A USB-C thermal camera can give a recent iPhone a second way of seeing: it adds an infrared sensor that shows heat patterns and estimates surface temperatures, while the iPhone handles the screen, the app, storage, and sharing. The catch is that USB-C only describes the plug. It does not tell you whether the camera’s electronics and app support iOS. Confirm the iOS version of the product before anything else.

Why USB-C alone does not settle compatibility

USB-C is a connector standard. Two thermal cameras can use the same port and still be built for different phones. FLIR sells its FLIR ONE line in several variants, including iOS USB-C, iOS Lightning, and Android USB-C, so the product name is the real identifier. A camera that fits your iPhone’s port but was built for Android will not give you the iOS app experience, and it may not work with your phone at all.

The reverse problem also exists. Older thermal cameras sold for iPhone used Lightning, so a USB-C iPhone cannot connect to them directly without a different accessory. Treat the connector as one of several checks, not the proof of fit.

Checklist before you buy

  • Platform: The product name should say iOS (USB-C). Reject listings that say only “USB-C” or “Android.”
  • Connector and SKU: Match the listing to the exact model variant, such as “FLIR ONE – iOS (USB-C)” or “FLIR ONE Pro – iOS (USB-C).”
  • iPhone model range: FLIR’s compatibility statement for the FLIR ONE Pro iOS (USB-C) names iPhone 15 and newer. Check the product page for the model range of the standard FLIR ONE iOS (USB-C) before you buy, because that statement is documented only for the Pro.
  • Retailer listing: Confirm the product name, SKU, and iOS support on the seller’s page at the time of purchase. Prices and stock change often, so this guide does not list them.

FLIR ONE and FLIR ONE Pro compared

Two iOS USB-C models are the most direct fit for a current iPhone. FLIR’s wireless Edge Pro is covered separately below because it connects in a different way.

When the standard FLIR ONE iOS (USB-C) is enough

The standard model suits casual inspection: checking whether a wall section is warmer than its neighbors, seeing whether a radiator is heating evenly, or spotting a warm electrical component during a quick walk-through. Its listed range stops at 120°C, which covers most household and building checks but not hot industrial surfaces.

When the FLIR ONE Pro iOS (USB-C) justifies the step up

The Pro has four times as many native pixels (160 × 120 against 80 × 60), a listed range that reaches 400°C, and multiple spot measurements. Those features matter when you need to compare several points in one scene or when a fine detail, such as a single hot connection among many, would blur on the lower-resolution sensor. It is the better fit for detailed troubleshooting.

Native resolution is not the same as super resolution

Both models list a larger “super resolution” figure: 240 × 180 for the standard model and 480 × 360 for the Pro. That number describes processed output shown on screen. The sensor itself captures the native 80 × 60 or 160 × 120 pixels. Use the native figure when you compare how much detail the sensor actually records, and treat the super-resolution figure as a display size.

What the camera shows, and what its temperature numbers mean

A thermal camera measures emitted infrared energy and displays it as a color-coded heat map. That map is good at showing where temperatures differ. A warm patch behind a wall can point to a water leak, an unusually hot breaker can point to a loose connection, and a cold band on a duct can point to an air leak. A pattern alone does not establish the cause. Confirm the cause with a direct inspection or a qualified professional before acting on it.

The temperature readings carry conditions. FLIR states a typical accuracy of ±3°C or ±5% for the Pro, and only within the start-up and scene conditions FLIR specifies. Several factors change the number you see:

Thermal Master P1 Thermal Camera for Any USB-C iPhone & Android, 160x120 Ir
  • NOTE: Thermal cameras detect heat from surfaces — not through walls. Temperature differences reveal insulation gaps, moisture issues, and overheating components
  • Works with a Variety of Phones: Designed for the USB-C generation, this thermal imaging camera works with Android phones, USB-C iPhones, Android tablets, and Windows devices. The extended Type-C plug (+2mm) ensures compatibility with nearly all phone cases, so you don’t need to take off your case during inspections. The included 19-inch extension cable allows for inspecting hard-to-reach areas, offering flexibility in various applications
  • 160×120 IR Resolution & Fast Detection: owered by Thermal Master X³ algorithms, this thermal camera for Android and iPhone intelligently enhances native 160×120 to 320×240 IR resolution for sharper thermal detail. With 0.04℃ thermal sensitivity (NETD) and a 25Hz refresh rate, it detects temperature changes instantly, delivering smooth real-time thermal imaging when you're moving
  • Wide Temperature Range & High Accuracy: This infrared thermal camera measures temperatures from -4°F to 1112°F (-20°C to 600°C) with ±2°C / ±3.6℉ accuracy using TruePix Precision Temp Measurement. Adjustable temperature span helps block background heat, making it ideal for home inspections, electrical inspections, HVAC diagnostics, and automotive repairs. The built-in calibration function ensures consistent accuracy during use
  • 15x Zoom & Wide Field of View: Zoom in from 1–15x with simple two-finger gestures for precision inspections, or scan entire rooms with a wide 52°×39° field of view. This thermal scanner easily detects water leaks, moisture in walls, overheating electronics, and small electronic components, and find pets in complete darkness
  • Emissivity: Surfaces emit infrared energy at different efficiencies. Glossy metal and some glass reflect the scene around them, so the reading can be far from the surface’s true temperature.
  • Distance: The sensor sees a wider area as you move farther away, so small targets average with their surroundings.
  • Ambient temperature: A cold room or a sunlit wall changes the reading on the surface you aim at.

Treat the readout as a comparison tool that shows relative temperature differences, not as an exact thermometer. For a reading you need to document or act on, verify it with a contact thermometer.

Wireless alternative: FLIR Edge Pro

FLIR Edge Pro is a wireless option that supports iOS. It can inspect targets while the camera stays away from the phone, which helps when the target is out of reach or when you want to keep the phone separate from the camera. It is a different connection style from the directly attached USB-C FLIR ONE models, so it does not replace them for a simple plug-in setup. Check FLIR’s current documentation for its specifications and supported iOS versions, because the sources available for this guide do not list them.

Older Seek Compact models and connector mismatches

Seek Thermal’s support material for older Seek Compact models describes Lightning requirements for iOS models and USB-C with OTG for Android models. If you find a Seek Compact listing, check its connector against your iPhone. A Lightning model needs a Lightning port, and a USB-C iPhone cannot use it without an additional adapter that the manufacturer has not documented as compatible. Older documentation is not evidence that a random adapter will work with a current USB-C iPhone.

  • Camera is not detected: Confirm the product name is iOS (USB-C) and the cable and adapter are the ones specified for that model.
  • Image appears but no readings: Check that the app has the permissions it needs and that you are using the correct model in the app’s settings.
  • Readings look implausible: Recheck emissivity settings, move closer to the target, and compare against a contact thermometer.

Which model to choose

For a current iPhone, start with the iOS (USB-C) listing that matches the exact model you want. Pick the standard FLIR ONE iOS (USB-C) for casual, low-temperature checks. Pick the FLIR ONE Pro iOS (USB-C) when you need higher native resolution, the 400°C range, or multiple spot measurements. Choose FLIR Edge Pro only if you need wireless inspection and can accept a different setup.
