AI agents can carry selected preferences and context from one interaction to the next, so you do not have to repeat every useful detail. That memory is not a perfect transcript: what gets retained, where it comes from, how long it lasts, and how you control it depend on the product.
What does memory mean in an AI agent?
Memory is information an assistant or agent can use in a later interaction, such as a preference, a constraint, or a summary of an earlier conversation. It can reduce repeated setup: for example, an assistant that knows you are vegetarian may take that into account when suggesting recipes.
Memory is selective rather than a complete recording of everything you have said. OpenAI says ChatGPT does not retain every detail and that which information is relevant can change. Microsoft describes its Copilot Studio preview as capturing, storing, and applying user preferences and context in later conversations. These are product-specific approaches, not a single standard for AI memory.
How current products handle persistent memory
| Product or service | What memory can use or retain | Scope and controls | Retention and availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | When enabled, relevant context may come from past chats, saved memories, custom instructions, Library files, and connected apps where available. It does not retain every detail. | Users can review, correct, or delete memories and use Temporary Chat to avoid creating or using personalization memory. Deleting a saved memory may also require removing the chat where it originated and other copies. | Settings and availability can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. See OpenAI’s current Memory in ChatGPT guidance. |
| Microsoft Copilot Studio | The preview documentation describes capturing, storing, and applying preferences and context in subsequent conversations. | Each user has a separate memory folder; makers can turn the feature on or off. | The preview documentation says memories are deleted after 28 days without interaction. Microsoft labels this feature preview, so its behavior may change. See Microsoft’s Copilot Studio memory documentation. |
| Cloudflare Agent Memory | Persistent memory for user, organization, and domain-specific context. | Memory is scoped to those contexts; the cited overview does not establish end-user review, correction, or deletion controls. | Cloudflare describes the service as being in private beta. See its Agent Memory documentation, updated June 2, 2026. |
| Amazon Bedrock Agents | Session summaries can be stored and reused in a later session. | Summaries are associated with a memory ID; the later session must invoke the same ID to load prior summaries. | The cited documentation describes the mechanism but does not state a general retention period. See AWS’s Bedrock Agents memory guide. |
| Salesforce Agent Memory | Salesforce describes identifying relevant user details from conversations and using them in future conversations. | The cited overview does not establish the same review, correction, and deletion controls described for ChatGPT. | Edition and add-on licensing conditions apply; check Salesforce’s Agent Memory documentation for current requirements. |
The comparison reflects the cited documentation, not a guarantee that every feature is available in every account or deployment. In particular, preview, private-beta, regional, workspace, and licensing conditions can change.

What memory can—and cannot—do for you
It can reduce repeated instructions
A remembered dietary preference, preferred level of detail, or recurring project context can help an assistant tailor a later response. OpenAI’s help material gives natural-language examples such as “What do you remember about me?” and “Remember that I am vegetarian when you recommend a recipe.” These are examples of how to ask, not evidence that every system accepts the same commands.
It may be incomplete or out of date
A system that selects information can miss a detail, retain a mistaken one, or keep a preference after it has changed. Treat remembered context as a convenience to verify, not as an authoritative profile or a flawless record. OpenAI’s June 4, 2026 announcement discusses work on “freshness, continuity and relevance” in ChatGPT memory; it does not establish a general accuracy rate for AI memory. Read the announcement.

How to use memory without losing control
- Check what the product remembers. Use the account’s memory controls to inspect stored items where available. In ChatGPT, OpenAI documents ways to review memories and ask, “What do you remember about me?”
- Correct stale or wrong information. Update or remove an item rather than assuming the assistant will infer that your circumstances changed.
- Use a non-personalized session when appropriate. ChatGPT’s Temporary Chat can avoid creating or using personalization memory. Other products may offer different controls; check their own documentation.
- Understand what deletion covers. Removing a saved memory does not necessarily delete the original conversation or every copy of the information. OpenAI says the originating chat and other sources may also need to be removed.
- Verify scope and retention before rollout. For an organization or agent deployment, establish whether memory is per user, agent, or tenant; what sources it uses; who can inspect or change it; how deletion works; and whether a retention period or availability restriction applies.
What to check before choosing an agent with memory
- Sources: Does it draw only on saved memories, or also on prior chats, files, instructions, connected apps, or session summaries?
- Scope: Is information isolated per user, shared with an organization, or attached to an agent or session identifier?
- User controls: Can people inspect, correct, disable, and delete what is stored?
- Retention: Is there a stated expiry, and does deletion remove only the memory entry or also its source?
- Availability: Is the feature generally available, in preview or private beta, or dependent on plan, region, workspace, edition, or an add-on?
