In Australia, adult websites covered by the Age-Restricted Material Codes must use an appropriate age-assurance method before giving access to age-restricted pornography. A click on “I am 18 or older” by itself is not enough. There is no single government-mandated check: a service can choose from methods such as photo-ID matching, facial age estimation or a credit-card check, subject to accuracy, fairness and privacy safeguards. The codes have applied since 9 March 2026.
Why adult websites ask for an age check
The Age-Restricted Material Codes are mandatory registered codes under Australia’s Online Safety Act framework. They apply to providers of covered online services, including designated internet services such as website services. For the adult websites covered by the rules, the aim is to reduce children’s access to age-restricted material.
For this purpose, eSafety describes pornography as sexual content involving adults who consented to its creation. It may be real, acted, fake, written or AI-generated. Content involving children, extreme violence, non-consensual acts or non-consensual sharing is treated as illegal or unlawful content, not as ordinary adult pornography; separate laws apply. What the age-check process can look like
When a person in Australia tries to access age-restricted pornography, the service should seek appropriate age assurance rather than relying solely on a self-declared age. The website may perform the check itself or use a verification company. The exact steps depend on the service and the method it selects.

eSafety lists several possible approaches. These are examples, not a required checklist that every website must offer:
- Photo-ID matching: provide an identity document so a system can assess whether it belongs to someone old enough.
- Facial age estimation: use an image of a face to estimate age, rather than verify identity against a document.
- Credit-card check: use card-related information as an age-assurance signal.
- Digital identity: use a digital identity system or wallet.
- Parental confirmation: have a parent or guardian confirm age or access.
- AI-based age estimation: estimate age from relevant inputs or signals.
These methods differ in what information they require and whether they estimate age or verify it through identity evidence. eSafety’s guidance requires appropriate age assurance to be technically accurate, robust, reliable and fair; providers should offer more than one method and must not make government-issued ID the only route. The method must also minimise personal information and comply with Australian privacy law, including the Privacy Act. Read the eSafety regulatory guidance for the framework.

Do you have to provide government ID?
Not necessarily. A provider may choose photo-ID matching, but the guidance says government ID should not be the only option. A service should offer more than one way to establish age, though the available alternatives can vary by website. A user may therefore encounter a choice of methods—or a different method on another service.
Does eSafety receive your browsing or identity data?
The codes do not require websites to send eSafety individual users’ data or browsing histories. That does not mean a website or its verification contractor collects no information. The provider remains responsible for meeting relevant privacy obligations, and the specific data handling depends on the service and its chosen method. Do not assume a site deletes an uploaded image or identity details unless its own current privacy information says so.

Will you need to verify your age every time?
There is no universal one-time check or shared government-run verification account established by these rules. Some providers may let an age assurance result persist across sessions or connected services; others may check again by session or service. The experience is provider-specific and can change, so the rules alone do not establish how any named adult website currently handles repeat visits.

Can a VPN bypass the check?
eSafety says providers are expected to take reasonable steps to prevent workarounds and detect VPN use. Its guidance discusses examples such as device telemetry, behavioural signals, persistent identifiers, VPN-detection or IP-intelligence services, and suspicious changes in IP address. These are possible signals in regulatory guidance—not proof that every adult website uses each technique, or a guarantee that every attempt to evade a check will be detected.
What the technology trial does—and does not—show
An Australian Government technology trial assessed more than 60 technologies across 48 providers. The approaches included age verification, age estimation, age inference, successive validation, parental control and parental consent. The official Age Assurance Technology Trial final report, published 31 August 2025 and later updated with a 2026 corrigendum, says there is no one-size-fits-all solution: different technologies may suit different uses. Those findings do not establish that every method performs equally well or reveal which method a particular adult website uses.

eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant described the child-safety objective this way: “Industry must now apply consistent standards across their services so children are not accidentally exposed when they search or scroll online.” The quote comes from eSafety’s 6 March 2026 announcement; it is not a technical description of an individual site’s age check.
