Smart scales usually measure your weight more reliably than they estimate body fat or muscle mass. The composition numbers come from electrical impedance and a device-specific formula—not a direct measurement of fat or muscle—so treat them as rough trends from the same scale, not precise measurements or substitutes for clinical assessment.
What a smart scale measures—and what it estimates
A scale measures your weight directly. Most consumer smart scales estimate body composition using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA): a small electrical signal passes through the body, and the device uses the resulting impedance along with user characteristics in an algorithm.
Many common scales use foot-to-foot electrodes. They measure the signal through the lower body and extrapolate to estimate whole-body composition. Different devices can use different equations, so two scales may give different body-fat or muscle readings for the same person. Those readings are estimates, not direct measurements.

How accurate are the readings?
Weight: close in one direct comparison
A 2021 observational study by Frija-Masson and colleagues compared three commercial scales with DXA in adults evaluated at a tertiary hospital in France. The median absolute weight errors were 0.3 kg for the Body Partner (Téfal), 0 kg for the DietPack (Terraillon), and 0.25 kg for the Body Cardio (Nokia Withings). These results suggest the tested scales weighed participants closely against DXA; they do not establish the performance of every scale or current product generation. Frija-Masson et al., JMIR mHealth and uHealth, 2021.

- UNLIMITED USERS: The GE body composition scale has a large weighing surface measuring 12.2 in * 13.2 in * 1.3 in (310 * 336 * 33.8 mm). It supports unlimited users, and up to 9 profiles can be created; it instantly recognizes the user when they step on the scale, perfect for families and fitness groups who want to monitor their body data to improve their health
Body fat and muscle: larger, device-dependent errors
In that same comparison, the three scales underestimated fat mass by median values of 2.2 kg, 4.4 kg, and 3.7 kg, respectively. Muscle-mass results varied by device, and the study’s abstract and full-text results differ in how they report the errors and their direction. The robust conclusion is that composition estimates had materially larger, device-dependent errors than weight; a single unqualified muscle-error figure would be misleading. The authors concluded that the tested scales should not replace DXA for body-composition assessment in patient care, particularly cautioning about use in severe obesity. Frija-Masson et al., 2021.
Why correlation does not prove an accurate personal reading
A device can track higher readings in people with higher DXA measurements and still be substantially off for an individual. Correlation describes whether values tend to move together; agreement describes how close the readings are. For a personal estimate, bias and the spread of individual errors matter.

An older comparison of four consumer BIA instruments with MRI and DXA in 106 adults found that agreement depended on electrode configuration. For bipolar instruments, 95% limits of agreement extended from −14.54 to +8.58 percentage points for body fat and from −9.52 to +3.92 kg for skeletal muscle. For the tetrapolar device, the corresponding ranges were −6.59 to +4.61 percentage points and −4.62 to +4.74 kg. The authors preferred tetrapolar arrangements for individual or public use, while noting bipolar devices could be useful for field studies reporting group estimates. This 2008 study helps explain why device design matters, but it does not rank current smart scales. Bosy-Westphal et al., Obesity Facts, 2008.
A 2022 study of bioimpedance wearables and an octapolar device in healthy adults provides a further example, but it did not test foot-to-foot smart scales. The tested wearable averaged 30.9% body fat versus 26.9% by DXA, a mean difference of 4.0 percentage points; its mean skeletal-muscle estimate was 29.4 kg versus 27.2 kg by DXA, a difference of 2.2 kg. The study reported high correlations alongside significant mean differences and wide individual limits of agreement. Its authors describe BIA estimates as based on electrical conductance through total body water and proprietary algorithms, and note that individual errors compared with DXA can occur. Barone Gibbs et al., American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2022.

How to use a smart scale’s composition readings
- Use one device for comparisons. Different scales can use different equations, so a reading from one model may not be comparable with another.
- Keep your setup consistent. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use the same scale position and standing position each time. Consistent technique can make readings more comparable; it does not make the estimate an accurate absolute measurement.
- Read trends cautiously. A change in the app is not, by itself, confirmation that your fat or muscle changed by that amount. Do not interpret a small shift as a verified body-composition change.
- Do not assume a universal measurement protocol. The 2022 wearable study used morning, fasted, postvoid testing as its validation protocol. That is not established as a universal requirement for every consumer scale; follow the instructions for your model.
- Keep the purpose in view. A scale can be convenient for self-monitoring, especially for weight. Do not use its composition estimate as the sole basis for a clinical decision.
Can you choose the most accurate smart scale?
The cited evidence does not establish a most accurate current model. The direct smart-scale study was published in 2021, tested three named devices in a French hospital setting, and does not validate present-day generations or every population. The 2008 comparison is older, while the 2022 study tested wearables and an octapolar device rather than foot-to-foot consumer scales. A current product’s accuracy for both body fat and muscle mass would need independent, model-specific validation against a suitable reference; the studies cited here do not provide that ranking.
