the glasses, work on a paired phone, and work in the cloud. A security measure for cloud processing does not make it local.
- Read the retention and use terms for the relevant input. Check what happens to gallery files versus images submitted to AI, including any stated product-improvement, model-training, or reviewer practices.
- Review the actual controls in the companion app. Confirm how to disable voice features, delete media, or adjust privacy settings, and what each control says it affects.
- Check the date, software version, and region. A prototype demonstration, a help page for a headset feature, and a shipping product’s FAQ are not interchangeable evidence.
How to compare privacy descriptions between devices
There is no single data-flow diagram that describes all AI glasses. When comparing two products, use the same questions for each and record the answer only where the manufacturer states it. This avoids treating a cloud safeguard on one device as equivalent to on-device inference on another.
| Comparison question | What to establish |
|---|---|
| When does voice input start? | Is voice input described as invocation-based, or does the provider describe another activation model? The Meta example documents an invoked request, not a universal microphone policy. |
| Where does camera analysis happen? | Does the feature process on the glasses, a paired phone, or a cloud service? Identify the specific feature, not merely the product’s general camera capability. |
| Are gallery files separate from AI submissions? | Check whether saved photos stay local while images submitted to an assistant are sent elsewhere. Meta and Ray-Ban document different handling for these two paths. |
| What is retained or used afterward? | Look for explicit statements about storage, product improvement, model training, human review, and deletion. Do not assume an answer where the source is silent. |
| What can the wearer see or control? | Check capture indicators, voice controls, privacy settings, and the scope of deletion controls for the model and feature. |
| What kind of data does a privacy statement cover? | Separate raw images and saved media from prompts, responses, and derived measurements. |
| What product and date does the source describe? | Record model, software version, region, publication date, and whether the source concerns a prototype or a shipping feature. |
The available official examples here do not support a complete market-wide comparison. They establish particular flows and controls for Meta products and a separate Android XR headset tracking feature; other devices need to be checked against their own documentation.

Google’s May 23, 2025 Android XR post described glasses paired with Gemini as a prototype with a camera, microphones, speakers, and an optional in-lens display. Google said it had begun gathering feedback from trusted testers. That dated demonstration establishes what Google showed at that point; it does not establish current retail availability or a complete data-handling policy for a shipping product.

Questions worth asking before enabling visual AI
Before sending a view to an assistant, it is reasonable to ask: “Are my smart glasses always recording?”, “Do AI glasses send photos to the cloud?”, and “Are AI glasses photos stored on the device?” The accurate answers depend on the product and operation. In Meta’s documented example, the invoked visual question sends a photo to the cloud; ordinary gallery media has a separately described local-storage path. Neither statement should be broadened to every model or feature.
For further context, Meta Engineering attributes a July 2025 statement in “Personal Superintelligence” to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg: “Personal devices like glasses that understand our context — because they can see what we see, hear what we hear, and interact with us throughout the day — will become our primary computing devices.” That is a company leader’s prediction about future devices, not a measured finding about current products, data retention, or privacy.
