A weaker U.S. dollar generally buys less foreign currency. That can make a hotel, meal, or other purchase priced abroad cost more in dollars. For an investor holding an unhedged foreign-currency investment, a weaker dollar can also lift its dollar value if the investment’s currency strengthens against the dollar—but it does not guarantee a gain. The destination’s exchange rate, the asset’s local performance, fees, and timing all matter.

What does a weaker dollar mean for a trip abroad?

If a purchase has a fixed price in a foreign currency, a dollar that buys fewer units of that currency makes the purchase more expensive when converted to dollars. The exchange rate for the destination currency on the transaction date—not a general impression that the dollar is weak—determines the conversion.

For example, suppose a hotel night costs 100 units of a destination’s currency. If one dollar buys 10 units, the room converts to $10 before fees; if one dollar later buys 8 units, the same room converts to $12.50. These are illustrative rates, not current quotes or a forecast. The hotel’s local price could also change, so currency movement alone does not determine the final bill.

Use the rate for the currency you will spend

A broad U.S. dollar index is useful context, but it tracks the dollar against a weighted basket of major U.S. trading partners’ currencies. It does not tell you the precise rate for every destination or transaction. The Federal Reserve’s monthly G.5 exchange-rate release reports monthly observations rather than live quotes. It generally expresses rates as foreign-currency units per U.S. dollar, except where indicated: fewer units per dollar mean the dollar has weakened against that currency; more mean it has strengthened. Check the table headings and any currency-specific convention before interpreting a figure.

The Fed’s July 2026 Monetary Policy Report described its broad dollar index as having risen modestly on net since the start of 2026 through its reporting period, despite volatility. Its data ended July 2, 2026, so that description is historical context, not a live rate or the dollar’s status on every later date.

Card conversion and fees affect the amount charged

For a foreign-currency card purchase, the card network converts the amount to dollars using a rate in effect when it processes the transaction. The conversion rate and any foreign-transaction fee depend on the network and the terms of your account; there is no single fee that applies to every card. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains these conversion and fee provisions in its Regulation Z guidance. Check your current card agreement for the fee and conversion terms, then compare the final dollar amount rather than assuming a displayed exchange rate is the one your card will use.

How can a weaker dollar affect international investments?

For an unhedged holding denominated in a foreign currency, its dollar value depends both on what the holding is worth in that currency and on the exchange rate used to convert it. All else equal, a foreign currency that strengthens against the dollar raises the dollar value of a given foreign-currency amount. If that currency weakens against the dollar, the translated value falls.

That currency effect is only one part of total return. A security can lose value in its home market, offsetting or outweighing a favorable exchange-rate move. Costs, distributions, and applicable taxes also affect results. The SEC’s International Investing page warns that exchange-rate changes can increase or reduce a U.S. investor’s return; even an investment that rises in its home market can be worth less in dollars after currency changes.

Ways U.S. investors may get international exposure

International exposure can come through American Depositary Receipts (ADRs), U.S.-registered mutual funds or exchange-traded funds, U.S.-traded foreign stocks, or direct trading on foreign markets. ADRs represent foreign shares—or a fraction or multiple of shares—and their prices correspond to home-market share prices adjusted for the ADR-to-share ratio. Funds may provide broader diversification than an investor could readily assemble alone, but their holdings, costs, and risks differ.

Do not assume every international fund has the same currency exposure. A fund may hedge some currency risk, or none; the policy is product-specific. Review its current prospectus for holdings, hedging policy, fees, and stated risks before drawing conclusions about how a dollar move could affect it.

Currency is not the only international-investing risk

International investments can also involve higher transaction costs, taxes such as withholding on dividends, differences in disclosure and accounting practices, reduced liquidity, political and legal risks, and possible foreign-currency controls. The SEC outlines these considerations in its international investing guidance. The relevance of each risk depends on the investment and market; currency changes are not necessarily the largest factor in a particular holding’s return.

How to judge what a dollar move means for you

  • If you are planning travel: identify the destination currency, check a rate close to the transaction date, and account for the card or payment method’s conversion and fees. A broad dollar index cannot substitute for the bilateral rate you will actually use.
  • If you are assessing an investment: consider the asset’s local-currency price change alongside the exchange-rate change, then include costs and relevant taxes. For a fund, verify actual holdings and currency-hedging policy in its prospectus.
  • If you are comparing published dollar figures: note the observation period and quotation convention. The Federal Reserve generally gives foreign-currency units per dollar, so a falling number in that format signals dollar depreciation against that currency.

Exchange rates are set in foreign-exchange markets; the U.S. government does not target a particular dollar level. The Federal Reserve’s FAQ on the dollar’s value, updated July 11, 2024, states that neither the Treasury nor the Federal Reserve targets a particular exchange-rate level.
