An AHL loan assigns a player to an American Hockey League club, usually the NHL team’s affiliate, so he can be rostered and play there. It is not a trade and does not, by itself, mean the NHL club has given up its rights. Whether the player must clear waivers first depends on his status under the applicable NHL/NHLPA agreement. A further change is scheduled for 2026–27: according to the Buffalo Sabres’ summary of the ratified agreement, an assigned player must appear in a minor-league game before the NHL club recalls him.
What “loaned to the AHL” means
The NHL collective bargaining agreement describes a loan as an NHL club transferring a player’s services to a club in another league when the NHL club has a proprietary interest in him, subject to the agreement’s waiver and loan rules. In routine NHL transaction reports, the destination is often the team’s AHL affiliate. The assignment changes where the player is rostered and available to play; it does not itself constitute a trade or establish that the NHL club has surrendered its rights. See the NHL/NHLPA agreement, Article 13.
Official notices can mention waivers and loans together without making them the same transaction. For example, Ottawa’s September 2026 roster announcement separately listed players loaned to Belleville and players placed on waivers for the purpose of being loaned there. A loan notice alone does not tell you whether waivers were required or cleared. Ottawa’s announcement shows that distinction.
Does a player need waivers to be sent down?
Sometimes. A player’s waiver status depends on the applicable agreement’s exemption rules, which consider factors including age when the player signed his first NHL contract and NHL games played. The exemption thresholds differ for skaters and goalies, and NHL playoff games count in the totals specified by the agreement. For a player subject to waivers, Article 13 sets conditions for a loan to another league, including having requested and cleared regular waivers during the playing-season waiver period.

Clearing waivers does not permanently exempt a player from them. In the circumstances covered by Article 13, the agreement limits a club’s right to loan the player after clearance by cumulative NHL games played and days on an NHL roster. The Carolina Hurricanes’ transaction primer summarizes the familiar limit as 10 NHL games or 30 cumulative roster days since waivers last cleared and notes an emergency-recall exception. Those figures are a shorthand, not a complete substitute for the player’s actual status and the controlling agreement. Carolina’s transaction primer and Article 13 explain the rules.
How to assess an individual player
- Check the player’s age and the date he signed his first NHL contract against the applicable exemption category.
- Check his NHL games played against the relevant skater or goalie threshold; include playoff games where the agreement says they count.
- Find out whether he has cleared waivers, and when that happened.
- If he cleared, count the NHL games and roster days accumulated since then under the applicable rule.
- Check whether the transaction involves an emergency or other recall category that affects the ordinary rule.
- Read the official transaction notice carefully: being placed on waivers, clearing waivers, and being loaned are distinct statuses.
If another club claims a player placed on waivers, he may be transferred to the claiming club. If no club claims him, the assigning team may loan him, subject to the agreement’s rules. A player’s age alone is not enough to determine whether he can be sent down without waivers.
What changes in 2026–27
The NHL and NHLPA ratified a four-year agreement in July 2025 that runs through the 2029–30 season. The NHL’s CBA page lists the agreement and the July 2025 memorandum; the league’s ratification announcement gives the term.

According to the Buffalo Sabres’ summary, starting in the 2026–27 season a player assigned to the AHL must appear in a minor-league game before the NHL club recalls him. The change addresses a described paper-transaction practice: a player could be technically loaned to create roster space while remaining with or traveling with the NHL team, then recalled without playing an AHL game. Under the reported change, that immediate recall without an AHL appearance is no longer the ordinary option. The summary is not a substitute for the agreement’s exact language or any applicable exceptions; see Buffalo’s CBA explainer and the NHL/NHLPA agreement.

What an AHL loan means for the NHL team
The assignment makes the player available to the AHL club while he remains under the NHL organization’s control, if he is still under contract or otherwise subject to its rights. It can also free a place on the NHL roster. The exact salary and salary-cap consequences cannot be inferred from the word “loan”: they depend on the player’s contract and the applicable roster and cap rules.
From 2026–27, the reported requirement for an AHL appearance also affects how quickly a club can use an assignment to clear a roster place and bring the player straight back. The player must appear in a minor-league game before recall under the Sabres’ summary, subject to the precise agreement wording and applicable exceptions.

Example: Roy and Del Gaizo loaned to Laval
On October 30, 2025, Montreal announced that Joshua Roy and Marc Del Gaizo had been loaned to the Laval Rocket after being recalled on October 21 and traveling with the Canadiens. Roy played in one game on that trip; Del Gaizo practiced with Montreal but did not make his Canadiens debut. The example shows why the word “loan” alone does not establish whether a player appeared in an NHL game or explain the club’s reason for moving him. Montreal’s transaction announcement describes the sequence.
How to compare two AHL loan situations
Similar-looking transactions can have different waiver and recall implications. Compare the following details rather than relying on the headline:
- Season and agreement: distinguish transactions before and after the reported 2026–27 minor-league appearance change.
- Waiver exemption: check the player’s category, including the different skater and goalie thresholds.
- Post-clearance activity: if waivers were cleared, check NHL games and roster days accrued since then.
- Recall type: determine whether an emergency or other recall provision applies.
- AHL appearance: check whether the rule for that season and transaction requires a minor-league game before recall.
- Transaction wording: distinguish placement on waivers, waiver clearance, and the actual loan.
- Contract and cap treatment: assess these separately; a transaction notice does not establish player-specific salary or cap effects.
The AHL and the Professional Hockey Players’ Association announced a tentative agreement on January 7, 2026, subject to ratification by the AHL Board of Governors and AHL membership. That announcement does not establish whether ratification was completed or what final terms were adopted. The AHL’s announcement states the status as reported on that date.
