Under-mattress sleep trackers can be useful for noticing broad patterns, but their accuracy varies by device, metric, and sleep conditions. They infer sleep from movement, heartbeat, and breathing signals transmitted through the mattress; they do not directly read brain waves. Polysomnography (PSG), the sleep-lab reference used in the studies discussed here, remains a different and more comprehensive measurement.
What under-mattress sleep trackers measure
These devices sit beneath a mattress and detect subtle mechanical signals produced by the body. Sleeptracker-AI describes using piezoelectric sensors and ballistocardiography to detect heartbeat, respiration, and movement. Software then uses those signals to estimate sleep and wake periods and, on some devices, sleep stages. These are indirect signals and algorithmic estimates—not direct measurements of brain activity.
Research on this sensor category has compared measures such as heart rate, respiratory rate, body movement, and calculated sleep measures with PSG. What an app reports depends on the exact product and model. Common outputs may include:
- Estimated bedtime, wake time, sleep and wake periods, and total sleep time.
- Sleep continuity measures such as sleep efficiency, sleep-onset latency, and wake after sleep onset (WASO).
- Estimated light, deep, and REM sleep, sometimes alongside wake labels.
- Movement or restlessness, heart rate, and breathing or respiratory rate; some products may also report heart-rate variability.
- For some models, algorithmic apnea or hypopnea estimates.
Do not assume a particular tracker offers every metric, or that every reported metric has been validated against PSG. Check the exact product version and the evidence for the specific measure you care about. The sensor-category studies include a 2017 validation of a contact-free sleep monitoring device and a 2022 validation of a ballistocardiograph sleep tracker.

How accurate are they in published studies?
There is no single accuracy score for under-mattress sleep trackers. A sleep/wake classification score, average error in total sleep time, and sleep-stage classification score describe different things. Two published evaluations illustrate why the device, metric, sample, and protocol all matter.
| Device and study | Reported result | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeptracker-AI Monitor, 2022 | Four-stage wake/light/deep/REM epoch-by-epoch classification accuracy: 79.0% (95% confidence interval 77.8–80.2%). Average total sleep time overestimate: 6.3 minutes. Average WASO underestimate: 10.2 minutes. | These are results from the study’s one unattended in-lab night with 102 adults, not a universal score for the product category. |
| Withings Sleep Analyser, 2025 | Overall sleep/wake accuracy: 83%; sleep sensitivity: 95%; specificity: 37%. Average total sleep time overestimate: 48 minutes (standard deviation 81 minutes); average WASO underestimate: 54 minutes (standard deviation 78 minutes). | The 183-adult evaluation covered more than 400 nights and included healthy participants and participants with sleep disorders. High sensitivity paired with low specificity means sleep was often identified when PSG recorded sleep, but wake was much less reliably identified in this study. |
The two studies used different protocols and measured different outcomes, so their headline percentages are not a head-to-head ranking. The Withings evaluation also found performance varied by group and sleep opportunity: accuracy and specificity were higher for night than daytime opportunities among healthy participants, while accuracy and sensitivity were higher for healthy participants than for participants with sleep disorders.

- 【No Camera Radar Sensing for Privacy】 SOMNDEEP sleep tracker device uses radar-based sensing instead of a bedroom camera, so it does not record images or video. The private, contactless design helps capture sleep-related movement and routine trends while keeping your bedroom experience discreet, quiet, and comfortable.
- 【Easy App Reports & Clear Sleep Trends】 Sleep reports are automatically uploaded to the app via stable 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and shown in simple, easy-to-read charts. View daily sleep data, compare long-term trends, and understand changes in your sleep quality without complicated setup, making it easy for seniors and users who are not very tech-savvy.
The Sleeptracker-AI authors concluded that their findings indicate the monitor is a valid device for monitoring sleep quantity and quality among adults. That conclusion applies to the tested device and study: the work involved 102 adults over one unattended in-lab night, and several authors were Fullpower Technologies employees; the researchers received de-identified studies and datasets from Fullpower. It is not an independent endorsement of all under-mattress trackers. The study also reported an algorithmic estimate of obstructive sleep apnea at AHI ≥5 with 87.3% accuracy, 85.7% sensitivity, and 88.1% specificity. Those study results do not establish that the tracker can diagnose sleep apnea or replace clinical evaluation. See the 2022 Sleeptracker-AI validation study and the 2025 Withings performance evaluation.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat “accuracy” means for your sleep data
Look for the specific measure behind a claim rather than relying on a single percentage. Sleep/wake sensitivity measures how often PSG-recorded sleep is identified as sleep; specificity measures how often PSG-recorded wake is identified as wake. Duration estimates instead call for bias and variability: a device can have a respectable classification score while still overestimating sleep time or missing wake during the night. Stage classification is another distinct task.

Population and sleep timing matter too. A result from healthy adults sleeping at night may not describe performance for someone with fragmented sleep, a sleep disorder, or a daytime sleep schedule. The Withings evaluation documented differences across these groups and opportunities, making its results especially relevant to interpreting data from shift workers and people with disrupted sleep.
Before comparing a study result with a tracker you might use, check whether the evidence matches the exact model and firmware, sensor placement, mattress construction, and setting. Also note the number of nights, whether measurement was in a lab or at home, and whether the work was independent or manufacturer-supported. The cited studies do not establish current compatibility or performance for every mattress or retail model.

How to use tracker readings responsibly
- Use repeated readings to observe broad patterns—such as changes in estimated sleep timing or continuity—rather than treating one night’s stage chart as definitive.
- Interpret sleep-stage labels and duration estimates as estimates, not clinical measurements.
- Confirm which metrics the exact device reports and whether those particular metrics were validated.
- If data raises concerns about sleep or breathing, use it to prepare questions for a qualified health professional. Do not use an app’s apnea estimate or sleep score as a diagnosis.
How to compare under-mattress trackers
Do not choose a “most accurate” device from unrelated studies alone. Compare evidence on the same terms:
- Metric: Is the claim about sleep/wake, sleep continuity, stages, heart rate, breathing, or an apnea estimate?
- Agreement measure: For sleep/wake, look for sensitivity and specificity; for duration, look for average bias and variability; for stages, look for classification accuracy and, where reported, chance-corrected agreement.
- Study conditions: Check the population, night versus daytime sleep, number of nights, and whether testing was in a lab or at home.
- Evidence quality: Note sample size, the exact device version evaluated, whether the comparison was against PSG, and disclosed manufacturer involvement.
- Practical fit: Verify current mattress and bed compatibility, one- or two-person sensing, installation, app support, and available features for the exact product. The validation studies cited here do not establish those current commercial specifications.
For device-specific sensor descriptions, Sleeptracker-AI publishes its data accuracy and validation information; manufacturer descriptions should be distinguished from independent study results.
