AdventNet’s 2006 guide described a NetFlow Analyzer that monitored bandwidth by receiving NetFlow v5 exports from network devices. The current product, ManageEngine NetFlow Analyzer, uses the same flow-based idea but lists support for several formats, including NetFlow, sFlow, and IPFIX. In both cases, the device exports traffic summaries to a collector for analysis; the product does not need to insert a probe into the traffic path.
How flow-based bandwidth monitoring works
NetFlow Analyzer analyzes flow records exported by routers and switches. A flow record summarizes traffic that passed through a device interface; it is not a copy of every packet. The collector receives and processes those records, then presents views that help administrators examine bandwidth use by application, host, conversation, and time.
- Configure a network device: Set a supported router or switch to export flow records to the NetFlow Analyzer collector. The exact steps depend on the device and its software version.
- Receive and process the exports: The collector must be reachable and configured to accept the device’s chosen flow format.
- Investigate traffic: Once flow data arrives, use the interface to review traffic views, trends, and reports. ManageEngine’s getting-started guide says dashboards populate after flow data is received from a network-device interface.
ManageEngine says its current product requires neither a hardware probe in the traffic path nor endpoint agents. Its getting-started documentation describes a Central-and-Probe architecture for Enterprise Edition, so deployment topology should be checked for the edition and scale being considered.
What the current product says it supports
ManageEngine’s current bandwidth-monitoring page lists these flow formats:
#1 Best Overall
- NetFlow
- sFlow
- IPFIX
- J-Flow
- NetStream
- AppFlow
The same page names Cisco, Juniper, HP, and Extreme among major vendors. A format appearing on the product page does not establish compatibility with every model, operating-system release, or configuration. Check the current supported-device information for the exact equipment before planning a deployment.
What administrators can analyze and report
Vendor documentation describes NetFlow Analyzer as more than a live bandwidth gauge. The user guide documents real-time traffic graphs, historical trends, traffic profiling by top applications, hosts, and conversations, capacity planning, billing, and security analysis. The reports guide describes search and comparison reports, scheduled reports, capacity-planning and billing reports, and raw-data forensics reports.
These are documented product capabilities, not independent measurements of accuracy or performance. For an evaluation, match the reports and retention options you need to the edition, deployment, and data available in your network.

What “AdventNet” means in the title
The AdventNet Quick Reference Guide is marked © 2006. It says that the product at that time supported NetFlow version 5 exports only. That statement describes the 2006 release, not the current compatibility list. The old guide also contains period-specific setup commands, port numbers, and operating-system requirements; do not treat those as current installation instructions. Use current, device-specific configuration guidance instead.
Current evaluation details
ManageEngine’s current bandwidth-monitoring page says its free edition permanently monitors up to two interfaces. It also describes a 30-day trial that unlocks the full feature set across unlimited interfaces and can be installed on Windows and Linux. These are vendor-stated offer details and may change; confirm the terms on the product page before choosing an edition.
Quick Recap
Before setting up a collector
- Confirm the exact device model and software version appear in the current supported-device information.
- Check that the device can export a supported flow format and that the collector can receive it.
- Choose an edition and deployment architecture appropriate to the number of interfaces and the need for Central/Probe components.
- Identify whether the goal is live visibility, historical analysis, capacity planning, billing, or security investigation, then confirm the relevant reports and data retention meet that need.
